2. 역사

세계 무역 센터는 건설, 운영, 테러, 재건의 시기를 거쳤다.

9.11 테러 이후, 건축가와 도시 계획 전문가들은 재건을 위한 아이디어를 논의하기 위해 회의와 포럼을 열었다.[27] 당시 뉴욕 주지사였던 조지 패키는 뉴저지 주지사와 함께 항만청을 관리했기 때문에 부지에 대한 최종 결정을 내릴 권한이 있었다. 그는 부지에 미래의 개발을 원하지 않는 사람들과 새로운 세계 무역 센터를 원했던 래리 실버스타인 사이에서 균형을 잡고자 했다.[31]

2001년 11월, 패키 주지사는 재건 과정을 감독하기 위해 로어 맨해튼 개발 공사(LMDC)를 설립했다.[29] LMDC는 재건 과정에서 연방 지원을 조정하고, 항만청, 래리 실버스타인, 부지 건축가와 협력하며, 지역 사회, 기업, 뉴욕시, 9.11 테러 피해자 유족과의 소통을 처리했다.[30]

2. 1. 건설 (1966년-1973년)

3. 2. 9.11 메모리얼 & 박물관

9·11 테러와 1993년 세계 무역 센터 폭탄 테러 희생자들을 기리는 ''Reflecting Absence'' 기념관이 있다.[136] 이 기념관은 피터 워커와 이스라엘계 미국인 건축가 마이클 아라드가 설계하였으며, 쌍둥이 빌딩이 있던 자리에 조성된 숲과 그 아래의 웅덩이, 희생자들의 이름이 새겨진 벽으로 구성되어 있다. 허드슨강을 막고 있는 슬러리 월은 노출된 상태로 남아 있다.[137] 워커와 아라드는 2004년 1월 세계 무역 센터 부지 기념 경쟁에서 5,000명 이상의 참가자 중 선정되었다.[138]

2004년 10월, LMDC는 게리 파트너스 LLP와 노르웨이 건축 회사 스뇌헤타가 기념관과 같은 지역에 공연 예술 및 박물관 단지를 설계할 것이라고 발표했다.[139][140] 스뇌헤타가 설계한 박물관은[141] 기념 박물관이자 방문객 센터 역할을 할 것이다.[142] 그라운드 제로 박물관 워크숍은 공식 그라운드 제로 기념관이나 게리의 박물관과는 관련이 없는 사립 501(c) 비영리 박물관이다.[143]

기념관은 2011년 9월 11일 테러 10주년에 맞춰 개관했다.[146][147] 박물관은 원래 2012년 9월 11일에 개관할 예정이었으나,[148][149] 재정 문제와[150][151] 허리케인 샌디로 인한 피해로 연기되어[152] 2014년 5월에 개관했다.[153]

3. 3. 교통 시설

세계 무역 센터 교통 허브는 PATH, 뉴욕 지하철, 페리 등 다양한 교통 수단을 연결하는 복합 환승 센터이다.[157] 산티아고 칼라트라바가 설계한 이 허브는 이전 세계 무역 센터역을 대체한다.

교통 허브는 PATH역을 서쪽으로는 WTC 코틀랜드역, 배터리 파크 시티 페리 터미널, 브루클필드 플레이스, 원 월드 트레이드 센터와 연결하고, 동쪽으로는 풀턴 센터를 통해 풀턴 스트리트역과 연결한다. 새로운 역과 9.11 기념관 및 박물관은 허드슨 강에서 물을 운반하는 네 개의 파이프로 공급되는 열교환기를 통해 공기 냉각된다.[158]

3. 4. 기타 시설

웨스트필드 월드 트레이드 센터는 2016년 8월 16일에 개장하였으며, 약 약 33909.61m2의 소매 공간을 갖추고 있어 맨해튼에서 가장 큰 쇼핑몰이다.[154][155] 이 쇼핑몰은 9.11 테러 메모리얼 & 박물관에 필요한 공간 때문에 원래 쇼핑몰 부지의 약 절반 정도에만 걸쳐 있지만, 2층으로 구성되어 있다. 2 및 3 월드 트레이드 센터의 저층부 위에는 3개의 추가 층이 있으며, 4 월드 트레이드 센터는 현재 4개의 지상층을 수용하고 있다. 월드 트레이드 센터 역의 헤드하우스인 오큘러스에도 많은 소매 공간이 있다.[156]

4. 논란

세계 무역 센터가 파괴된 후 그라운드 제로의 미래에 대한 많은 논쟁이 있었다. 부지 소유권 및 건설 계획에 대한 불일치와 논란으로 인해 수년간 건설이 지연되었다. 매리스트 칼리지의 여론 조사에 따르면 많은 사람들이 9/11 이전처럼 세계 무역 센터를 재건하기를 원했다.[52] 트윈 타워 II라는 프로젝트는 트윈 타워 얼라이언스라는 비공식 단체의 주도로 원래 타워보다 더 높게 재건하는 것을 목표로 했다.[53] 반면, 부지에 아무것도 건설하지 않거나 전체를 기념관으로 만들자는 의견도 있었다. 최종적으로 원래 트윈 타워 자리에 기념관과 박물관을 짓고 그 주변에 6개의 새로운 마천루를 건설하는 마스터 플랜이 합의되었다.[54]
