레바논의 이슬람교도 인구는 정확한 통계를 내기 어렵다. 이는 1932년 이후 공식적인 인구조사가 실시되지 않았기 때문이다.^{[54][55][56][57][58][59]} 따라서 현재 사용되는 인구 관련 수치는 모두 추정치이다.

CIA 월드 팩트북에 따르면, 레바논 영토 내 이슬람교도 인구는 전체의 약 61.1% (2018년 추정)^{[54][55][56][57][58][59]} 또는 59.5%^[60][61]로 추정된다.

1932년에 실시된 마지막 공식 인구 조사에서는 전체 인구 791,700명 중 이슬람교도가 48% (388,400명)를 차지했으며, 세부적으로는 시아파 19%, 수니파 22%, 드루즈교 7%로 구성되었다.^[64] 이후 미국 중앙정보국(CIA)이 1985년에 실시한 연구에서는 전체 인구 2,228,000명 중 이슬람교도가 75% (1,667,000명)까지 증가한 것으로 추정했으며, 당시 종파별 비율은 시아파 41%, 수니파 27%, 드루즈교 7%로 추산되었다.^[64] 여러 기관의 추정치를 종합하면, 레바논 내 이슬람교도의 비율은 1932년 48%, 1985년 75%, 2010년 54%, 2012년 53.5%, 2018년 61.1% 등으로 변동해 온 것으로 보인다.^{[54][55][56][57][58][59]}

또한, 레바논 내에서는 낙쉬반디 및 카디리야 타리카(수행 공동체)를 포함한 여러 수피파 교단들이 활동하고 있다.^[71][33]

4. 현재의 정치적, 종교적 쟁점

레바논은 세속 국가이지만, 결혼, 이혼, 상속과 같은 가족 문제는 여전히 개인의 종교를 대표하는 종교 당국에서 처리한다. 시민 결혼에 대한 요구는 종교 당국에 의해 만장일치로 거부되지만, 다른 국가에서 거행된 시민 결혼은 레바논 민간 당국에 의해 인정된다.

무신론은 국가에서 인정하지 않는다. 그러나 지아드 바루드 내무부 장관은 2009년에 종교를 레바논 신분증에서 삭제할 수 있도록 했다. 그러나 이것이 국내의 시민 가족 문제에 대한 종교 당국의 완전한 통제를 부인하는 것은 아니다.^[25][26]
