2007년, 리버풀 자치구 설립 800주년을 기념하는 행사가 열렸다. 2008년에는 노르웨이의 스타방에르와 함께 유럽 문화 수도로 지정되었다. 축하 행사에는 거대한 기계 거미 라 프린세스가 포함되었는데, 이는 리버풀의 "여덟 개의 다리"를 상징한다.[70][71][72]

3. 지리
리버풀은 도시 지위를 가진 광역 자치구로, 지방 정부 관점에서 머지사이드 주와 리버풀 시티 지역에 모두 위치한다. 이러한 지리적 영역은 각기 다른 수준의 지방 자치가 적용되는 행정 구역으로 간주된다.
