1. 개요

왕립학회 회원은 매년 선출되는 FRS(정회원), HonFRS(명예 회원), ForMemRS(외국인 회원)을 포함한다. 회원들은 과학 분야의 우수성을 기준으로 종신직으로 선출되며, 최대 60명의 신입 회원이 선출된다. 정회원은 영국, 영연방 국가 및 아일랜드에서 선출되며, 외국인 회원은 다른 국가의 과학자를 대상으로 한다. 명예 회원은 과학적 업적 외에 과학 발전에 기여한 인물에게 수여된다. 왕립학회는 또한 연구 회원직과 다양한 상을 수여하며, 신입 회원은 7월 입회식에서 헌장에 서명한다.

2. 회원

왕립학회 회원(FRS, HonFRS, ForMemRS)은 매년 4월 말 또는 5월 초에 약 700명의 후보자 풀에서 최대 60명까지 선출된다.[130] 새로운 회원은 기존의 회원에 의해서만 지명될 수 있으며, 추천 및 동료 평가 선정 기간을 거친 후 매년 5월에 발표된다.[107]



왕립학회 회원 자격은 가디언지에 따르면 "오스카 특별 공로상에 필적하는 명예"로 여겨지며,[69] 수상자가 소속된 연구 기관은 그 명예를 홍보하는 것이 일반적이다.[70][71][72][73][74][75][76]

아이작 뉴턴(1672년)[59], 찰스 다윈(1839년)[59], 마이클 패러데이(1824년)[59], 어니스트 러더퍼드(1903년)[60], 스리니바사 라마누잔(1919년)[61], 알베르트 아인슈타인(1921년)[62], 윈스턴 처칠(1941년), 수브라마니안 찬드라세카르(1944년)[63], 도로시 호지킨(1947년)[64], 앨런 튜링(1951년)[65], 프랜시스 크릭(1959년)[66][67] 등 역사적으로 많은 유명 과학자들이 왕립학회 회원이었다. 스티븐 호킹(1974년), 티머시 헌트(1991년), 엘리자베스 H. 블랙번(1992년), 팀 버너스 리(2001년), 벤카트라만 라마크리슈난(2003년), 안드레 가임(2007년), 제임스 다이슨(2015년), 에이제이 K. 수드(2015년) 등 1900년 이후 280명 이상의 노벨상 수상자를 포함하여 총 8,000명 이상이 회원으로 선출되었다.[68] 2016년 현재 약 1,600명의 생존 회원이 있다(외국인 회원, 명예 회원 포함).[68]

2. 1. 정회원 (FRS)

매년 4월 말 또는 5월 초에 약 700명의 후보자 풀에서 최대 60명의 신입 회원(FRS, Fellow of the Royal Society)이 선출된다.[130] 새로운 회원은 기존의 회원에 의해서만 지명될 수 있다.

매년 영국, 나머지 영연방 국가 및 아일랜드에서 최대 52명의 새로운 회원이 선출되는데, 이들이 전체 회원의 약 90%를 차지한다.[131][132] 각 후보는 자신의 업적에 따라 고려되며 과학계의 모든 부문에서 제안될 수 있다. 회원은 과학의 우수성을 기준으로 종신직으로 선출되며 성명 뒤에 FRS를 붙일 수 있다.[107]

회원 및 외국인 회원의 후보는 왕립학회 회원 2명(제안자 및 찬성자)의 추천을 받아 제안 증명서에 서명한다.[90] 이전에는 추천인이 제안자의 지명을 지원하기 위해 최소 5명의 회원이 필요했다.[90] 이는 동창회 인맥을 초래하고 엘리트에 의한 신사 클럽을 만들 것이라고 비판받았다.[91][92][93]

왕립학회 평의회는 선출 과정을 감독하고, 펠로우십 선거에서 가장 강력한 후보자를 추천하기 위해 섹션 위원회라고 불리는 10개의 분야별 위원회를 임명한다.[68] 최대 52명의 펠로우 후보자와 최대 10명의 외국인 회원 후보자의 최종 목록이 이사회에서 4월에 확인되며, 5월에 펠로우십의 비밀 투표가 개최된다. 후보자는 출석하여 투표한 펠로우의 투표 3분의 2를 확보할 경우 선출된다.

물리 과학 및 생물 과학 후보자에서 최대 18명, 응용 과학, 인문 과학, 생물 물리학에서 최대 10명의 펠로우를 할당할 수 있다. 최대 6명은 '명예', '일반', '왕족' 펠로우이다. 펠로우 후보자는 15명의 멤버와 1명의 의장으로 구성된 섹션 위원회에서 피어 리뷰를 받는다. 10개의 섹션 위원회 멤버는 내집단 편향을 완화하기 위해 3년마다 바뀐다.[90] 각 그룹은 다음을 포함한 다양한 전문 분야를 다룬다.

2. 2. 외국인 회원 (ForMemRS)

매년 회원들은 최대 10명의 새로운 외국인 회원(Foreign Member)을 선출한다. 회원들과 마찬가지로 외국인 회원은 과학의 우수성을 바탕으로 동료 평가를 통해 종신직으로 선출된다. 2016년 기준, 약 165명의 외국인 회원이 있으며, 이들은 명칭 뒤에 ForMemRS를 사용할 자격이 있다.[133]

제니퍼 다우드나는 2016년에 외국인 회원으로 선출되었다.

2. 3. 명예 회원 (HonFRS)

명예회원직(Honorary Fellowship)은 과학 분야에 탁월한 공헌을 했지만, 회원 또는 외국인 회원에게 요구되는 수준의 과학적 업적은 없는 후보자에게 수여되는 명예 학술 칭호이다. 명예회원은 이름 뒤에 HonFRS를 붙여 사용할 수 있다.[136]

빌 브라이슨은 2013년 명예 회원으로 선출되었다.

2. 4. 구 규정 제12조 회원

데이비드 애튼버러는 1983년 구 제12호에 따라 회원으로 선출되었다.


구 규정 제12조는 1997년 명예회원 제도가 공식적으로 생기기 이전, 명예회원을 선출하기 위한 절차였다.[35] 이 규정에 따라 선출된 회원으로는 데이비드 애튼버러 (1983년), 존 파머, 제4대 셀본 백작 (1991년) 등이 있다.

1903년부터 1996년 사이에 존재했던 "규정 12"는 1997년에 공식 명예 회원 제도가 생기기 전 회원을 선출하기 위한 오래된 방식이었다. 규정 12에서는 "과학에 공헌하여 저명한 봉사를 제공한 자, 또는 선출함으로써 학회에 현저한 이익을 가져다줄 자"를 회원으로 선출할 수 있었다.

규정 12에 따라 선출된 회원으로는 데이비드 애튼버러(1983년), John Palmer, 4th Earl of Selborne|제4대 셀본 백작 존 파머영어 등이 있다. 마거릿 대처(1983년)[59], 네빌 체임벌린(1938년)[59], 허버트 헨리 애스퀴스(1908년)[59] 등의 영국의 총리도 규정 12에 따라 선출되었다.

2. 5. 왕실 회원

왕립학회 평의회는 영국 왕실 구성원을 왕립학회 왕실 회원(Royal Fellow)으로 추천할 수 있다. 2016년 기준으로 다음 다섯 명의 왕실 회원이 있었다.

엘리자베스 2세는 왕실 회원이 아니었지만, 찰스 2세 이후 모든 영국 군주들처럼 왕립학회에 후원을 제공했다. 에든버러 공작 필립공 (1951)은 왕실 회원이 아니라 규정 제12조에 따라 선출되었다.[142]

3. 연구 회원 및 기타 지원



왕립학회의 주요 회원직(FRS, ForMemRS & HonFRS) 이외에도 개인이 신청하는 다른 회원직이 있다. 이러한 회원직의 소유자는 왕립학회 '''연구회원'''(Research Fellow)으로 알려져 있다.[153]

위에 설명한 회원직(FRS, HonFRS & ForMemRS) 및 연구 회원직 외에도 왕립학회의 여러 다른 상과 강의 및 메달도 수여된다.

4. 입회

신입 회원은 매년 7월에 개최되는 공식 입회식에서 입회하며,[149] 이때 회원들은 헌장과 아래의 의무에 서명한다.

"이에 아래와 같이 서명한 우리는, 자연 지식의 향상을 위한 런던 왕립학회의 이익 증진을 위해 노력하고 동 기관이 설립된 목적을 추구하며 위원회의 이름으로 요청한 조치를 가능한 한 수행할 것과, 상기 학회의 규정(Statutes)과 상임 규칙(Standing Orders)을 준수할 것을 서약합니다. 다만 우리 중 누구라도 학회에서 탈퇴하기를 원한다고 회장에게 서명한 때에는, 우리는 이러한 의무로부터 향후에는 해제될 것입니다."[107]

2014년부터 입회식에 참석한 회원의 초상은 폭넓은 재사용을 허용하는 보다 허용적인 크리에이티브 커먼즈 라이선스에 따라 저작권 제한 없이 위키미디어 공용에 게시되었다.[150][151]
