2. 배경

라스알아인 전투 이후, 이 도시는 아랍인이 통제하는 서부와 쿠르드족이 통제하는 동부로 분할되었다.[73] 2011년 시리아 내전 발발 이후, 쿠르드족은 시리아 북동부 지역에서 자치권을 확대하며 인민 수호 부대(YPG)를 중심으로 한 군사력을 강화했다. 2013년 7월 16일, 알누스라 전선이 여성 방어 부대(YPJ) 순찰대를 공격하자, YPG는 알데르바시야에서, 알누스라는 며칠 전에 200명의 전투원을 증원군으로 보냈다.[74]

2. 1. 쿠르드족의 부상과 자치 선언

2013년 11월 2일, 쿠르드군은 라스 알-아인 주변 지역에서 지하디스트 세력을 몰아내고 하사카 주의 통제권을 공고히 하기 위해 "세레케니예 순교자 공세"라는 작전을 시작했다.[94]

11월 6일, 하사카 주에서 YPG는 IS, 자바트 알-누스라 및 동맹 반군과의 교전 끝에 알레포로 가는 고속도로상의 텔 타메르 서쪽에 위치한 아시리아인 거주 마을 게베쉬와 탈 셰마린을 점령했다.[95] 이 시점에서 YPG군은 공세 동안 총 40개의 읍과 마을을 점령했다.[96]

11월 28일, 알-하사카 주에서 YPG 전사들은 IS, 알-누스라 및 여러 반군 대대와의 격렬한 교전 끝에 텔 타메르-하사카 도로에 위치한 세 마을(로코바, 아'와자, 탈 마가스)을 점령했다.[98]

3. 군사적 충돌

2013년 라스알아인 전투 이후, 알누스라 전선과 인민 수호 부대(YPG) 간의 충돌이 발생했다. YPG는 알누스라 전선을 라스 알 아인 마을에서 몰아내고 터키와의 국경 검문소를 장악했다.[77][78] 2013년 7월 말, IS와 알 누스라는 텔 아비야드 국경 도시에서 YPG를 몰아냈다.[84]

2014년, IS는 코바니를 포위하고 대규모 공세를 시작, 코바니 주변의 여러 마을을 점령하며 도시를 포위했다.[85] 이라크 쿠르드 자치구의 페쉬메르가 부대가 코바니 방어를 지원했다.[137][138]

2015년, YPG와 시리아 민주군(SDF)은 알-하울을 점령하고 IS로부터 200개 이상의 마을과 도시를 점령했으며,[139] 티슈린 댐과 주변 마을도 점령했다.

2016년, 시리아 민주군(SDF)은 미국 주도 연합군의 공습 지원을 받아 IS로부터 알-샤다디[2]와 만비지[3]를 점령하기 위한 공세를 시작했다.

3. 1. 2013년: 초기 충돌과 쿠르드족의 우세

19일, YPG는 탈 아'로 마을을 점령했다.[81] 카르호크와 아'리 아가에서는 여전히 전투가 계속되었다.[82] 다음 날, 쿠르드 전사들은 분쟁 중인 마을 근처의 알 누스라 검문소를 점령했다. 이때까지 전투에서 35명의 지하디스트와 19명의 YPG 전사가 사망했다.[83]

2013년 7월 말, IS와 알 누스라는 일주일간의 전투 끝에 자브하트 알 아크라드와 YPG를 텔 아비야드 국경 도시에서 몰아냈고, 이로 인해 수천 명의 쿠르드 민간인이 이재민이 되었다.[84]

3. 2. 2014년: IS의 공세와 코바니 포위전

2014년, IS는 코바니를 포위하고 대규모 공세를 시작했다. 10월 1일, IS는 YPG 본부가 위치한 코바니(아인 알-아랍) 포위 공격 개시를 선언했다.[85]

9월 17일, 유프라테스강 위의 전략적 교량을 점령한 후, IS는 탱크, 로켓, 포병을 동원하여 코바니 방향으로 대규모 공세를 시작했고, 24시간 안에 쿠르드족 마을 21곳을 점령했다. 이로 인해 코바니는 IS군에 포위되었다. 9월 19일, IS는 39개의 마을을 추가로 점령하여 코바니에서 20km 이내로 진입했다. 4만 5천 명의 난민이 이 지역이 IS의 일부가 될 것을 우려하여 터키로 넘어갔으나, 일부 난민은 국경에서 저지당하고 터키 당국에 의해 코바니로 돌아가라는 명령을 받았다. 9월 21일, IS는 64개의 마을을 점령하여 병력이 도시에서 10km 이내로 접근했으며, 계속 진격했다. 전투는 코바니 남부와 동부 교외, 도시에서 13km 떨어진 곳에 집중되었다.

7월 4일, IS는 이라크에서 노획한 무기를 사용하여 YPG 부대와의 3일간의 교전 끝에 코바니 시 근처의 조르 마가르, 알-지야라, 바야디야 마을을 점령했다.[122] 7월 9일, IS는 동쪽에서 코바니를 향해 진격하여 YPG가 압디, 크위, 켄달, 크리, 소르 마을에서 철수하게 만들었다.[123] 이 충돌로 18명의 쿠르드족 전사가 사망했다.[124] 7월 14일, PYD는 코바니 방어를 지원하기 위해 모든 쿠르드족에게 지역 동원령을 발령했다. 3. 3. 2015년: YPG의 반격과 영토 확장

2015년 11월, YPG와 그 동맹군인 시리아 민주군은 알-하울을 점령했고, 한 달 간의 공세에서 이라크 국경 근처 알-하사카 주의 주변 지역에서 IS로부터 200개 이상의 마을과 도시를 점령했다.[139]

3. 4. 2016년: 시리아 민주군(SDF) 결성과 연합 작전

2016년 2월, 러시아와 시리아 공군의 지원을 받은 시리아 정부군 및 동맹 민병대가 북부 알레포 지역 점령을 위한 공세를 시작했다. YPG가 주도하는 시리아 민주군(SDF)은 이들의 진격을 따라 텔 리파아트와 메나그 군 비행장을 점령했다.[1]

3. 5. 터키의 군사 개입 (2015년-현재)
