2. 역사

2015년 1월, 메르세데스-벤츠(Mercedes-Benz) USA는 본사를 버겐 카운티 몬트베일에서 조지아주 애틀랜타(Atlanta, Georgia) 지역으로 7월부터 이전할 것이라고 발표했다. 이 회사는 1972년부터 뉴저지 북부에 본사를 두고 있으며 몬트베일에 1,000명의 직원을 두고 있었다. 메르세데스-벤츠는 버겐 카운티에 남도록 뉴저지 주정부의 인센티브 제안에도 불구하고, 알라바마 제조 시설과의 근접성, 미국 남동부의 증가하는 고객 기반과 더불어 조지아 정부 기관으로부터 최대 5천만 달러의 세금 인센티브를 받게 된 점을 들어 이전을 결정했다고 밝혔다. 그러나 메르세데스-벤츠 USA는 또한 몬트베일에 북동부 지역 본사를 유지하고 이 지역에 "최첨단" 조립 훈련 센터를 건설할 의향이 있다고 밝혔다.[296]

아메리칸 드림(American Dream)은 가든 스테이트 플라자에서 남쪽으로 약 13km 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있으며, 이스트 러더퍼드의 메도우랜즈 스포츠 콤플렉스에 위치한 또 다른 대규모 소매 및 엔터테인먼트 단지이다.[307] 네 단계의 개장 중 첫 번째와 두 번째 단계는 2019년 10월 25일과 2019년 12월 5일에 진행되었다.[308][309] 나머지 개장 단계는 2020년 10월 1일과 그 이후에 진행되었다.[310] 2023년 1월 현재, 이 대형 쇼핑몰에는 200개 이상의 상점과 기타 상업 시설이 입점해 있다.

6. 1. 블루 로 (Blue Laws)

버건군은 음식과 휘발유를 제외한 대부분의 소매 판매를 규제하는 블루법을 시행하고 있다.[311] 이 법은 각 카운티가 유권자 국민투표를 통해 거부할 수 있는 주 법률이며, 주 21개 카운티 중 20개가 이 법을 시행하는 것을 거부했지만, 버건군은 블루법을 유지하고 있다.[311] 뉴욕 대도시권[312]의 가장 크고 인기 있는 상업 쇼핑 중심지 중 하나는 일요일에 거의 완전히 문을 닫는다. 식료품점, 편의점, 주유소, 호텔, 식당, 약국, 유흥 시설, 의류, 신발, 가구, 전자 제품, 하드웨어 및 가전 제품을 판매하지 않는 기타 면제된 사업체는 운영이 허용된다.

버건군에는 유대인 (2000년 추정 83,700명)과 무슬림 (2000년 추정 6,473명)의 상당한 인구가 있으며,[313] 이들은 대부분의 기독교인과 달리 일요일 안식일을 기념하지 않는다.[313] 정통 유대교 소수는 일요일 (블루법 때문에) 또는 토요일 (종교적 준수 때문에)에 쇼핑을 할 수 없는 상황에 놓여 있다.[314][315]

하지만 유권자들이 이 법을 폐지하려는 시도는 반복적으로 실패했다. 이 법을 유지하는 주요 이유 중 하나는 많은 버건군 주민들이 일주일에 하루의 상대적인 평온함과 교통 체증 감소를 원하기 때문이다.[316] 이러한 상대적 평화를 원하는 것은 버건군에서 가장 큰 쇼핑몰 대부분이 위치한 4번 국도와 17번 국도가 교차하는 파라머스에서 가장 분명하게 나타난다. 파라머스는 버건군에서 시행하는 것보다 훨씬 더 제한적인 자체 블루법을 제정하여[317] 사무실 건물에서 화이트칼라 노동자를 포함하여 일요일에 모든 형태의 "세속적인 고용"을 금지했다.[316] 파라머스 (07652)는 연간 소매 판매액이 60억 달러 이상을 기록하며 미국 최고의 소매 우편번호가 되었다.[318] 파라머스의 지역 블루법은 1957년, 버건 몰 (이후 버건 타운 센터 아울렛으로 개명)과 가든 스테이트 플라자가 건설 중일 때 처음 제안되었다.[319] 2012년 11월, 크리스 크리스티 주지사는 허리케인 샌디의 영향으로 블루법을 일시적으로 중단하는 행정 명령을 내렸다.[320] 블루법은 11월 11일에 중단되었지만 1주일 후 다시 시행되었다.[321]

7. 교통

조지 워싱턴 다리는 포트리에서 허드슨강을 건너 뉴욕시로 연결되며, 세계에서 가장 붐비는 자동차 다리이다.[183][184] 운전자들은 링컨 터널과 홀랜드 터널(허드슨 카운티)을 통해 뉴욕시에 접근할 수 있으며, 뉴욕주 웨스트체스터 카운티로 가는 허드슨강 횡단은 인접한 록랜드 카운티의 태판 지 다리를 이용하여 이용할 수 있다.

조지 워싱턴 다리는 포트리에서 버건군을 지나 허드슨강을 건너 뉴욕시로 연결된다.


NJ 트랜짓은 버건 카운티 선, 메인 선, 파스카크 밸리 선을 통해 철도 서비스를 제공한다.[189][190] 이 노선들은 호보켄 터미널까지 운행하며, PATH 열차와 연결된다. 또한, NJ 트랜짓은 뉴욕 펜 스테이션과 뉴어크 펜 스테이션까지 세커커스 정션에서 연결 서비스를 제공한다. 호보켄 터미널에서는 허드슨-버건 경전철과 뉴욕 워터웨이 페리를 이용하여 월드 파이낸셜 센터 및 기타 목적지로 이동할 수 있다.

NJ 트랜짓과 Academy Bus Lines, Coach USA와 같은 민간 회사는 버건군 내, 뉴저지주 다른 지역, 그리고 뉴욕시의 포트 오소리티 버스 터미널 및 조지 워싱턴 다리 버스 터미널까지 지역 및 급행 버스 서비스를 제공한다.

버건군에는 뉴욕-뉴저지 항만청에서 운영하는 테터보로 공항(테터보로)이 있다.[201] JFK 국제공항, 뉴어크 리버티 국제공항, 라과디아 공항 등 뉴욕시 대도시권에서 가장 붐비는 세 개의 상업 공항은 모두 버건군에서 25마일 이내에 위치해 있다.

8. 교육

버건 카운티에는 버건 커뮤니티 칼리지(파라무스, 해켄색, 린드허스트)[202], 이스트윅 칼리지(램지, 해켄색)[203], 페어리 디킨슨 대학교(티넥, 해켄색)[204], 펠리시안 대학교(로디, 러더퍼드)[205], 라마포 칼리지(마와)[206] 등 여러 대학이 있다. 세인트 피터스 대학교(Saint Peter's University)는 잉글우드 클리프스에 캠퍼스를 운영했었으며, 1975년부터 2018년 8월 공식 폐쇄될 때까지 운영되었다.[207] 버클리 칼리지(Berkeley College)는 파라무스에 캠퍼스를 운영했지만, 2022년 봄에 폐쇄하고 패세익 카운티(Passaic County)의 우드랜드 파크에 있는 대학 캠퍼스로 통합할 것이라고 발표했다.

버건 카운티에는 45개의 공립 고등학교와 최소 23개의 사립 고등학교가 있다. ''뉴저지 먼슬리'' 잡지의 2014년 순위에 따르면 뉴저지 339개 학교 중 상위 10위 안에 드는 3개의 시립 고등학교가 버겐 카운티에 있었는데, 앨런데일의 노던 하이랜드 지역 고등학교 (#3), 몬트베일의 파스카크 힐스 고등학교 (#7), 글렌 록의 글렌 록 고등학교 (#8)가 포함되었다. 잡지 목록에는 해켄색에 있는 카운티의 공립 영재 고등학교인 버겐 카운티 아카데미가 포함되지 않았는데, 이 학교는 미국의 최고의 고등학교 중 하나로 계속 인정받고 있다. 2014년 BCA는 평균 HSPA 점수 294점(300점 만점)과 평균 SAT 점수 2103점(2400점 만점)을 받았다.

버건 카운티에는 버건 공연 예술 센터(PAC)[227], 뉴저지 해군 박물관[219], 버건 미술관 & 과학관[221] 등 다양한 문화 시설이 있다. 뉴저지 해군 박물관에는 USS ''링''이 해켄색 강에 정박해 있으며, 박물관 선박으로 관광이 가능하다.[219] 2014년 9월에는 노던 뉴저지 커뮤니티 재단이 버겐 카운티 내 예술가와 예술 단체를 연결하는 ArtsBergen이라는 이니셔티브를 발표했다.[216]

라마포 산 주립 삼림 공원, 팰리세이즈 주립 공원, 반 사운 카운티 공원 등 다양한 공원과 자연 보호 구역에서 하이킹, 캠핑, 스포츠 등 야외 활동을 즐길 수 있다. 반 사운 카운티 공원에는 버건 카운티의 유일한 동물원인 동물원이 있으며, 2016년에는 동물원의 면적을 확장하고 동물 종의 개체수를 다양화할 계획이었다.[332]

19세기 말 수십 년 동안 버건군은 주에서 다른 어떤 군보다 훨씬 더 읍을 구로 나누기 시작했다. 이는 주로 주법의 허점을 이용하여 자치구가 세금을 낮게 부과하고 더 많은 구성원을 카운티의 자유 보유자 위원회에 보낼 수 있도록 허용한 "구(boroughitis)" 현상 때문이었다. 버건군의 많은 읍이 오늘날 존재하는 여러 구의 패치워크로 사라진 10년의 기간이 있었고, 그 전에 자치구 설립을 규율하는 주법이 변경되었다.[32]
