2. 역사

블록버스터는 1985년 데이비드 쿡이 설립했다. 쿡은 이전의 석유 및 가스 사업 실패 후, 아내의 제안으로 비디오 대여 사업을 시작했다. 당시 VHS는 가정용 비디오 표준이었고, 비디오 대여업은 성장세였다. 쿡은 댈러스에 첫 매장을 열고 '블록버스터'라는 상표를 사용했다.

1985년 첫 블록버스터 매장은 8,000개의 VHS와 2,000개의 베타 테이프를 제공하며 시작했다. 1호점 성공 후 텍사스 주에 분점을 늘렸고, 1990년대 초까지 미국 전역으로 확장했다. 1993년 비아콤 인수를 시도했으나 실패했다. 1990년대 중반, 영국을 시작으로 호주, 뉴질랜드, 아일랜드, 프랑스, 캐나다 등 해외 진출을 했다.

2. 1. 설립과 초기 성장 (1985년 ~ 1996년)

블록버스터는 1985년 데이비드 쿡이 텍사스 주 댈러스에 첫 매장을 열면서 시작되었다. 쿡은 이전에 운영하던 석유 및 가스 운반 업체인 Cook Data Services가 실패한 후, 아내 신디 쿡의 제안으로 비디오 대여 사업에 뛰어들었다.[16][17] 당시 VHS가 가정용 홈 비디오의 표준으로 자리잡으면서 비디오 대여업이 확장되고 있었고, 쿡은 이 기회를 포착하여 블록버스터를 창업했다.[19][20]

첫 번째 블록버스터 매장은 8,000개의 VHS 테이프와 2,000개의 베타 테이프를 갖추고 있었으며,[22][23][24] 쿡은 회사의 초기 성공을 바탕으로 텍사스 주 갈랜드에 대형 창고를 건설하여 신규 매장 확장을 지원했다.[16] 블록버스터는 지역 인구 통계를 기반으로 매장 재고를 맞춤화하는 전략을 사용했다.[16]

1990년, 블록버스터는 250개 이상의 매장을 가진 경쟁사 에롤스를 인수했으며,[31] 1992년에는 사운드 웨어하우스와 뮤직 플러스 음악 소매 체인을 인수하여 블록버스터 뮤직을 설립했다.[32][33] 1993년에는 스펠링 엔터테인먼트 그룹의 지배 지분을 확보하고,[34] 필립스 일렉트로닉스 N.V.로부터 슈퍼 클럽 소매 엔터테인먼트 공사를 인수하여 음악 및 비디오 소매점을 추가했다.[35]

블록버스터는 주문형 비디오와 케이블 텔레비전의 성장과 같은 새로운 기술의 위협에 대응하기 위해 비아콤에 투자하기도 했지만,[38][39] 결국 1994년 비아콤에 84억 달러에 인수되었다.[42][43]

1990년대에 블록버스터는 영국에서 리츠 비디오 체인을 인수하여 매장 브랜드를 변경하고, 앨버커키와 인디애나폴리스에서 성인 대상 엔터테인먼트 단지인 블록버스터 블록 파티 콘셉트를 시험 운영하기도 했다.[46]

2. 2. 전성기와 경쟁 심화 (1997년 ~ 2006년)

1997년 타코벨의 CEO였던 존 아티오코가 블록버스터의 CEO 자리에 올랐다. 그는 VHS의 대항마로 떠오르고 있던 DVD에 관심을 갖고, 90년대 후반부터 DVD 대여 서비스를 시작했다.[51] DVD는 높은 대여량을 기록해 2000년대 초반 VHS 대여량의 40% 수준까지 따라잡았고, 2003년에는 VHS의 대여 및 판매량을 넘어섰다.

1998년에는 블록버스터 리워드라는 로열티 프로그램을 출시하여 무료 대여 등의 혜택을 제공했다.[55] 같은 해 8월, 비아콤은 블록버스터 뮤직 체인을 Wherehouse Entertainment에 매각했다.[56]

2000년에는 엔론(Enron)과 제휴하여 주문형 비디오 서비스를 만들려고 시도했으나, 2001년 엔론이 계약을 해지하면서 무산되었다.[57][58] 또한, 블록버스터는 신생 넷플릭스(Netflix, Inc.)를 5천만 달러(5000만달러, 2024년 기준 약 8490만달러)에 인수할 기회를 거절했다.[59]

2002년에는 영화와 게임을 사고 파는 Movie Trading Company를 인수하여 DVD 및 게임 거래를 위한 비즈니스 모델을 연구했다.[60] 또한, 영국의 게임 소매업체 체인인 Gamestation을 인수하고, 온라인 DVD 대여 회사인 DVD Rental Central을 인수하여 Blockbuster Online의 기반을 마련했다.[60]

2004년 10월 14일, 블록버스터는 비아콤으로부터 분사되었고, 온라인 DVD 구독 서비스인 Blockbuster Online을 도입했다.[61] 또한, "Game Rush"라는 매장 내 매장 컨셉을 도입하여 게임과 DVD 거래를 시작했다.[62] 같은 해, 블록버스터는 주요 경쟁업체인 할리우드 비디오(Hollywood Video)를 인수하려 했으나 연방거래위원회(FTC)의 반대로 무산되었다.[63][64]

블록버스터는 신작 중심의 전략으로 경쟁 우위를 확보했다. 스튜디오와의 계약을 통해 신작을 조기에 확보하고 많은 물량을 비축하여 고객들이 쉽게 신작을 접할 수 있도록 했다.[135] 그러나 이러한 전략은 다양한 영화 선택권을 제한하고, 영화 역사를 발견하는 즐거움을 감소시킨다는 비판을 받기도 했다.[135]

블록버스터는 가족 친화적인 브랜드 이미지를 위해 성인 영화는 취급하지 않았지만, R 등급 및 등급 미정 영화는 취급했다.[141]

2. 3. 경영 악화와 파산 (2007년 ~ 2010년)

2007년, 블록버스터는 넷플릭스에 대항하기 위해 "토탈 액세스(Total Access)"라는 온라인 DVD 대여 서비스를 시작했다. 이 서비스를 통해 고객은 온라인으로 DVD를 빌리고 매장에 반납하면 무료로 새 영화를 받을 수 있었다. 이 서비스는 큰 성공을 거두었지만, 회사에 큰 손실을 가져왔다.[69] 넷플릭스의 CEO 리드 헤이스팅스는 블록버스터에 온라인 사업 인수를 제안했지만, 이사회의 반대로 무산되었다.[69] 이후 블록버스터는 온라인 DVD 대여 가격을 인상하고 무료 영화 거래를 종료하면서 성장세가 꺾였다.[69]

2007년 6월 19일, 블록버스터는 블루레이를 HD DVD보다 선호하기로 결정하고, 미국, 캐나다, 영국, 멕시코, 호주 전역의 거의 5,000개 매장에 블루레이 타이틀을 비치했다.[71] 같은 해 7월 2일, 세븐일레븐의 전 CEO였던 제임스 W. 키스가 새로운 회장 겸 CEO로 임명되어 매장 개선을 포함한 새로운 사업 전략을 도입했다.[72] 8월에는 스트리밍 비디오 시장 진출을 위해 Movielink를 660만달러에 인수했다.[72]

2008년 2월, 블록버스터는 서킷 시티 인수를 제안했지만, 실사 후 7월에 철회했다.[75] 이후 서킷 시티는 파산했다.[76] 2010년 초, 블록버스터는 6,500개 이상의 매장을 보유했지만,[77] 10월에는 3,425개로 감소했다.[78] 미국에서는 소매점을 폐쇄하고 비디오 대여 키오스크 "블록버스터 익스프레스"를 출시할 계획이었다.[79]

2010년 2월, 블록버스터는 포르투갈 사업을 중단하고 17개 매장을 폐쇄했다.[81] 3월에는 연체료 정책을 변경하고, PwC(PricewaterhouseCoopers)는 블록버스터의 계속 기업 능력에 의문을 제기했다.[82] 블록버스터는 워너미디어, 유니버설 픽처스, 20세기 스튜디오와 제휴하여 DVD 출시일을 앞당기려 했다.

무비 갤러리의 청산으로 블록버스터의 주요 경쟁업체가 제거되었지만, 2010년 7월 1일, 블록버스터는 뉴욕 증권 거래소에서 상장 폐지되었다.[83] 8월에는 채권자에게 이자를 지급하지 못해 최고 구조 조정 책임자(CRO)를 고용했다.[84]

결국 2010년 9월 23일, 블록버스터는 9억달러의 부채와 넷플릭스, 레드박스 등과의 경쟁 심화로 인해 미국 연방 파산법 제11장(Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection)을 신청했다.[84][85] 2011년 2월, 블록버스터는 디시 네트워크에 3억달러 이상에 매각될 위기에 처했다.[88] SK텔레콤이 인수전에 뛰어들기도 했지만,[90] 결국 2011년 4월 6일, 디시 네트워크가 3.2억달러에 블록버스터를 인수하고 8700만달러의 부채를 인수하기로 합의했다.[11]

2. 4. 인수 이후 및 현재 (2011년 ~ 현재)

2010년 9월 23일, 블록버스터는 파산을 신청하고 2011년 디시 네트워크에 인수되었다. 인수 과정에서 5000여 개 이상의 매장이 폐업하였고, 2011년에는 600여 개의 매장만이 영업하였다.[95] 2011년 9월, 블록버스터와 디시 네트워크는 넷플릭스와 경쟁할 새로운 서비스인 블록버스터 무비 패스를 출시한다고 발표했다. 월 10달러에 회원들은 스트리밍 서비스와 우편을 통한 영화 및 게임을 이용할 수 있었으나, 이 패키지는 디시 네트워크의 유료 TV 서비스 가입자에게만 제공되었고 결국 중단되었다.[96][97]

2012년 1월, 디시의 CEO 조 클레이튼은 시장 요인으로 인해 추가 매장 폐쇄가 있을 것이라고 발표했다.[98] 2012년 10월, 디시 네트워크는 블록버스터를 넷플릭스 경쟁 상대로 만들 계획을 폐기한다고 발표했다.[99] 2013년 11월부터 2014년 1월 사이에 미국 내 남은 300개의 블록버스터 직영 매장이 모두 폐쇄되었고 DVD 우편 서비스가 중단되었다.[101][102][103][104] 2014년 미국에는 51개의 프랜차이즈 매장이 운영 중이었다.[105] 디시는 비디오 스트리밍 서비스인 블록버스터 온 디맨드를 유지하다가 2015년 4월 "DISH 무비 팩"으로 대체했다.[106][107][108]

마지막 남은 블록버스터는 오리건주 벤드에 있다.


블록버스터 매장은 Dish에 라이선스 비용을 지불하여 영업을 유지할 수 있었지만,[116] 추가적인 매장 폐쇄가 계속되었다.[118][119][120] 2018년 8월, 오리건주 벤드에 있는 1개의 매장만 남게 되었다.[15][124]

2020년 1월, 뉴질랜드 다가빌에 위치한 미국 외 마지막 매장이 문을 닫았다.[125] 벤드 매장은 세계에서 마지막으로 남은 블록버스터가 되었으며,[126] 블록버스터 기념품을 보관하며 관광 명소로 기능하고 있다.[127] 2020년 8월, 이 매장은 9월에 세 밤 동안 1990년대 테마의 숙박을 위한 Airbnb 임대 목록에 올랐다.[128][129]

Dish에 매각되기 전 블록버스터를 운영했던 법인은 BB Liquidating Inc.라는 이름으로 명목상 활동을 유지하며 저가주로 거래되고 있지만,[130] 더 이상 자산이나 블록버스터 브랜드와 관련이 없다.[131]

4. 몰락 원인

2000년대 후반부터 불법 다운로드(P2P)와 인터넷의 발달로 DVD, 비디오 대여업이 쇠퇴하면서 블록버스터의 매출은 하락했다. 경영 문제까지 겹치면서 블록버스터는 하락세를 탔고, 경쟁업체였던 넷플릭스가 인터넷 영화 시장을 예측해 사업 방향을 변경한 것과 달리, 사업적 경쟁력을 갖추지 못했다는 평가를 받았다.[265] 2010년대에 들어 스마트폰과 OTT 시장이 발달하면서 블록버스터는 큰 타격을 입고, 넷플릭스와 레드박스에 시장 점유율을 완전히 빼앗기게 되었다.

2010년 9월 23일, 블록버스터 본사는 파산을 신청하여 2011년 디시 네트워크에 인수되었다.[265] 디시 네트워크 인수 과정에서 5000개 이상의 매장이 폐업하였고, 인수 이후에도 여러 매장이 정리되어 2011년에는 600여 개의 매장만이 영업하였다. 2014년까지 300여 개의 매장이 폐업하며 위기를 맞았고, 결국 2019년에는 오리건주 벤드에 위치한 단 1개의 매장만이 영업하고 있다.

블록버스터는 전통적인 비디오 대여점과 달리 신작 중심의 전략을 펼쳤다. 인기 신작을 대량으로 확보하고, 고객이 빠르게 선택할 수 있도록 매장 공간을 활용했다. 또한, 스튜디오와 계약을 맺어 다른 회사보다 신작을 빨리 확보하기도 했다.[135] 이러한 전략은 영세 비디오 가게들을 폐업으로 몰고 갔으며, 영화 선택의 폭을 제한했다는 비판을 받았다.[135]

블록버스터는 1985년 설립 이후 가족 친화적인 브랜드 이미지를 위해 성인 영화를 취급하지 않았다.[141]

2005년, 블록버스터는 '연체료 없음' 정책을 도입했지만, 이는 허위 광고라는 논란을 일으켰다.[266] 여러 주 법무 장관들은 고객에게 연체료 대신 구매 가격이 청구되고, 재입고 수수료가 부과된다고 주장했다. 결국 블록버스터는 조사 비용 변제, 고객과의 소통 명확화, 변제 제공 등에 합의해야 했다. 2010년에는 '추가 일일 요금'이라는 이름으로 연체료를 다시 도입했다.

넷플릭스, 훌루, 아마존 언박스와 같은 인터넷 동영상 서비스의 부상과 스마트폰을 통한 애그리게이터 앱 보급은 블록버스터 도산의 주요 원인으로 꼽힌다. 2000년에 넷플릭스는 블록버스터에 5,000만 달러에 회사를 매각하겠다는 제안을 했지만, 블록버스터는 이를 거절했다.
