OHSAS 18001

OHSAS 18001, also known as Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001, was an international standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS). It was developed in 1999 by the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series Project Group, and updated in 2007.

The standard provided a framework for organizations to:

• Establish an OHSMS to minimize risks to employees and others.
• Implement, maintain and improve their health and safety performance.
• Manage operational health and safety risks.
• Address changing legislation.
• Ensure legal compliance.

Key areas addressed by OHSAS 18001:

• Hazard identification, risk assessment, and determining controls
• Legal and other requirements
• Objectives and OHS program(s)
• Resources, roles, responsibility, accountability, and authority
• Competence, training, and awareness
• Communication, participation, and consultation
• Operational control
• Emergency preparedness and response
• Performance measuring, monitoring, and improvement

It's important to note that OHSAS 18001 has been replaced by ISO 45001, the current international standard for occupational health and safety. Organizations were given a period to migrate from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001.
