오늘날 쿠바악어는 쿠바의 사파타 늪지대와 후벤투드섬에서만 발견된다.[90] 과거 카리브해의 다른 지역에도 분포했으며, 이 종의 화석은 케이맨 제도[90], 바하마[91][92], 히스파니올라섬 (도미니카 공화국)에서 발견되었다.[93]

암컷은 소형으로, 전체 길이 2.1m를 넘는 경우는 드물다.[43] 주둥이는 가늘고 길며, 위턱에 두께가 있다. 주둥이의 기부는 마름모꼴로 솟아 있다. 아래턱 첫 번째 이빨이 위턱의 주둥이 끝에 구멍을 내지 않는다. 눈 뒤쪽부터 귀 덮개 위쪽까지 융기가 발달한다. 목에 늘어선 비늘(경린판)은 4개이며, 등쪽 비늘판과는 떨어져 있다. 등쪽 비늘판은 6열로, 규칙적으로 배열된다.[46] 체색은 어린 개체에서는 황갈색에서 올리브색이며, 흑갈색 반점이 흩어져 있다. 성체에서는 짙은 갈색에서 흑갈색이며, 측면과 꼬리에는 반점이 남아 있는 경향이 있다.[43] 홍채는 짙은 녹갈색이다.[46] 사지는 길고 튼튼하며, 육상에서의 이동도 민첩하다.[43]

5. 1. 사냥 및 먹이
어린 쿠바악어는 작은 물고기, 절지동물, 갑각류를 먹는다. 다 자란 개체는 주로 작은 포유류, 물고기, 거북을 먹는다. 뒷쪽 이빨이 무뎌 거북 껍질을 부수는 데 도움이 된다. 미국악어 등 다른 악어에게서도 볼 수 있듯이, 강력한 꼬리를 이용하여 물 밖으로 뛰어올라 나뭇가지 위의 작은 동물을 잡기도 한다.[97] 육상에서도 사냥하며, 육지거북, 이구아나, 후티아 등을 포식하는 것으로 알려져 있다.[43]
