2. 역사

GE 빌딩은 1933년 미국 대형 음향·전기 메이커 RCA에 의해 록펠러 센터의 한 구획에 "RCA 빌딩"으로 준공되었다. 1986년 제너럴 일렉트릭(GE)이 RCA를 M&A(기업 인수)하면서 1988년에 "GE 빌딩"으로 이름이 변경되었고, 2015년 7월 1일 건물 최상단 로고 교체와 함께 "컴캐스트 빌딩"으로 최종 변경되었다.

건물은 아르데코 양식으로 설계되었으며, 외관은 석회암과 화강암으로 마감되었다. 정문에는 리 로리가 디자인한 조각 그룹 '지혜, 구름 속의 목소리'가 있으며, "지혜와 지식은 너의 시대의 안정이 될 것이다"라는 이사야서 33:6에서 인용된 글귀가 새겨져 있다.

1932년 3월 RCA 빌딩의 철골 구조 작업이 시작되었고, 같은 해 9월에는 69층 건설 중 ''Lunch atop a Skyscraper'' 사진이 촬영되었다. 이는 RCA 빌딩 홍보를 위한 선전이었다.

2. 1. 부지

30 록펠러 플라자는 뉴욕 미드타운 맨해튼에 위치한 록펠러 센터 단지의 일부이다.[3][4] 이 건물은 물리적으로나 상징적으로나 록펠러 센터의 중심 구조물로 의도되었다.[5] 이 부지는 이전에 컬럼비아 대학교의 일부였으며,[10] 컬럼비아 대학교는 단지가 건설된 후에도 대부분의 토지에 대한 소유권을 유지했다.[11]

토지 구획은 거의 직사각형이며 107766ft2 면적을 차지하며, 서쪽으로 6번가(공식적으로 아메리카 대로[6]), 북쪽으로 50번가, 동쪽으로 록펠러 플라자, 남쪽으로 49번가에 접해 있다. 이 부지는 49번가와 50번가에 약 166.12m의 전면을, 6번가에 약 53.48m의 전면을 가지고 있다.[3]

30 록펠러 플라자 북서쪽 모서리인 6번가와 50번가 부지를 점유하고 있던 다른 임차인은 오해로 인해 매각 제안을 받지 못했다. 식료품점 주인 존 F. 맥스웰은 50번가에 있는 자신의 부동산을 100만 달러에 팔려고 했다. 오해로 인해, 로커펠러 가문은 맥스웰이 절대 팔지 않을 것이라고 들었고, 맥스웰 자신은 로커펠러에게 접근받은 적이 없다고 말했다. 결과적으로 맥스웰은 1962년 사망할 때까지 자신의 부동산을 소유했고, 그의 사망 이후 컬럼비아가 이 건물을 구입했다.[15] 록펠러 센터는 1970년에 맥스웰 가문의 임대 계약을 구매했다.

2. 2. 건축 및 설계

30 록펠러 플라자는 코벳, 해리슨 & 맥머레이, 후드, 고들리 & 푸이호, 라인하르트 & 호프마이스터로 구성된 로커펠러 센터의 연합 건축가들이 설계했으며, 레이먼드 후드가 이 복합 단지의 수석 건축가였다. 연합 건축가들은 록펠러 센터의 모든 건물을 아르데코 양식으로 설계했다.[5][19] 30 록펠러 플라자는 크라이슬러 빌딩, 70 파인 스트리트, 40 월 스트리트 등 첨탑을 사용하여 최대 높이에 도달한 당시 뉴욕 시의 다른 마천루와 달리 평평한 지붕으로 솟아 있다.[17]

건물 외관은 석회암과 화강암으로 마감되었으며, 알루미늄 스팬드럴 패널이 사용되었다. 30 록펠러 플라자의 정문은 세 개의 아치로 된 로지아로 설계되었다. 중앙에 하나가 있고, 높이 약 11.28m 너비 약 4.27m이고, 양쪽에 두 개가 있으며, 높이 약 8.23m 너비 약 3.96m이다.[27][28] 리 로리는 세 개의 아치 상인방에 조각 그룹 ''지혜, 구름 속의 목소리''를 디자인했다.[27][28] 중앙 아치 위에는 로리의 조각품 ''지혜''가 있으며, 왼쪽에는 ''소리'', 오른쪽에는 ''빛''이 있다.

입구 위의 ''지혜'' 프리즈에는 "지혜와 지식은 너의 시대의 안정이 될 것이다"라는 글귀가 새겨져 있으며, 이는 이사야서 33:6(KJV)에서 인용되었다. 조각 그룹에는 레옹 빅토르 솔론이 제작한 다색 장식이 함께 제공된다. 로리의 세 가지 렌더링은 레오 프리들랜더의 두 개의 석회암 부조로 보완된다. 북쪽 고도에는 생산, 남쪽 고도에는 라디오가 있다.

30 록펠러 플라자의 부속 건물인 1230 애비뉴 오브 아메리카스에는 마퀴[234]와 외부에 두 점의 예술 작품이 있다. 움푹 들어간 입구 포털은 배리 포크너의 79by 모자이크 벽화 ''인류를 깨우는 지성''으로 채워져 있다.[29] 포털 위에는 가스통 라셰즈의 11.5by 석회암 패널 4개가 있으며, 각 패널은 원래 라디오 시티 단지와 관련된 문명의 한 측면을 나타낸다.[30]

2. 3. 개발

록펠러 센터는 1932년부터 1940년 사이에 존 D. 록펠러 2세가 컬럼비아 대학교로부터 임대한 부지에 건설되었다.[106][107][108] 원래 이 부지에는 메트로폴리탄 오페라를 위한 새로운 오페라 하우스가 들어설 예정이었다.[109] 1928년 벤자민 위스타 모리스와 디자이너 조셉 어번이 오페라 하우스 설계를 위해 고용되었으나,[110] 재정 문제로 1929년 12월에 취소되었다. 이후 링컨 센터에 새로운 오페라 하우스가 건설되어 1966년에 개장했다.[110]

임대 계약은 유효했기에, 록펠러는 컬럼비아 부지를 수익성 있게 만들기 위해 새로운 계획을 세워야 했다. 레이몬드 후드는 미국 라디오 회사(RCA)와 그 자회사인 전국 방송 회사(NBC), 라디오-키스-오페움(RKO)와 협상하여 대중 매체 엔터테인먼트 단지를 건설하는 아이디어를 냈다.[110] 1930년 5월, RCA와 계열사들은 록펠러 센터 관리자와 계약을 체결, 1000000ft2의 스튜디오 공간 임대, 개발 서쪽 부분 명명권, 연간 4250000USD 비용으로 4개의 극장 개발을 약속했다.[110] 30 록펠러 플라자 고층 빌딩은 1930년 3월 설계 초안에서 처음 제안되었고,[111] 1931년 3월에 현재 치수가 확정되었다.[112] 이 빌딩은 계약에 따라 RCA의 이름을 따 1932년 5월에 공식화되었다.[113]

1931년 8월, 라디오 시티 뮤직 홀과 RCA 빌딩 설계가 뉴욕 시 건물 관리국에 제출되었고, 두 건물 모두 1932년 개장 예정이었다.[114] 1932년 3월, RCA 빌딩 철골 구조 작업이 시작되었다.[106] 리 로리는 1932년 6월 RCA 빌딩 동쪽 입구를 디자인했고, 건물 앞 텅 빈 광장도 발표되었다.[27][28] 같은 해 7월, 배리 포크너는 6번가 쪽 서쪽 입구에 큰 유리 모자이크 제작을, 9월에는 가스통 라셰즈가 6번가 입구 부조 제작을 위촉받았다.[29][30] 후드와 존 토드는 로비 예술가 5명을 인터뷰하기 위해 유럽으로 갔다.[114] 프랭크 브랭윈, 호세프 마리아 세르, 디에고 리베라가 고용되었으나,[115] 존 D. 록펠러 주니어는 공산주의자 리베라 고용을 망설였다.[115] 앙리 마티스는 로비 벽화를 거절했고, 파블로 피카소는 만남조차 거부했다.[115]

1932년 7월, 외부 석조 공사와 창문 설치가 시작되었다.[116][21] 구조용 강철은 9월 16일까지 64층까지 올라갔다.[117][31] 1932년 9월 20일, 69층 건설 중 ''Lunch atop a Skyscraper'' 사진이 촬영되었다.[118][119] 이는 RCA 빌딩 홍보를 위한 선전이었다.[120] 1932년 9월 26일, 건물 완공과 함께 주요 66층 타워 꼭대기에 미국 국기가 게양되었다. 록펠러 플라자 구역 15층까지 석회암 클래딩이 세워졌고, 6번가 구역 외관은 완성되었다.[116] 뉴욕 주 공장에서 제작된 돌은 크레인으로 지상에서 약 21.34m 높이 호이스트로 올려진 후 상층으로 옮겨졌다.[24] 1932년 12월 7일, 주요 타워 석조 공사가 완료되었다.[24][121] 엘리베이터가 55층까지만 운행되어 기념 행사는 열리지 않았다.[121] 약 6003171.48L3 석조 공사 설치에 102일이 소요되었다.[24]

1933년 1월, 록펠러 플라자는 시 공식 거리 지도에 추가되었고, RCA 빌딩은 30 록펠러 플라자 주소를 받았다.[7] 2월, 존 D. 록펠러 3세는 RCA 빌딩 기술자 27명을 표창했다.[122][123] ''뉴욕 타임스''는 1,600명이 내부 작업을 하고 있다고 보도했다. 노동자, 석고공, 금속 라더는 25,000일의 8시간 작업일에 해당하는 보상을 받아야 했다. 건물에는 약 24403276.50kg의 석고 작업(650yd2)이 필요했다.[124] 1933년 4월 6일, 1,400명이 작업하며 건물은 90% 완공되었다. 상층은 대부분 완성되었지만 기저부는 미완성이었다.[125] 4월 24일, 1,000명 이상이 RCA 빌딩을 마무리하고 있었다.[126][127] 대공황으로 건축 비용은 예상보다 저렴했다. RCA 빌딩 포함 처음 10개 건물 최종 비용은 1.02억달러였다.[127]

2. 4. 준공 및 초기

1933년, RCA에 의해 록펠러 센터의 한 구획에 "RCA 빌딩"으로 준공되었다.[126][127] RCA 사무실은 1933년 6월 RCA 빌딩의 52층과 53층으로 이전했다.[132] 록펠러 가문은 잠재적 임차인들에게 점유의 인상을 주기 위해 건물 전체에 걸쳐 공간을 차지했다.[133]

NBC는 RCA 빌딩의 첫 번째 입주자 중 하나였으며, 기지에 35개의 스튜디오가 들어서 있어 가장 큰 입주자 중 하나였다. 웨스팅하우스는 RCA 빌딩의 14층부터 17층까지 이전했으며,[136] 그 결과 건물의 엘리베이터 계약을 받았다.[137] 아메리칸 시아나미드는 4개 층과 다른 일부를 차지했다.[138][139]

건물 상부에는 전망대 '톱 오브 더 록'과 레스토랑 '레인보우 룸'이 개장했다. 1933년 7월, 관리자들은 RCA 빌딩 꼭대기에 전망대를 열었는데, 67층, 69층, 70층에 190by의 테라스로 구성되었다.[151] 레인보우 룸은 1934년 10월 3일에 개장했다.[74]

2. 5. 1940년대~1970년대

제2차 세계 대전 중, 영국 정보부의 영국 보안 조정부는 이 건물 3603호실에 미국 작전 본부를 두었으며, 윌리엄 스티븐슨이 조직했다.[165] 이곳은 또한 앨런 덜레스의 사무실로도 사용되었는데, 그는 나중에 CIA를 이끌게 된다.[165]

1960년, 건물이 국립 기상청 본부가 되면서 기상 레이더 안테나가 옥상에 설치되었다.[87][88] 트라이 스테이트 지역 대부분을 관할하는 NOAA 기상 라디오 방송국인 KWO35는 건물 옥상에서 송출되었으며 2014년까지 그곳에 위치해 있었다.[89] 기상 레이더 방송국은 WNBC-TV의 지역 뉴스 방송에서 ''도플러 4000''으로 사용되었다.[91]

1969년, 베트남 전쟁 반대 폭탄 테러가 19층에서 발생하여 상당한 피해를 입었지만, 다행히 인명 피해는 없었다.[178][179]

2. 6. 1980년대~1990년대

1986년 제너럴 일렉트릭(GE)이 RCA를 M&A(기업 인수)함에 따라 1988년에 "GE 빌딩"으로 이름이 변경되었다.[205] 570 렉싱턴 애비뉴에 있는 제너럴 일렉트릭 빌딩과의 혼동을 우려했음에도 불구하고 건물 상단의 간판도 변경되었다.[206]

1985년, 뉴욕시 랜드마크 보존 위원회(LPC)는 건물 외부와 로비 내부를 랜드마크로 지정했다.[194] 1987년에는 록펠러 센터의 원래 건물들이 국립 역사 랜드마크로 지정되었다.[190]

2. 7. 2000년대 이후

2000년대 후반 동안, GE 빌딩은 85%의 점유율을 유지했다.[137] 2000년 12월, 데이비드 록펠러의 오랜 친구 제리 스페이어와 시카고의 레스터 크라운 가문이 이끄는 티시먼 스페이어는 GE 빌딩을 포함한 14개의 기존 건물과 부지를 18.5억달러에 매입했다.[213] 2001년, 티시먼 스페이어는 옥상 전망대 리모델링을 계획하기 시작했고, 이는 '탑 오브 더 락'(Top of the Rock)으로 브랜드가 변경될 예정이었다.[95] 코스토 그린우드 건축사도 NBC 스튜디오 리모델링 설계를 시작했다.[221] 2003년 11월에 전망대 계획이 공개적으로 발표되었고,[222] 2005년 11월에 가벨리니 셰퍼드 어소시에이츠가 리모델링을 거쳐 재개장했다.[223][97]

WNBC-TV 뉴스룸은 2008년에 리모델링되었고,[224] NBC는 같은 해 초에 24시간 뉴스 채널을 시작할 것이라고 발표했다.[225] 2009년에는 티시먼 스페이어가 에버그린 건축 예술을 고용하여 로비를 복원했고, 2년간의 복원 작업이 시작되었다.[45] 같은 해, 레인보우 룸은 록펠러 센터가 치프리아니의 임대 계약을 종료한 후 문을 닫았다.[226] 2012년, 뉴욕시 역사 건축물 보존 위원회(LPC)는 레인보우 룸을 내부 랜드마크로 지정했다.[227]

2014년 6월, 뉴욕시 역사 건축물 보존 위원회(LPC)는 컴캐스트에게 30 록펠러 플라자를 변경할 수 있는 권한을 부여했다.[232][233] 컴캐스트는 건물의 이름을 변경하고 옥상의 간판을 교체할 계획이었다.[232][180] 또한, '지미 팰런의 투나잇 쇼'(The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon)를 광고하는 새로운 간판이 6번가 입구에 추가되었다.[232][234] GE 간판은 2014년 9월부터 철거되었고,[230] 30 록펠러 플라자는 2015년 7월 1일 공식적으로 컴캐스트 빌딩으로 개명되었다.[235]

2019년에는 대한민국 국적 항공사인 아시아나항공이 건물에 입주하면서 재미 한인 사회와의 관계가 강화되었다.

2022년 4월, LPC는 탑 오브 더 락에 추가 방문객 시설을 설치하려는 티시먼 스페이어의 제안을 승인했다.[104][105] 시설 중 하나인 '빔'(Beam)은 2023년 12월에 개장했고,[100][101] 스카이리프트 놀이기구는 2024년 10월에 개장했다.[102][103] 그 해 12월, 티시먼 스페이어는 건물의 49번가와 50번가 입구에 있는 네온 간판을 LED 간판으로 교체하기 위해 LPC의 허가를 요청했다.[238][239]

톱 오브 더 록(Top of the Rock)은 GE 빌딩 최상부에 설치된 전망대이다. 1986년에 폐쇄되었다가 2005년에 고속 엘리베이터 설치 및 로비 재구축 등 시설을 개선하여 재개장했다.[259] 68층, 69층, 70층으로 구성되어 있으며, 입장권(25USD)을 구매하여 관람할 수 있다. 69층에는 기념품 가게가 있다.

엠파이어 스테이트 빌딩보다 고도가 낮지만, 톱 오브 더 록의 옥상은 높은 울타리나 유리 등 안전 설비가 없어 가리는 것 없이 전망을 즐길 수 있다는 장점이 있다.

5. 레인보우 룸

레인보우 룸 레스토랑


GE 빌딩의 65층은 레인보우 룸(Rainbow Room)이라는 이름의 행사 공간이자 레스토랑이다.[73] 이 공간은 Associated Architects의 월러스 K. 해리슨(Wallace K. Harrison)이 디자인했다. 실내 디자이너 엘레나 바흐만 슈미트(Elena Bachman Schmidt)는 엘시 드 울프(Elsie de Wolfe)의 제자였으며, 가구, 커튼, 엘리베이터 문 등 실내 장식 디자인에 기여했다. 빈센트 미넬리(Vincente Minnelli)는 슈미트가 벽의 색상을 선택하는 것을 도왔다.[73] 이 레스토랑은 1934년에 문을 열었으며,[74] 수십 년 동안 미국에서 가장 높은 레스토랑이었지만, 1940년대 대부분 동안 문을 닫았다.[73] 가장 최근 버전의 레스토랑은 Gabellini Sheppard Associates의 복원 공사를 거쳐 2014년에 다시 문을 열었다.[75]
