2. 개발과 출시

ORCID는 처음에 "Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative"의 약자였다.[113][70] 2009년 학술 연구 출판사들의 협력 사업으로 처음 발표되었으며, "학술 커뮤니케이션에서 저자 이름의 모호성 문제를 해결"하는 것을 목표로 했다.[5] 법인 설립 전까지 "Open Researcher Contributor Identification Initiative" (ORCID)라는 임시 명칭이 사용되었다.[6][7]

초기 프로토타입은 톰슨 로이터(Thomson Reuters)가 자체 ResearcherID 시스템에 사용한 소프트웨어를 기반으로 개발되었다.[114][8][71] 2010년 8월, 미국 델라웨어주에서 국제 이사회를 둔 독립적인 비영리 단체인 ORCID, Inc.가 설립되었다.[115][9][10][72]

초대 집행 이사로는 로럴 하크가 2012년 4월에 임명되었고,[116][12][73] 2020년 9월에는 크리스 실럼(Chris Shillum)이 후임 집행 이사로 임명되었다.[11] 2016년부터 이사회 의장은 PLOS의 베로니크 키어머가 맡고 있다.[13]

ORCID는 자유롭게 사용할 수 있으며 다른 ID 시스템과 상호 운용이 가능하다.[105][4][62] 2012년 10월 16일, ORCID는 등록 서비스를 시작하고 사용자 식별자를 발급하기 시작했다.[110][14][15][16][67]

ORCID는 국제 표준화 기구(ISO)의 국제 표준 이름 식별자(ISNI)와 협력 관계를 맺고 있으며, ISNI 식별자 체계의 일부를 사용한다.[119][27][76][28][29][77][78]

2. 1. ORCID 식별자 구조

ORCID 식별자는 0부터 9까지의 숫자로 구성된 16자리 식별자이며[28][78], 4자리마다 하이픈(-)으로 구분된다.[47][136][94] 예를 들어, 존 윌뱅크의 ORCID는 http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4510-0385이다.[118][75]

마지막 자리는 검증 숫자로, 0부터 9까지의 숫자 또는 "10"을 의미하는 'X'를 사용할 수 있다.[136][94] 예를 들어, 닉 제닝스의 ORCID는 https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0166-248X이며,[136][124][94][81] 스티븐 호킹의 ORCID는 https://orcid.org/0000-0002-9079-593X이다.[32] 이 검증 숫자는 ISO/IEC 7064:2003 표준에 따른 MOD 11-2 방식을 사용한다.[121]

ORCID ID는 국제 표준 이름 식별자(ISNI)의 하위 집합으로[119][27][76], ISNI와 동일한 16자리 구조를 사용한다.[121][28][78]

공식적으로 ORCID ID는 URL로 지정되며,[117][23] 예를 들어 가상의 인물 조슈아 캔베리(Josiah S. Carberry)의 ORCID ID는 https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1825-0097이다.[24][25][82] 이 ID는 테스트 및 교육용으로 사용된다.[82] 2017년 11월부터는 http:// 대신 https:// 형식이 표준이 되었다.[26] 그러나 일부 출판사에서는 "ORCID: 0000-0002-1825-0097"[47][136][94]과 같은 짧은 형식을 사용하기도 한다.

3. 사용

ORCID는 연구자에게 영구적인 식별 코드를 제공하여[3], 개인 이름의 비고유성 문제를 해결하는 것을 목표로 한다. 동일한 이름을 가진 여러 연구자가 같은 학문 분야나 기관에서 활동할 수 있으며, 결혼 등으로 인한 이름 변경, 이름 표기 규칙의 문화적 차이, 학술지의 이름 접미사나 중간 이름 이니셜 사용 불일치, 다양한 문자 체계 사용 등으로 인해 연구자를 특정하기 어려운 경우가 많기 때문이다.

ORCID의 주요 목적 중 하나는 "과학을 전자-과학(e-science)으로 전환하고, 증가하는 학문적 문서들 속에 숨겨진 연결고리와 아이디어를 발견하는 것"을 돕는 것이다.[125][83] 이를 위해 ORCID는 등록된 사용자에게 "단순한 출판 목록을 넘어서는, 지속적으로 업데이트되는 '디지털 이력서'"를 제공한다.[105][4][62] 이 디지털 이력서는 ORCID에서 호스팅하며 사용자가 직접 관리하고 편집할 수 있다.[4]

네이처 지는 ORCID를 통해 연구자들이 논문뿐만 아니라 "참여한 데이터셋, 동료의 블로그에 남긴 댓글, 발표되지 않은 논문 초안, 위키백과 기여 목록 등" 다양한 학술 활동을 기록하고 관리할 수 있다고 설명했다.[105][62]

또한, 2014년 4월 ORCID는 Consortia Advancing Standards in Research Administration Information(CASRAI)와의 협력을 통해 동료 평가 기여를 기록하고 인정하는 기능을 개발할 계획이라고 발표했다.[126][84]

ORCID는 다른 기관들이 공개된 ORCID 데이터베이스를 활용하여 자체적인 서비스를 구축할 수 있도록 지원하는 것을 목표로 한다.[125]

4. 회원, 스폰서, 등록자

2013년 말 기준으로, ORCID는 111개의 회원 기관과 46만 명 이상의 등록자를 보유하고 있었다.[127][128][129][33][34][35][85][86][87] 등록자 수는 꾸준히 증가하여 2014년 9월 15일에는 900,799명,[130] 같은 해 11월 15일에는 100만 명을 넘어섰다.[17][88] 2020년 11월 20일에는 천만 번째 등록을 발표했으며,[18] 2022년 8월 2일 기준으로 ORCID는 1,258개의 회원 기관과 14,727,479개의 활성 계정을 보유하고 있다고 보고했다.[19][36]

주요 회원 기관으로는 엘스비어, 스프링어 네이처(구 슈프링거), 와일리, 네이처와 같은 주요 학술 출판사들이 있다.[131][37][89] 또한 캘리포니아 공대, 코넬 대학교와 같은 연구 기관, 톰슨 로이터를 포함한 영리 기업, 학술 단체, 그리고 웰컴 트러스트와 같은 자선 재단 및 연구 지원 기관도 회원으로 참여하고 있다.[131][37][89]

웰컴 트러스트와 같은 일부 연구 지원 기관에서는 연구비 지원 신청자에게 ORCID 식별자 제공을 의무화하기 시작했다.[38] 출판사들 역시 ORCID 도입을 적극적으로 지원하고 있다. 2016년 1월 1일에는 여러 출판사들이 특정 기준에 따라 저자들에게 ORCID iD 제출을 요구하기로 약속하는 공개 서한에 서명했다.[20][21] 스프링어 네이처는 2021년 웹사이트 업데이트를 통해, 투고 시스템에서 직접 동료 심사 활동을 ORCID에 등록하고 인정받을 수 있도록 지원할 계획이라고 밝혔다.[22]

한편, 2014년 6월 ORCID는 앤디 매벳(Andy Mabbett)을 기관의 위키피디언 인 레지던스로 임명했다.[132][90]

5. 통합

위키데이터에서의 ORCID 사용


회원, 스폰서, 발행자 및 기타 서비스는 ORCID를 데이터베이스나 워크플로우에 통합하여 활용한다.[133][134][44][45][46][47][48][49] 예를 들어, 신경과학 저널[91][92], 스프링거 출판[93][135], 힌다위 출판 공사[94][136], 유럽 펍메드 센트럴[95][137], 일본 국립정보학연구소의 학자 검색 시스템[96][138] 등이 ORCID를 사용한다. 위키백과와 위키데이터 역시 ORCID 식별자를 사용하며 관련 정보를 포함한다.[97][98][42][43][139]

일부 온라인 서비스는 ORCID와 데이터를 주고받는 기능을 제공한다. Scopus[99][140], Figshare[100][141] 등은 ORCID에서 데이터를 가져오거나 내보내는 기능을 제공한다. 톰슨 로이터는 자체 ResearcherID 시스템과 ORCID 간의 상호 정보 교환 시스템을 제공한다.[101][142]

제3자 도구를 이용해 외부 서비스의 데이터를 ORCID로 이전할 수도 있다.[50][51][52][53][54][55][56] 예를 들어 DataCite[102][143]와 멘델레이[103][144]는 이러한 데이터 이전을 지원하는 도구를 제공한다.

2015년 10월, DataCite, 크로스레프, ORCID는 협력을 발표했다. 새로 등록되는 DOI 이름에 ORCID 식별자가 포함된 경우, DataCite와 Crossref가 해당 연구자의 ORCID 기록을 자동으로 업데이트하도록 했다.[57][58]

일부 ORCID 데이터는 RDF 형식(RDF/XML, RDF 터틀)뿐만 아니라 XML, JSON 형식으로도 검색할 수 있다.[104][145][59][60] ORCID는 코드 저장소로 깃허브를 사용한다.[61]
