솜다리속
1. 개요
솜다리속은 유라시아 대륙과 남아메리카 안데스 산맥의 고산 지대에 널리 분포하는 국화과 식물 속이다. 솜다리속 식물은 흰 꽃차례를 특징으로 하며, 대표적으로 알프스 산맥의 솜다리와 오스트리아와 스위스의 국화인 에델바이스가 있다. 솜다리속에는 솜다리풀, 솜다리, 서양 솜다리 등 다양한 종이 있으며, 뮤지컬 사운드 오브 뮤직에 등장하는 에델바이스는 오스트리아의 국가적 상징으로 여겨진다.

2. 분포
유라시아 대륙의 중위도 산악 지대에 널리 분포하며, 남아메리카 안데스 산맥에도 자생한다. 특히 알프스 산맥이나 피레네 산맥에 자생하는 솜다리는 뮤지컬 사운드 오브 뮤직의 삽입곡으로 인해 고산 식물의 대표적인 존재로 알려져 있다. Edelweiß독일어는 "고귀한 흰색"이라는 의미이다. 오스트리아와 스위스의 국화로도 유명하다.
일본에는 홋카이도에서 주부 산악 지대에 걸쳐 5종과 2변종이 분포한다. 주로 고산 지대에 자생하지만, 저산에서 아고산대에 걸쳐 분포하는 종류도 있다.
3. 특징
이름에서 알 수 있듯이, 얇게 눈을 덮은 듯한 흰 꽃을 피운다. 하지만 실제 꽃은 매우 작으며, 꽃처럼 보이는 것은 꽃차례 주위를 장식하는 포엽이라고 불리는 잎으로, 그 표면에 흰 솜털이 밀생하여 마치 눈을 덮은 것처럼 보인다.
개화기는 6월부터 8월이다.
