Beer is a carbonated, fermented alcoholic beverage typically made from malted cereal grain (especially barley), flavored with hops, and usually containing less than 5% alcohol. It is produced by brewing and fermentation of starches, mainly from malted barley, though wheat, maize (corn), rice, and oats can be used.

The process involves mashing the grain to convert starch into sugars, dissolving them in water to make wort. The wort is then fermented by yeast, producing ethanol and carbonation. Beer is one of the oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic drinks globally, and it ranks as the third most popular beverage overall, after water and tea.

There are primarily two main types of beer, lagers and ales, but there is a third category called hybrid. In some countries like Germany, beer is legally defined with standard ingredients, water, malt, hops, and yeast.
