2. 생애

얀 드 브리스는 1943년 11월 14일 네덜란드 아우더르암스털에서 태어났으나, 곧바로 미국으로 이민하여 미국 국적을 취득했고 현재까지 미국 시민이다. 컬럼비아 대학교에서 학사 학위를 받았고 1970년 예일 대학교에서 박사 학위를 받았다. 1977년부터 역사학 교수로 재직했으며, 1982년부터는 버클리에서 경제 분야도 함께 연구했다.

특히 그는 근세 네덜란드 경제사에 관해 연구했으며, 아드 반 데르 보우드와 함께 《최초의 근대 경제, 1500-1815년 네덜란드 경제의 성공, 실패, 그리고 지속(The First Modern Economy. Success, Failure and Perseverance of the Dutch Economy from 1500 to 1815)》을 저술했다. 이 책으로 1999년 기오르기 란키 최고 경제사 서적상을 수상했다.[9] 그 외에도 도시사, 기후사, 세계사, 인구사, 근세 노동시장과 예술시장의 역사에 대해 연구했다.
