3. 1. 계획 (19세기 말 ~ 1910년대 초)

1911년 3월, 헬 게이트를 가로지르는 주요 경간의 애스토리아 측 발굴이 시작되어 연말까지 거의 완료되었다.[77][84][81] 아메리칸 브리지 컴퍼니는 헬 게이트 경간, 워즈 아일랜드 고가교, 퀸스 접근 고가교에 대한 철골 공사 계약을 체결했으며,[85] 맥클린틱-마셜 컴퍼니는 교량의 다른 부분에 대한 강철 제조를 담당했다.[86] 카네기 철강 회사는 1912년 초에 교량용 강판 압연 계약을 체결했다.[87]

헬 게이트 다리는 1931년 뉴욕과 뉴저지 사이에 보욘 다리(Bayonne Bridge)가 완공될 때까지 세계에서 가장 긴 강철 아치교였다.[133][134] 1936년에는 헬 게이트 다리에 평행하게 도로용 현수교인 트라이보로 다리(Triborough Bridge, 현재 RFK 다리)가 개통되었다.[160]

4. 구조

아치의 빔은 약 18.29m 데크의 북쪽과 남쪽을 따라 뻗어 있으며, 데크 양쪽에는 위쪽 현과 역 U자형 단면을 가진 아래쪽 현이 있다. 아래쪽 현은 상자형 단면을 가진다. 두 현은 헬 게이트 양쪽 해안에서 약 42.67m 떨어져 있고, 강 중간에서는 약 12.19m로 좁아진다.[40] 각 하부 현의 두께는 약 약 2.13m에서 약 3.35m이며,[261] 가장 두꺼운 부분은 두 개의 구획으로 나뉜다.[98] 상부 현은 더 얇고 보강 트러스처럼 기능하며,[261] 구조적 보강과 미적 목적을 위해 혹 모양이다. 최대 높이는 약 91.44m (평균 고수위 위 약 92.96m)이다.[1] 빔은 상부 현과 하부 현 사이에 수직 및 대각선으로 뻗어 있고,[114] 다리 양쪽에는 횡 방향 버팀대도 있다.

8개의 스트링거(또는 거더)가 데크 전체 길이를 따라 트랙 아래와 평행하게 뻗어 있고, 양쪽에 건설되지 않은 보도나 트롤리 트랙을 지지하도록 설계된 4개의 추가 스트링거가 있었다. 이들은 24개의 횡 방향 플로어 빔과 교차하며, 16개는 하부 현에서 매달려 있고, 8개는 하부 현과 상부 현 사이의 수직 트러스에 리벳으로 고정되어 있다. 추가 거더는 데크 바닥을 안정시키는 데 사용된다.[281]

4. 3. 2. 퀸스 고가교

퀸스 접근 고가교는 0.72% 이하의 경사로 내려오며, 현지 도로 위를 지나간다. 지면으로부터 약 33.53m에서 약 9.14m 높이에 있다. 29번가 서쪽 구간은 약 874.17m 길이이며, 원래 롱아일랜드 고가교로 알려져 있었다.[114] 서쪽 고가교는 랜들스 및 워즈 아일랜드 위의 고가교와 매우 유사하지만, 퀸스 고가교의 교각은 고가교 아래 자갈과 모래가 있어 얕은 기초를 사용한다. 자갈과 모래는 3ST/ft2 이상의 하중을 견딜 수 없으므로, 퀸스 고가교는 특별히 넓은 콘크리트 교각으로 지지된다.[291]

29번가에서 44번가까지의 구간은 약 1060.70m 길이이며, 원래 동쪽 고가교라고 불렸다. 철근 콘크리트 반원 아치가 애스토리아의 여러 거리 위로 선로를 잇는다.[291][109] 접근 고가교는 31번가에서 뉴욕 지하철의 고가 애스토리아-디트마스 대로역 위를 가로지르며,[293] 더 평평한 아치가 필요한 두 곳에서는 3중심 아치가 사용되었다.[109][294] 워렌 트러스 다리가 교차로 위를 대각선으로 지난다.[96][295] 트러스 다리 구간은 일반적으로 약 36.58m에서 약 50.60m 길이이며,[291][109] 조립식 I-빔으로 만들어진 두꺼운 박스형 기둥으로 구성된다.[295] 동쪽 고가교의 나머지 구간을 따라 트랙은 매립지 위에 놓여 있으며, 이는 옹벽으로 둘러싸여 있다. 옹벽은 함께 볼트로 고정된 슬래브로 만들어졌으며, 매립지는 서니사이드 야드의 발굴에서 나왔다.[296]

5. 운행

헬 게이트 다리는 여객 철도 선로 2개와 암트랙(Amtrak)의 전철화된 노스이스트 코리더 노선 1개, 화물 철도 선로 1개를 운송하며, 이는 뉴욕 연결 철도(New York Connecting Railroad)의 프레몬트 세컨더리 노선의 일부이다.[230][195] 노스이스트 코리더 선로는 롱아일랜드가 미국 본토로 연결되는 몇 안 되는 철도 연결 노선 중 하나이다.[297] 이 다리는 미국 표준 궤간을 사용한다.[298]

헬 게이트 다리 건설 구상은 1900년대 초 펜실베이니아 철도가 뉴욕과 뉴잉글랜드를 잇는 노선을 위해 세웠다. 1916년 9월 30일 개통되었으며, 복복선으로 건설되었지만 현재는 여객용 복선과 화물용 단선으로 사용되고 있다. 다리 자체는 암트랙 소유이며, 암트랙 여객 열차 외에도 CSX 교통, 캐나다 태평양 철도, 뉴욕 앤 애틀랜틱 철도의 화물 열차가 통과한다.

5. 1. 여객 철도

헬 게이트 다리의 서쪽 두 개 선로는 헬 게이트 선의 일부로, 뉴욕과 보스턴 간 ''아셀라 익스프레스'' 및 ''노스이스트 리저널'' 운행에 사용된다.[264] 과거 이 다리 이름을 딴 열차 "'''헬 게이트 익스프레스'''"가 펜 역 - 보스턴 남역 구간에서 운행되었다. 현재는 아셀라 익스프레스가 같은 구간을 운행한다.

5. 2. 화물 철도

5. 3. 전철화

여객 선로는 원래 뉴헤이븐 철도(NH)의 전철화 시스템의 일부였기 때문에 11 kV, 25 Hz 가공 전차선 견인 전력 시스템을 사용하여 전철화되었다.[146] 화물 선로가 전철화되었을 때 화물 열차는 동일한 11 kV, 25 Hz 견인 전력 시스템을 사용했다.[324][325] 암트랙이 1970년대에 노스이스트 코리더를 인수 한 후, 노선을 업그레이드하여 25 kV, 60 Hz 견인 전력 시스템으로 전환할 계획을 발표했다.[326][327] 궁극적으로 헬 게이트 다리 위의 선로 구간은 12.5 kV, 60 Hz 전기 견인으로 업그레이드되었다.[328][329]
