ICBN stands for the International Code of Botanical Nomenclature. It's a set of rules and guidelines for formally naming plants, fungi, and some other groups of organisms, such as algae. The purpose of the ICBN is to ensure that each taxonomic group has only one correct name that is accepted and used worldwide.

Key features and principles of the ICBN (which has now been replaced by ICN) include:

• Universality and Consistency: Provides a standardized system for naming plants, ensuring consistent and unique names.
• Priority of Publication: The first validly published name for a species generally takes precedence.
• Independence from Zoological Nomenclature: Botanical nomenclature operates separately from zoological and bacteriological nomenclature.
• Latinized Names: Scientific names are treated as Latin, regardless of their origin.
• Hierarchical Ranking: Includes a system to show taxonomic ranks, such as kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, and species, providing the hierarchy mode of ending for some of the ranks.
• One Correct Name: It ensures each plant has only one universally recognized and correct name.

The ICBN was renamed the International Code of Nomenclature for algae, fungi, and plants (ICN) in 2011 at the International Botanical Congress in Melbourne. The rules were made effective on July 29, 2017, and the code in its final form, called the Shenzhen Code, was published on June 26, 2018.
