2. 형태

심피사노돈속의 가장 큰 종은 길이가 20cm에 이른다.[1] 몸은 가늘고 옆으로 납작하며, 주둥이는 뭉툭하다. 색깔은 빨간색, 분홍색, 주황색 또는 노란색을 띤다. 꼬리지느러미는 일반적으로 뚜렷하게 갈라져 있다. 등지느러미에는 9개의 등 가시와 10개의 연조가 있으며, 뒷지느러미에는 3개의 뒷지느러미 가시와 7개 또는 8개의 연조가 있다.[3]
