Shammah

The name "Shammah" appears multiple times in the Hebrew Bible, referring to different individuals:

1. Son of Reuel: An Edomite chief, son of Reuel and grandson of Esau (Genesis 36:13, 17; 1 Chronicles 1:37).

2. Son of Jesse: The third son of Jesse and brother of King David (1 Samuel 16:9; 17:13). He is also called Shimeah (2 Samuel 13:3) and Shimma (1 Chronicles 2:13).

• He fought with his brothers under Saul against the Philistines (1 Samuel 17:13).
• He witnessed Samuel anointing David as king (1 Samuel 16:1-13).
• His son, Jonadab, was a friend of Amnon (2 Samuel 13:3).
• Another son, Jonathan, defeated a Philistine giant (2 Samuel 21:20).

3. One of David's Mighty Men: The son of Agee the Hararite, and one of King David's three legendary "mighty men". (2 Samuel 23:11-17).

• His most notable achievement was defeating a troop of Philistines. After other Israelites fled, Shammah stood his ground in a lentil field and defeated the Philistines himself (2 Samuel 23:11-12).
• There is a suggestion that Shammah might be the same person as Shamgar, who is mentioned in the book of Judges as having defeated 600 Philistines with an ox goad (Judges 3:31).

4. Another of David's Mighty Men: (2 Samuel 23:25) Also called Shammoth (1 Chronicles 11:27) and Shamhuth (1 Chronicles 27:8).

"Jehovah Shammah" is a symbolic name given to a city in a vision of the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel 48:35), meaning "The Lord is There." This refers to the presence of God. It can be associated with the Shekinah glory, which represents God's visible presence, appearing as a bright, shining cloud or fire.
