2. 역사적 배경

4. 대회 진행
2009년 지중해 게임은 6월 26일에 공식적으로 시작되었지만, 첫 축구 경기는 6월 25일에 열렸다.[56] 개막식은 6월 26일에 개최되었고, 같은 날 튀니지 역도 선수 칼릴 엘-마우위가 남자 56kg 경기에서 게임의 첫 금메달을 획득했다.[57][58]

4. 1. 개막식
개막식은 6월 26일 오후 9시(중앙유럽 하계 시간)에 스타디오 아드리아티코에서 공식적으로 시작되었다.[59] 2006년 토리노 동계 올림픽 개막식을 조율했던 이탈리아 사업가 마르코 발리치가 제작 및 감독을 맡았으며, 안무 감독인 더그 잭이 "음악적 순간과 무대 액션"을 개발했다.[60] 이탈리아 지주 회사인 필름마스터 그룹의 자회사인 K-events(현 필름마스터 이벤트)가 개·폐막식 조직을 담당했다.[61][62]개막식에는 국제 올림픽 위원회 위원장 자크 로게, ICMG 회장 아마르 아다디, 이탈리아 총리 실비오 베를루스코니, 알베르 2세 (모나코 대공), 게임 특별 커미셔너 마리오 페스칸테, 페스카라 게임 조직 위원회 회장 사바티노 아라쿠, 유럽 올림픽 위원회(EOC) 회장 패트릭 히키, 이탈리아 올림픽 위원회 회장 지아니 페트루치, EOC 및 CONI 사무총장 라파엘레 파그노치 등 주요 인사 및 귀빈들이 참석했다.[63][64][65][66]

4. 3. 폐막식
2009년 지중해 게임 폐막식은 7월 5일 페스카라 게임을 마무리했으며, 중앙 유럽 서머 타임(UTC+2:00) 오후 9시에 도시의 거리에서 열렸다.[102] 폐막식의 "주요 요소"는 흰색이었으며, 주최측은 관람객들에게 흰색 옷을 입도록 요청했다.[103] 이 행사는 마르코 발리치가 연출하고 K-events가 주최했다.
폐막식에서는 페스카라에서 볼로스로의 게임 인계식이 진행되었으며, 볼로스는 2013년 지중해 게임의 공동 개최 도시로 라리사와 함께 게임을 진행했다. 이탈리아 육군의 취주악대가 이탈리아 국가인 Il Canto degli Italiani를 연주했다. 페스카라 시장 루이지 알보레 마시아는 지중해 게임 깃발을 국제 지중해 게임 위원회 회장 아마르 아다디에게 전달했고, 아다디는 다시 볼로스 시장 알렉산드로스 불가리스에게 전달했다.[103] 폐막식의 마지막 순서는 마리오 카바라도시의 로망스 "E lucevan le stelle"였으며, 이 곡은 조직 위원회 회장 사바티노 아라쿠가 특별히 이 행사를 위해 선택한 지역 팝 가수 피에로 마조케티가 불렀다.[104][105]

제16회 지중해 게임에는 총 23개 국가가 참가했다.
2009년 지중해 게임에는 국제 지중해 게임 위원회(ICMG) 회원국 23개국에서 총 3,368명(남자 2,183명, 여자 1,185명)이 참가했다. 이는 지중해 게임 역사상 가장 많은 참가국 수이며(2005년 튀니스와 동일), 여자 선수 총수는 역대 최고였다. 여성은 1967년에 처음으로 게임에 참가했다.[107] 이탈리아와 그리스는 각각 452명과 391명의 선수로 가장 큰 선수단을 파견했고, 안도라는 13명으로 가장 적은 선수단을 파견했다.
2009년 기준으로 ICMG 회원국이었던 24개의 국가 올림픽 위원회 중 북마케도니아 공화국을 제외한 모든 국가가 페스카라 게임에 참가했다.[108] 몬테네그로는 2006년 독립 이후 처음으로 지중해 게임에 참가했다. 세르비아와 몬테네그로는 2005년 지중해 게임에 세르비아 몬테네그로로 공동 참가했으나, 이번에는 별도로 경쟁했다.[109] 몬테네그로 올림픽 위원회는 2007년 국제 올림픽 위원회로부터 새로운 국가 올림픽 위원회로 승인받았다.[110]
