2. 분류

속 ''Pica''는 1760년 프랑스 동물학자 마튀랭 자크 브리송이 명명했다.^[2][3] 브리송은 1758년 칼 린네가 명명한 유럽까치(''Corvus pica'')의 종명에서 동음이의어로 이름을 따왔다.^[3][4] ''Pica''는 유럽까치를 뜻하는 라틴어 단어이다.^[5]

2018년 분자 계통학 연구에 따르면 유럽까치는 마그레브까치, 아시르까치, 검은등까치, 동양까치 등 여러 종으로 구성되어 있다.^[6]

마요르카 섬의 신세와 홍적세 경계에서는 화석종 ''Pica mourerae''가 발견되었다.
