2. 역사

나르시시즘이라는 용어는 그리스 신화의 나르키소스 이야기에서 유래했다. 나르키소스는 물에 비친 자신의 모습에 반해 사랑에 빠져 결국 죽음에 이르게 된다.[7]

19세기 말, 해브록 엘리스와 파울 네케는 나르시시즘을 성적 도착의 일종으로 처음 심리학적 용어로 사용했다.[10] 1911년, 오토 랭크는 나르시시즘을 허영심 및 자기 찬미와 연결시킨 최초의 정신분석 논문을 발표했다.[12][10]

지그문트 프로이트는 1914년에 발표한 "나르시시즘에 대하여"라는 에세이를 통해 나르시시즘 이론을 정립했다.[16] 그는 유아기의 성적 발달 단계인 1차적 나르시시즘과, 정신 질환에서 비롯되는 2차적 나르시시즘을 구분했다.[17][18] 1차적 나르시시즘은 자신을 사랑하는 자연스러운 발달 단계이지만, 2차적 나르시시즘은 외부 세계로부터 철회된 리비도가 자아로 향하며 발생한다.

3. 특징

나르시시즘은 자신의 이상화된 자아 이미지와 속성에 대한 허영심이나 이기적인 감탄으로부터 만족을 추구하는 것이다.[90] 이 용어는 나르키소스라는 젊은이가 물웅덩이에 비친 자신의 모습에 반한 그리스 신화에서 유래했다.

정신분석에 따르면 유아기에는 본능이나 관심이 주로 자기 자신에게 쏠려 있으며, 지그문트 프로이트는 이를 1차적 나르시시즘이라고 했다. 성장하면서 애정은 타인에게로 확대되지만, 심각한 배신 등의 경험으로 인해 타인과의 관계가 어려워지면 다시 자기 자신을 사랑하게 된다.

캠벨과 포스터(2007)는 자기통제 전략이 나르시시즘을 이해하는 데 중요하다고 주장했다.[122] 나르시시스트는 긍정적이고 특별하며 성공적이라고 느끼도록 노력하며, 심리적, 대인관계적 형태로 나타난다. 연구에 따르면 나르시시스트는 자기 향상에 있어 비나르시시스트보다 경직성을 보였다.[123]

소로코프스키 외 연구진(2015)은 나르시시즘과 셀카를 SNS에 올리는 빈도 사이에 관련성이 있으며, 남성에게서 더 강하게 나타난다고 밝혔다.[124] 2020년 연구에서는 여성이 남성보다 취약한 나르시시즘에서 높은 점수를 받았지만, 과장된 나르시시즘에서는 성별 차이가 없었다.[125]

3. 1. 자기애성 성격장애 (NPD)

자기애성 성격장애(NPD)는 DSM에 등재된 정식 정신 질환이다.[94][95] 대부분의 사람들이 어느 정도 자기애적 특성을 가지고 있지만, 높은 수준의 자기애는 자신의 능력을 과대평가하고 칭찬과 인정에 대한 과도한 욕구를 가지는 병적인 형태로 나타날 수 있다. NPD는 DSM-5에서 개정되었으며, 인격 장애에 대한 특성 기반의 차원적 관점으로 변화하는 추세가 있다.[96]

자기애성 성격장애는 일반 인구의 약 1%에게서 나타난다.[94][95] 이들은 감정을 느끼는 능력이 제한적일 수 있다.[96]

자기애성 성격장애에 대한 명확한 치료 전략은 아직 없다.[99] Cochrane 협회는 심리 및 의학 치료에 대한 증거 검토를 의뢰했지만, 1년 넘게 진전이 없어 중단되었다.[97][98] 다른 인격 장애 치료에 효과적인 방법이 자기애성 성격장애에는 일반화되지 않는다는 증거도 있다.[100]

  • 과시적, 권위적, 카리스마적, 자기 홍보적인 대인 관계 행동을 보인다.[38]
  • 착취적이고 사리사욕적인 관계를 맺으며, 조작과 사회화의 이점보다 개인적인 이익을 우선시한다.[38]

취약성 나르시시즘 (Vulnerable Narcissism)취약성 나르시시즘은 수줍음, 앙심, 방어적 태도, 낮은 자존감, 불안정한 자기 인식, 타인의 성공에 대한 분노 등의 특징을 보인다.[38] 이러한 특징은 사회적 회피, 수동성, 분노 경향 등의 성향과 관련된다.[38] 취약성 나르시시스트는 다음과 같은 특징을 보인다.

  • 낮고 조건적인 자존감, 불안정하고 불분명한 자기 인식, 타인의 성공에 대한 분노를 느낀다.[38]
  • 수치심, 타인의 의도에 대한 불신, 수용에 대한 우려로 인해 사회적으로 위축된다.[38]
  • 요구가 많고 강박적인 관계를 맺으며, 과도한 칭찬, 승인, 지원을 요구하고, 욕구가 충족되지 않으면 복수심을 느낀다.[38]

기타 표현나르시시즘은 위에서 언급된 두 가지 주요 형태 외에도 다양한 방식으로 표현될 수 있다.

  • 성적 나르시시즘: 성적 능력과 성적 자격에 대한 부풀려진 감각을 수반하는 자기중심적인 성적 행동 패턴이다.[157]

  • 환경적 요인: 프로이트는 부모의 사랑과 태도가 아이의 나르시시즘 형성에 영향을 준다고 보았다.[106] 부모가 자녀의 자질을 과대평가하거나,[106] 반대로 무관심하거나 일관성 없는 양육 태도를 보이면 아이의 자기 욕구가 충족되지 않아 나르시시즘이 발달할 수 있다.

5. 사회문화적 영향

크리스토퍼 라쉬는 저서 "나르시시즘의 문화"에서 나르시시즘 문화를 부의 상징을 획득하려는 쾌락주의적 필요성에 의해 모든 활동과 관계가 정의되는 문화로 규정했다.[143]

5. 1. 한국 사회와 나르시시즘

한국 사회는 전통적으로 집단주의 문화가 강했지만, 개인주의적 가치관이 확산되면서 나르시시즘에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 과도한 경쟁, 학벌주의, 외모 지상주의, 물질 만능주의 등은 한국 사회의 나르시시즘을 심화시키는 요인으로 지적된다. 특히, 젊은 세대를 중심으로 소셜 미디어를 통한 자기 과시, 타인의 인정 욕구, 이른바 '관종'(관심 종자) 문화 등이 확산되고 있다.

6. 논란

이러한 논란은 2010-2013년에 정신 질환 진단 및 통계 편람 제5판(DSM-5, 2013년)의 성격 장애 위원회가 나르시시즘 성격 장애를 삭제할 것을 권고하면서 공개적으로 드러났다. 존 G. 건더슨은 DSM-4의 성격 장애 위원회를 이끌었던 인물로서 가장 날카로운 비판자 중 한 명이었으며, 이에 대해 임상 커뮤니티에서는 3년간 격렬한 논쟁이 벌어졌다.[74]
