3. 2024년 하계 올림픽 후보 도시

2024년 하계 올림픽 유치 과정은 2015년 9월 16일 국제올림픽위원회(IOC)가 최종 후보 도시를 발표하면서 시작되었다.^[4] IOC는 1단계(비전·대회컨셉·전략), 2단계(대회조직·법리·건설예산), 3단계(대회 전달·경험·경기시설 보존계획)의 3단계 평가 방식을 공개했다.^[5]

최종 후보 도시는 부다페스트, 함부르크, 로스앤젤레스, 파리, 로마였으나,^[6] 이 중 부다페스트, 함부르크, 로마는 국내 정치 및 예산 문제로 후보에서 물러났다.^[6] 함부르크는 2015년 11월 29일 주민투표 결과에 따라,^[7] 로마는 2016년 9월 21일 재정상의 어려움을 이유로,^[8] 부다페스트는 2017년 2월 22일 유치 반대 청원이 국민투표 요건을 넘어서면서 유치 도전을 철회하였다.^[9][10][11]

2017년 3월 30일, IOC 평가단은 로스앤젤레스와 파리를 심의하며 두 도시 모두 창의성과 유산 집중이 뛰어나다고 평가했다.^[12]

2022년 동계 올림픽 유치전에서 4개 도시 중 2개가, 2024년 하계 올림픽 유치전에서 5개 도시 중 3개가 유치를 철회하면서, 2017년 4월 IOC 총회에서 파리와 로스앤젤레스가 각각 2024년과 2028년 대회를 개최하는 방안이 논의되기 시작했다.^[14] 처음에는 두 도시 모두 반대했으나,^[15] 파리가 2024년 대회 유력 후보로 떠오르면서 로스앤젤레스가 양보 의사를 밝혔다.^[16]
