랠리는 버지니아 대학교(UVA)의 여름 학기와 가을 학기 사이에 예정되어 있었다.[141] 8월 4일, 대학교 총장 테레사 설리번은 학생과 교직원에게 이메일을 보내 "학생들과 모든 UVA 구성원들이 8월 12일 집회를 피하고, 일반적으로 신체적 대립을 피하도록 촉구하며, 이 행사에서 폭력의 현실적인 위험이 있고, 안전이 가장 큰 관심사이다."라고 말했다.[125] 버지니아 대학교 의료 센터는 모든 선택적 수술을 취소하고, 예방적으로 비상 대응 계획을 가동했다.[126][127] 폭력 사태를 우려하여, 버지니아 발견 박물관과 일부 시내 상점들은 집회 당일 휴업했다.[67]
버지니아 공공 안전 및 국토 안보 장관 브라이언 모란은 주 정부가 집회를 위해 무기 및 몽둥이 금지, 특정 주차 구역 지정, 최소 10블록 교통 통제 등과 같은 여러 보안 권고안을 시에 전달했지만, 시는 이러한 제한 조치를 시행하지 않았다고 밝혔다. 시 매니저 모리스 존스는 시 조례에 따라 시가 주 정부의 제안 중 일부를 시행하는 것이 불가능하다고 말했다.[128]
시위대와 반대 시위대는 랠리를 앞두고 오전 8시부터 엠시페이션 공원에 모이기 시작했다. 랠리는 정오에 시작하여 오후 5시까지 진행될 예정이었다. 백인 민족주의 시위대는 백인 우월주의와 나치 시대의 구호를 외쳤다.[123][151] 일부는 남부 연합기를 흔들었고, 다른 사람들은 "고임들은 안다"와 "유대 언론은 무너진다"라고 적힌 유대인을 겨냥한 포스터를 들었다.[152] 시위대는 또한 사인너가 언급되자 인종 차별적 욕설과 "유대인"을 외쳤고, 일부는 나치 깃발과 "유대인은 사탄의 자녀다"와 같은 내용의 표지판을 흔들었다. 수십 명의 시위대는 트럼프의 빨간색 "Make America Great Again" 선거 모자를 착용했다.[152]
토요일 아침, 베스 이스라엘 회중의 안식일 예배자들은 길 건너편에서 반자동 소총을 든 군복 차림의 남성들과 그들의 건물을 불태우라는 나치 웹사이트의 요구에 직면하여, 안전을 위해 회중의 토라 두루마리를 들고 뒷문으로 회당을 나가는 것이 신중하다고 느꼈다.[153]
반대 시위는 팔짱을 끼고 기도하며 평화의 노래를 부르는 종교 간, 인종 간 성직자 그룹으로 시작되었다.[154] "This Little Light of Mine"과 같은 노래가 불렸다.[155] 그날 늦게, 반대 시위대는 "모든 나치를 죽여라"[156]와 "나치의 입을 주먹으로 치세요"와 같은 구호를 외쳤다.[157] 무장 좌익 단체인 레드넥 반란군은 웹사이트에 "파시스트와 그들과 함께하는 모든 사람들에게, 우리는 버지니아에서 당신을 만날 것이다"라고 게시했다.[159] 반대 시위의 일부를 조직한 하버드 대학교 교수 코넬 웨스트는 "우리 중 20명, 그 중 많은 성직자들이 서 있었는데, 만약 300, 350명 이상의 무정부주의자와 반파시스트가 접근하지 않았다면 바퀴벌레처럼 짓밟혔을 것이며, 신파시스트들은 자체 탄약을 가지고 있었고 경찰이 대부분 물러섰기 때문에 이것을 기억하는 것이 매우 중요하다"라고 말했다.[155]
버지니아는 주법에 따라 총기 공개 소지를 허용하고,[160] 많은 시위대와 반대 시위대는 무장했으며, 일부는 반자동 화기로 무장했다.[160][161][140] 이는 현장에 있던 경찰에게 큰 어려움을 안겨주었다.[160][161] 많은 시위대와 반대 시위대는 방패, 막대기, 클럽을 휴대했고,[140][242][162] 방탄복과 헬멧도 착용했다.[137]
랠리에서, 메릴랜드에 기반을 둔 쿠 클럭스 클랜의 남부 연합 백인 기사단의 자칭 제국 마법사 리처드 W. 프레스턴은 스프레이에 불을 붙인 에어로졸 캔을 들고 있던 아프리카계 미국인 반대 시위자인 코리 A. 롱에게 권총을 쏘는 모습이 비디오에 포착되었다.[163] 프레스턴은 나중에 노 컨테스트를 외친 후 학교에서 무기를 발사한 혐의로 유죄 판결을 받았다. 롱은 경범죄 폭행 및 소란 행위로 기소되었다.[163] 롱의 폭행 혐의는 검사가 피해자라고 주장하는 해럴드 크루를 데려올 수 없었을 때 기각되었다. 롱은 크루가 휘두른 깃대에 대해 다퉜었다. 검사는 판사에게 실제 구금을 하지 말 것을 요청했고 롱은 항상 정중했고 이 사건에 대해 자발적으로 형사들과 이야기했다고 말했다. 롱은 소란 행위로 유죄 판결을 받았고 20일의 징역형, 340일의 집행 유예, 100시간의 사회 봉사 명령을 받았다.[164] 한 방관자는 롱의 재판에서 자신 뒤에 있는 사람이 롱에 대해 "흑인을 죽여라!"라고 외치는 것을 증언했고, 그는 돌아서서 프레스턴과 다른 남자가 롱을 향해 접근하는 것을 보았고, 프레스턴은 권총을 꺼냈다. 그는 낮은 벽에 서 있던 롱이 살해될까 봐 두려웠다고 말했다. 그는 프레스턴이 발사한 총알이 롱의 발 옆 흙에 맞았다고 말했다.[164]
랠리가 공식적으로 시작되기 전인 아침부터[165] 시위대와 반대 시위대는 서로 맞서 싸우며 발로 차고, 주먹질하고, 물병을 던지고, 화학 스프레이를 뿌렸다.[166][167] 약 500명의 시위대와 1,000명 이상의 반대 시위대가 현장에 있었다.[137][166] AP 통신은 사람들이 주먹질을 하고, 소리를 지르고, 연막탄을 터뜨리고, 물병을 던지고, 화학 스프레이를 뿌렸으며, 일부는 격투를 벌이는 반면 다른 사람들은 혼돈을 피하려고 이리저리 뛰어다녔다고 보도했다.[137] 적어도 14명이 거리 싸움에서 부상을 입었다.[152]
랠리 후, 백인 우월주의자 크리스토퍼 캔트웰은 "가스 불법 사용, 부식성 물질 또는 폭발물에 의한 부상"과 관련된 중범죄로 버지니아 검찰에 기소된 후 4건의 체포 영장이 발부되었다.[168][169] 별도로, ''The Hill''의 기자 테일러 로렌츠는 폭력 사태 중에 반대 시위자들에게 주먹질을 당했다고 주장했고, 소셜 미디어에 게시된 비디오는 군중이 리 공원을 떠날 때 한 남성 시위자가 여성을 주먹으로 때리는 모습을 보여주었다. 두 남자는 같은 날 체포되었다.[170][171] 둘 다 나중에 경범죄 폭행 및 구타에 대해 유죄를 인정했다.[172] 사우스캐롤라이나주 요크 출신의 스티븐 발카이티스는 비디오에 촬영된 공격으로 반대 시위자를 목 졸라 폭행한 혐의로 체포되었다.[173][174][175] 발카이티스는 폭행 혐의를 인정하고 180일의 집행 유예를 받았다.[176]
미 해병대 바실리오스 피스톨리스는 아톰바펜 디비전 테러 단체의 일원으로, 동료 시위대와 함께 "백인의 삶은 중요하다"와 "우리는 당신을 대체하지 않을 것입니다!"라고 외치는 모습이 녹화되었다. 그는 나중에 흑태양이 포함된 수정된 버전의 남부 연합기로 트랜스젠더 여성을 폭행했다고 자랑했다.[177][178] 그는 나중에 2018년 6월 명령 불복종 및 허위 진술 혐의로 미 해병대 군사 재판에 회부되어 1개월의 구금형과 이후 추정되는 제대 처분을 받았다.[179]
12일 오전 11시, 샬러츠빌시는 "임박한 시민 소요, 불안, 개인의 잠재적 부상 및 공공 및 개인 재산 파괴"를 이유로 비상사태를 선포했다. 한 시간 뒤, 버지니아 주지사 테리 매컬리프는 비상사태를 선포하며 "추가 권한 없이는 공공 안전을 보호할 수 없다는 것이 분명해졌으며, 주로 외부에서 온 시위대는 우리 시민과 재산을 위험에 빠뜨리기 위해 버지니아에 왔다. 나는 이러한 시위대가 우리 주에 가져온 증오, 편견, 폭력에 혐오감을 느낀다"라고 말했다.[123]

무산된 집회 이후, 오후 1시 45분경에,[182] 제임스 알렉스 필즈 주니어는 자신의 차를 반대 시위 군중 속으로 몰아넣어 여러 명을 치고 멈춰 있던 세단과 충돌했고, 이 세단은 다시 멈춰 있던 미니밴을 쳤고, 둘 다 군중 속으로 밀려 들어갔다. 필즈는 그 후 차를 군중 속으로 후진하여 몰고 갔다. 1명이 사망하고 35명이 부상을 입었다. 경찰은 이 공격이 고의적이었다고 판단했다.[24][194] 차량 돌진은 리 파크에서 약 4블록 떨어진 워터 스트리트와 포스 스트리트의 보행자 전용 거리에서 발생했다.[183] 샬러츠빌 출신의 32세 법률 보조원 헤더 D. 헤이어는 이 공격으로 치명상을 입고 버지니아 대학교 병원에서 사망 판정을 받았다.[184][185][190] 브레넌 길모어가 현장에서 촬영한 영상에는 2010년형 회색 닷지 챌린저가 보행자 전용 거리에서 군중을 향해 속도를 높여 사람들을 치고 공중으로 날려 보낸 다음, 고속으로 후진하여 더 많은 사람들을 치는 모습이 담겨 있었다.[152] 차가 군중 속으로 돌진하는 순간은 주변 사람들과 드론이 촬영한 공중 비디오 영상에 포착되었다.[186] 현장에 있던 한 사진작가는 그 차가 "세단으로 돌진한 다음 미니밴으로 돌진했다. 시체가 날아갔다. 사람들은 공포에 질려 비명을 질렀다"고 말했다. 주변 사람들은 '가디언'에 따르면 "분명한 폭력적인 공격"이었다고 말했다.[180]
부상자 35명 중 버지니아 대학교 의료 센터는 5명이 처음에는 위중한 상태였다고 보고했다.[152] 8월 14일 오후까지 10명의 환자가 병원에서 퇴원했고, 남아 있는 9명의 환자는 양호한 상태였다.[187] '''헤더 다니엘 하이어'''[188] (1985년 5월 29일 ~ 2017년 8월 12일)는 공격으로 사망한 유일한 인물이었다.[189] 그녀는 랠리 당시 법률 회사에서 법률 보조원으로 일했으며, 바텐더와 웨이트리스로도 일했다.[190] 하이어와 그녀의 오랜 친구는 랠리가 너무 위험하다고 생각하여 시위에 참여하지 않기로 동의했지만, 시위 전날 밤 하이어는 억누를 수 없어 시위에 참여하게 되었다.[188] 하이어의 어머니 수잔 브로(Susan Bro)는 헤더의 이름이 "정의, 평등, 공정함, 연민을 위한 외침"이 되기를 바란다고 말했다.[191] 하이어의 추모식은 8월 16일 샬러츠빌 파라마운트 극장에서 열렸고, 하이어의 어머니는 수백 명의 조문객에게 연설하며 하이어를 기리기 위해 불의에 맞서 행동하고 "분노를 정당한 행동으로" 바꾸라고 요청했다.[192]
충돌 직후, 오하이오 출신으로 켄터키주 유니온에 있는 쿠퍼 고등학교 재학 시절 나치 독일에 대한 동조적인 발언을 한 것으로 알려진 20세의 제임스 알렉스 필즈 주니어가 체포되어 제2급 살인 혐의로 기소되었다.[193][194] 필즈는 백인 우월주의 단체인 뱅가드 아메리카의 로고가 새겨진 방패를 들고 집회에 참여한 모습이 사진으로 찍혔다. 뱅가드 아메리카의 지도자들은 그가 회원이 아니며 "보이는 방패는 회원 자격을 나타내는 것이 아니다"라고 말했는데, 이는 방패가 "참석자 누구에게나 자유롭게 나눠줬기" 때문이다.[195] 8월 14일, 필즈는 다시 보석을 거부당했다.[196] 그는 앨버말-샬러츠빌 카운티 지역 교도소에 수감되었다.[194]
미국 국가 안보 보좌관 H. R. 맥마스터와 여러 미국 상원 의원들은 이 램 공격을 국내 테러 행위로 묘사했으며, 여러 논평가들도 마찬가지였다.[197][198] 8월 12일 늦은 밤, 미국 법무부 장관 제프 세션스는 미국 법무부가 이 사건에 대한 시민권 조사를 시작할 것이라고 밝혔으며, 연방 수사관들은 용의자가 "폭력을 저지를 의도로 주 경계를 넘었는지" 여부를 조사할 것이다.[199][200] 이후, 세션스는 램 공격이 '국내 테러'의 정의에 부합하며 "용납할 수 없고 사악한 공격"이라고 말했다.[201] 헤이어 가족과 충돌 사고 부상자들을 위한 별도의 GoFundMe 페이지가 개설되었으며, 후자는 미국 민주 사회주의자(Democratic Socialists of America)의 앵커리지 공동 의장이 조직했다.[202] UVA 헬스 재단은 "우리 지역 사회의 이 원치 않는 폭력으로 인해 부상을 입고 영향을 받은 UVA 메디컬 센터와 센타라 마사 제퍼슨 병원의 환자"의 의료비를 위한 기금을 조성했다.[203][204] 차량 사고로 부상을 입은 두 명의 운전자가 이 행사의 주최자와 운전자를 상대로 소송을 제기했다.[205]
2018년 8월 9일, NPR에 글을 기고한 데비 엘리엇은 "샬러츠빌은 인종 갈등의 대명사가 되었다"고 언급했다. 엘리엇은 또한 랠리가 "[도시]가 [그것의] 인종 역사를 재고하도록 강요했다"고 언급하며 "새로운 이야기는 샬러츠빌 인구의 거의 20%를 차지하는 백인이 아닌 사람들이 오랫동안 인종적 불평등을 겪어왔기 때문에 나오고 있다"고 덧붙였지만, "그 이야기가 증폭되면서 일부는 대화에서 소외될까 두려워하고 있다"고 말했다.[481]
2018년 8월 10일, 톰 페리에로 정치인은 ''슬레이트''에 기고한 글에서 "증가하는 증거는 유나이트 더 라이트의 진정한 유산이 역사 수정주의와 불의의 악에 맞서 더 나은 미래를 만들기 위해 용감하게 맞서는 반대편에 의해 형성된 단결일 것임을 시사한다"고 주장했다. 페리에로는 또한 랠리가 "'양쪽' 저널리즘의 점진적인 종말"을 시작했을 수 있으며, "나치들의 파산과 투옥"을 초래했고, 민주당이 11월에 2017년 버지니아 주지사 선거에서 승리하는 데 기여했으며, "백인 동맹의 기준을 높였고", 그 결과 "오늘날의 백인 동맹은 더 많고, 지배할 것을 덜 기대하며, 최전선에서 백인 특권을 방패로 사용할 준비가 더 잘 되어 있다"고 주장했다.[482]
또한 8월 10일, 정치학자 카스 머드는 ''가디언''에 기고한 글에서 "샬러츠빌의 신화는 랠리가 극우에게 큰 성공이었다는 것이다. 조직자들은 랠리에 대해 두 가지 주요 정치적 목표를 가지고 있었다. 첫째, 극우가 단순한 소셜 미디어 현상이 아니라는 것을 보여주는 것이고, 둘째, 다양한 극우 단체를 하나로 모으는 것이었다. 이 두 가지 목표 중 어느 것도 실현되지 않았다."며 "극단적인 '극우'와 급진적인 '얼트-라이트'를 재결합하려는 랠리의 목표는 그들이 더욱 멀어지면서 실패했다"고 주장했다.[483]
2020년 8월 유나이트 더 라이트 랠리 3주년을 맞아, 변호사 로베르타 카플란과 홀로코스트 역사가 데보라 립스타트는 CNN에 기고한 글에서 "샬러츠빌에서 드러난 폭력과 증오가 일시적인 순간이나 일회성 사건이 아니라는 것이 이제 분명해졌다"고 주장하며, 그 이후에 발생한 여러 차례의 살인과 총격 사건을 언급했다. "이 모든 것은 샬러츠빌에 온 단체와 개인들이 자랑스럽게 외친 슬로건과 세계관과 연결되어 있고 이를 반영했다"고 언급하며, 2018년 피츠버그 유대교 회당 총격 사건, 2019년 크라이스트처치 모스크 총격 사건, 2019년 포웨이 유대교 회당 총격 사건, 2019년 엘파소 총격 사건, 2019년 할레 유대교 회당 총격 사건을 포함했다.[484]
랠리 5주년을 맞아 샬러츠빌에서 여러 기념 행사가 열렸으며, 버지니아 대학교 예배당에서 묵념의 시간을 가졌다. 반명예훼손 연맹은 성명을 발표하여 랠리가 "미국을 경악하게 했고 국내 극단주의의 심각한 위협을 분명하게 부각시켰다"고 밝혔으며, "오늘날 백인 우월주의자들은 메시지와 전술을 재고했지만, 피츠버그, 엘파소, 포웨이, 버팔로에서 발생한 공격과 취약한 지역 사회를 위협하고 우리의 민주주의를 전복하려는 시도에 참여하는 것으로 분명히 나타났듯이, 중요한 위협으로 남아 있다"고 덧붙였다.[485] 남부 빈곤 법률 센터는 "백인 우월주의자들이 버지니아주 샬러츠빌에 내려온 지 5년이 지난 지금, 그들이 보호하려 했던 동상은 사라졌고, 그들이 구현했던 '얼트-라이트' 연합은 붕괴되었다. 동시에 극우 극단주의가 미국에 가하는 실존적 위협은 지금껏 그 어느 때보다 심각해졌다"고 밝혔다.[486] NPR에 따르면, "인종 정의 옹호자들은 [샬러츠빌의] 테러를 국가의 전환점으로 보고 있으며, 이는 작년에 미국 국회의사당에 대한 공격을 포함하여 극우 정치 폭력을 부추겼다." 이 집회는 전 민주당 지지자이기도 했던 논객이 주최했으며, 집회에 모인 사람들은 백인 우월주의, 백인 민족주의, 얼터너티브 우익, 네오-컨페더레이트, 네오 나치, 민병대 운동의 멤버들이 포함되어 있었다. 그 외에도 유명 논객 리처드 B. 스펜서가 참가했다. 참가자들은 공공 공간에서 미국 남부 연합의 기념물이나 기념관, 특히 해방 공원에 있는 로버트 E. 리 동상의 철거에 항의했다.
이에 대해 백인 우월주의에 반대하는 지역 주민과 교회의 목사들의 호소에 모인 사람들,[497] 안티파, 반 흑인 차별 단체, 레드넥 리볼트와 같은 이 집회에 반대하는 사람들이 항의 활동을 벌였다.
8월 11일 밤에는 미리 모여 있던 참가자들이 횃불을 들고 행진했고, 이에 반대하기 위해 모여 있던 학생 그룹 등과 충돌하여 최루 스프레이가 사용되는 등의 사태가 발생했다. 집회 당일인 8월 12일에는 아침 일찍부터 지역 교회의 목사들의 호소로 모인 사람들이 찬송가와 복음을 부르며 평화를 호소했다. 참가자들은 이후 해방 공원으로 행진했지만, 공원에 들어가기 전에 대기하고 있던 집회 반대자들과 충돌이 일어나, 반대 측은 물건을 던지거나 색깔 있는 액체를 던졌고, 참가자 측은 방패나 곤봉 등을 사용하여 응전하는 등 혼란이 발생했다.
버지니아 주지사 테리 매컬리프는 비상 사태 선포를 했고, 예정되어 있던 집회는 공식적으로 중단되었다. 이에 따라 버지니아 주 경찰이 동원되어 최루 스프레이 등을 사용하여 군중에게 해산을 요구했다. 참가자들이 해산하는 과정에서, 일부 참가자들이 항의하기 위해 온 흑인 남성을 폭행하는 사건이 발생했다(그는 막대기를 들고 참가자들을 위협하려 했다는 설도 있다). 폭행에 가담한 여러 인물이 체포되었다. 그 후, 자동차(다지 챌린저)가 시위에 항의하는 사람들 사이로 돌진하여 여성 1명이 사망하고 19명이 부상했다.[496] 용의자는 백인 우월주의 그룹의 멤버로 보이는 제임스 알렉스 필즈 주니어였으며, 이후 재판에서 무기 징역이 확정되었다.
사건 직후, 매컬리프 주지사는 긴급 기자 회견을 열어 "오늘 샬러츠빌에 모인 모든 백인 우월주의와 네오 나치에게 전하고 싶은 말이 있다. 우리의 메시지는 아주 간단하다. 돌아가라. 너희는 이 위대한 주에 필요 없다. 부끄러운 줄 알아라. 너희는 애국심을 흉내 내고 있지만, 애국자는 전혀 아니다. 너희는 오늘 사람들을 상처 입히기 위해 여기에 모였고, 실제로 상처를 입혔다. 나의 메시지는 명확하다. 우리의 다양성을 파괴하는 것을 허용하지 않을 것이다. 그러니 제발, 돌아가라. 그리고 두 번 다시 돌아오지 마라. 증오도 편견도, 여기에는 필요 없다"라고 호소했다.[498]
미국 법무부는 이 공격을 홈그로운 테러리즘으로 인정하고, 증오 범죄로 재판에 회부할지 여부를 결정하기 위해 이 공격에 대한 시민권 조사를 시작했다.[499] 다른 충돌로 최소 19명의 부상자가 발생했다.[496] 이 소란에 대응하던 경찰관을 운송하던 헬리콥터가 샬러츠빌에서 남서쪽으로 11km 떨어진 곳에 추락하여 경찰관과 조종사 2명이 사망했다.[500]
사건에 대한 성명에서 트럼프 대통령이 "쌍방에 책임이 있다"고 기자 회견에서 언급한 것이 문제가 되어,[501] 백인 우월주의자들을 직접 비난하지 않았다고 비판받았으며,[502] 이후 대통령 자문 조직의 멤버들의 사임이 잇따랐고, 16일 트럼프 대통령은 제조업 위원회와 전략 및 정책 포럼 두 개의 자문 조직 해산을 강행했다.[503]
8. 1. 경찰 대응 비판
랠리 이후, 경찰의 소극적인 대응에 대한 비판이 제기되었다.[241] 버지니아 미국 시민 자유 연맹(ACLU)은 경찰이 시위대와 반대 시위대를 분리하지 않았고, 폭력이 발생하기를 수동적으로 지켜봤다고 비판했다.[241] 탐사 보도 기관인 프로퍼블리카는 경찰이 개입하지 않고 백인 우월주의자와 반대 시위대가 물리적으로 싸우는 것을 허용했다고 보도했다.[242]버지니아 관계자들은 경찰의 행동을 옹호했다. 테리 매컬리프 주지사는 경찰이 "훌륭한 임무"를 수행했다고 말했으며, 샬러츠빌 경찰서장 알 토마스는 경찰관들이 시위대와 반대 시위대를 분리하려 했지만, "Right 통합" 참가자들이 이전에 합의된 계획을 따르지 않았다고 말했다.[241][243][244] 토마스는 또한 경찰이 개입하거나 체포하지 말라는 지시를 받았다는 암시를 부인했다.[245]

8월 14일, 트럼프 대통령은 "K.K.K., 네오 나치, 백인 우월주의자 및 기타 증오 단체… 미국인으로서 우리가 소중히 여기는 모든 것에 혐오감을 느낀다"는 성명을 발표하며 백인 우월주의 단체를 비난했지만,[293] 며칠 뒤 다시 "양쪽 모두에 책임이 있다", "양쪽에 매우 훌륭한 사람들이 있었다"라고 발언하여 논란을 재점화시켰다.[326][327]

집회 다음 날인 8월 13일, 여러 단체들이 백인 우월주의에 반대하고 희생자를 추모하는 시위와 집회를 조직했다.[259][260] 브루클린에서는 "평화와 정신" 집회가 열렸고, 공공 옹호관 레티샤 제임스와 시 감사관 스콧 스트링거가 연설했다.[259] 로스앤젤레스에서는 수백 명이 시청 계단에 모여 백인 민족주의 폭력을 규탄하고 희생자를 기렸다.[261] 수천 명의 반트럼프 시위대는 트럼프 타워 주변을 행진하며 "부끄러워, 부끄러워, 부끄러워!"와 "그를 가두어라!"를 외쳤다.[262][263]
8. 4. 남부연합 기념물 철거 가속화
샬러츠빌 폭력 사태는 미국 전역에서 공공 남부 연합 동상 철거를 가속화하는 계기가 되었다.[436] 랠리 직후 몇 주 동안 약 20개의 기념물이 철거되었다.[437] 볼티모어에서는 8월 15일~16일 밤에 도시의 남부 연합 동상 4개가 철거되었다. 캐서린 퓨 시장은 시민의 안전을 위해 밤에 철거를 명령했다고 밝혔다.[438][439] 노스캐롤라이나주 더럼에서는 한 무리의 사람들이 구 더럼 카운티 법원 밖에 있는 동상을 쓰러뜨렸고, 4명의 활동가가 동상 전복과 관련해 체포되었다.[440] 샬러츠빌 폭력 사태 이후 텍사스 대학교 오스틴에서도 남부 연합 동상 3개가 철거되었다.[441]켄터키주 렉싱턴에서는 짐 그레이 시장이 시의회에 법원으로부터 두 개의 동상 이전을 승인해 달라고 요청했다.[442][443] 플로리다주 잭슨빌, 테네시주 멤피스 등 여러 곳에서 남부 연합 기념물 이전을 제안했다.[437]
몬트리올에서는 1957년 남부 연합의 딸들이 허드슨 베이 회사 상점에 설치한 제퍼슨 데이비스의 도시 체류를 기념하는 명판이 집회 이후 많은 불만 제기 후 철거되었다.[444][445]
2021년 7월 10일, 샬러츠빌은 리 장군과 스톤월 잭슨의 동상을 철거했다.[446]
8. 5. 온라인 반응
극우 웹사이트 ''데일리 스토머''는 도메인 등록기관 GoDaddy에 의해 도메인 등록이 취소되었고, 구글 도메인으로 이전했다가 서비스 약관 위반으로 다시 등록이 취소되었다.[265][266][267][268] 페이팔은 증오, 폭력, 인종적 편견을 조장하는 활동에 대한 자금 모금을 금지하는 서비스 약관을 위반했다는 이유로 랠리 조직자 중 일부가 운영하는 극우 단체의 계정을 정지시켰다.[269]해커 활동가 집단 어나니머스는 시위 이후 쿠 클럭스 클랜과 네오 나치 단체와 관련된 수많은 웹사이트를 폐쇄했다.[270] 극우 웹사이트 Red Ice TV도 해킹당했다.[271] 디스코드 서버도 폐쇄되었다.[273]
온라인에서는 백인 민족주의 시위 참가자들의 신상을 공개하는 움직임이 일어났다.[276][277] 랠리 참가자로 식별된 한 개인은 캘리포니아주 버클리의 핫도그 가게에서 직장을 사임했다.[278] 공개적인 망신으로 인해 최소한 한 건의 오인 사례가 발생했다.[281][282]
제2차 세계 대전 당시 미국 전쟁부가 제작한 단편 영화 ''Don't Be a Sucker'' (1943)는 반인종주의 및 반파시스트 주제에 대해 새로운 청중을 찾았다.[283] 이 영화는 바이럴 온라인 비디오로 반복적으로 게시되었다.[284][285]
8. 6. 법적 조치

RAM의 창립자 로버트 룬도는 2018년 10월 기소되었으나 도주했다가 체포되어 미국으로 송환되었다.[456] 2019년 6월, 룬도 등에 대한 혐의는 기각되었으나,[462] 2021년 항소 법원에서 기각 결정이 뒤집혔다.[465] 2023년 1월, 룬도 등에 대한 새로운 기소가 공개되었고,[466] 룬도는 2023년 3월 루마니아에서 체포되어 미국으로 송환되었다.[467]
8. 7. 2018년 기념 집회 (유나이트 더 라이트 2)
2018년 8월 12일, 워싱턴 D.C.에서 '유나이트 더 라이트 2' 집회가 열렸다. 하지만 제이슨 케슬러를 지지하는 참가자는 최대 30명에 불과했고, 집회에 반대하는 반대 시위대는 수천 명에 달했다. 체포된 사람은 몇 명뿐이었고 부상자는 없었으며, 폭우로 인해 군중은 일찍 해산되었다.[480]

2018년 6월, 제이슨 케슬러의 "백인 시민권 집회" 신청이 국립공원관리청으로부터 8월 11일과 12일로 승인되었다.[474] 집회는 워싱턴 D.C.에서 열릴 예정이었다.[475] D.C. Against Hate라는 공동 명칭 아래 18개 활동가 단체 연합은 "집회를 완전히 무산시키기 위해 대규모로 행사에 맞서 시위할" 계획을 세웠다.[476][477]
