2. 분포 및 서식지

바다악어는 인도 동해안, 스리랑카, 방글라데시에서부터 미얀마, 말레이시아, 브루나이, 인도네시아, 필리핀, 동티모르, 팔라우, 솔로몬 제도, 싱가포르, 파푸아뉴기니, 바누아투, 그리고 오스트레일리아 북쪽 해안까지 기수가 높은 맹그로브 늪, 강 삼각주, 민물 강에 서식한다.[201][204]

인도의 최남단 개체군은 오디샤주의 비타르카니카 야생동물 보호구역에 살고 있고, 북부 오디샤주에서는 1930년대 이후로 기록되지 않았다.[227] 안다만 니코바르 제도의 해안과 슌도르본에서 발견되었다.[228][229][230][231][232] 스리랑카에서는 서부와 남부 지역에서 주로 발견된다.[233]

미얀마에서는 에야워디 삼각주에서 서식한다.[234] 태국 남부의 팡응아주에서 기록되었다.[235] 싱가포르에서는 순게이 불로 습지 보호 구역과 크란지와 만다이 근처 습지에서 서식한다.[236] 캄보디아, 중국, 세이셸, 태국, 베트남에서 지역적으로 멸종되었다.[204][237][238]

오스트레일리아 북부에는 특히 다윈 근처의 여러 강 시스템, 예를 들어 애들레이드, 메리, 댈리강과 인접한 빌라봉과 강어귀에서 바다악어가 번성하고 있다. 오스트레일리아의 바다악어 개체수는 100,000~200,000마리로 추정된다.[239][240] 분포 지역은 웨스턴오스트레일리아주의 브룸에서부터 노던 준주 해안 전체를 거쳐 남쪽으로 퀸즐랜드주의 록햄프턴까지이다. 아넘랜드 지역의 앨리게이터강은 노던 준주에도 서식하는 오스트레일리아악어와 비교하여 바다악어를 악어와 닮아서 이름이 잘못 지어졌다.[241]

3. 묘사

바다악어는 다른 악어들에 비해 넓은 주둥이를 가지고 있지만, 늪악어보다는 긴 주둥이를 가지고 있다.[212] 눈에서 주둥이 중앙을 따라 한 쌍의 융기가 이어진다. 비늘은 타원형이며 비늘판은 다른 종에 비해 작거나 일반적으로 완전히 없다. 다른 악어류보다 목에 갑옷판이 적다.[213][214]

어린 바다악어는 밝은 노란색이며 몸과 꼬리에는 검은 줄무늬와 반점이 있다. 이 색깔은 악어가 성체가 될 때까지 수년 동안 지속된다. 성체의 색깔은 훨씬 더 어두운 녹색 갈색이며, 때때로 밝은 황갈색이나 회색 부분이 나타난다. 모든 연령의 바다악어의 배쪽 표면은 흰색 또는 노란색이다. 줄무늬는 몸의 아랫부분에 있지만 배까지는 이어지지 않는다. 꼬리는 회색이며 어두운 띠가 있다.[215][216]

3. 1. 형태

바다악어는 대부분의 악어에 비해 넓은 주둥이를 가지고 있지만, 늪악어보다는 긴 주둥이를 가지고 있으며, 그 길이는 바닥 너비의 두 배이다.[212] 주둥이 중앙에는 한 쌍의 능선이 눈에서부터 이어진다. 비늘은 타원형이고, 비늘판은 다른 종에 비해 작거나 일반적으로 완전히 없다. 또한, 경추 방패와 등쪽 방패 사이에 뚜렷한 틈이 있으며, 등쪽 방패에 가로로 배열된 큰 비늘판의 뒤쪽 가장자리 사이에는 작은 삼각형의 비늘판이 있다. 비늘판이 상대적으로 부족하다는 점은 포획되거나 불법 가죽 거래에서, 그리고 아성체 또는 어린 바다악어를 다른 악어와 구별해야 하는 현장 지역에서 바다악어를 식별하는 데 유용하다. 다른 악어보다 목에 갑옷판이 더 적다.[213][214]

바다악어의 머리


어른 바다악어의 넓은 몸은 대부분의 다른 마른 악어들의 몸과 대조적이다.[218] 어린 바다악어들은 몸과 꼬리에 검은 줄무늬가 있는 옅은 노란색이다. 이 색깔은 악어들이 성체가 될 때까지 몇 년간 지속된다. 어른이 된 후에는 색깔이 훨씬 더 짙은 녹색을 띠며, 약간의 밝은 황갈색 또는 회색 부분이 가끔 보인다. 어떤 성체는 꽤 창백한 피부를 유지할 수 있는 반면, 다른 것들은 너무 어두워서 검게 보일 수 있다. 모든 연령의 바다악어들은 배 쪽 표면이 흰색 또는 노란색이다. 줄무늬는 몸의 아랫면에 있지만 배 쪽으로는 확장되지 않는다. 꼬리는 회색이고 어두운 띠가 있다.[215][216]

현존하는 악어류와 파충류 중에서 가장 큰 종류 중 하나로, 평균 몸길이는 4미터, 체중은 450킬로그램이다. 야생과 사육 환경 모두에서 몸길이가 7미터에 달하는 거대한 개체도 있다. 주둥이는 다소 길며 기저부의 1.75~2배이고, 돌기와 융기가 발달한다. 아래턱의 첫 번째 이빨이 위턱의 끝을 관통한다. 후두린판(후두골판)이 없다. 경린판은 4개이다. 몸통 등쪽에 늘어선 큰 비늘(배린판)은 규칙적으로 배열된다. 체색은 녹갈색이다. 물갈퀴는 앞다리에서는 발가락 기저부에만, 뒷다리에서는 발가락 전체에 발달한다. 알은 장경 약 8센티미터, 단경 약 5센티미터이다.

3. 2. 크기

바다악어는 현존하는 세계에서 가장 큰 강가 포식자이다. 하지만, 그들은 꽤 작게 시작한다. 새로 부화한 바다악어는 길이가 약 28cm이고 평균 71g의 무게가 나간다.[220] 악어의 무게는 길이가 증가함에 따라 대략 세제곱으로 증가한다.[217] 이것은 6m인 악어가 5m인 악어보다 두 배 이상의 무게가 나가는 이유를 설명해 준다.[218] 악어의 경우, 선형적인 성장이 결국 줄어들고 특정한 시점에서 더 부피가 커지기 시작한다.[219]

과학적으로 확인된 바다악어의 가장 큰 두개골은 캄보디아에서 수집된 국립 자연사 박물관의 표본이다. 두개골의 길이는 76cm이고 아래턱 근처의 너비는 48cm이며, 하악은 98.3cm이다. 길이는 알려지지 않았지만, 큰 바다악어의 두개골 대 길이 비율을 기준으로 했을 때, 그 길이는 6.7m에서 7m 범위였을 것으로 추정되지만, 유난히 큰 두개골을 가졌을 수도 있고 다른 큰 바다악어들과 같은 두개골 대 전체 길이 비율을 갖지 않았을 수도 있다.[208][223][209] 몸에서 분리되면, 큰 수컷 바다악어의 머리의 무게는 200kg 이상이 나갈 수 있는데, 여기에는 거대한 무는 힘을 제공하는 두개골 기저부의 큰 근육과 힘줄이 포함된다.[224] 가장 큰 이빨은 길이가 9cm였다.[225][226]

기록상 가장 큰 바다악어는 1979년 파푸아뉴기니에서 어망에 걸려 익사했다. 말린 가죽과 머리를 합친 길이는 6.2m였으며, 수축과 꼬리 끝이 없다는 점을 고려하면 6.3m 정도였을 것으로 추정된다.[9][8]

성체 수컷 바다악어는 어린 성체부터 노령 개체까지 길이가 일반적으로 3.5m에서 5m 정도이며, 무게는 200kg에서 1100kg 정도이다.[42][43][44][45] 매우 크고 나이 든 수컷은 길이가 6m을 초과할 수 있으며, 추정 무게는 최대 2000kg에 달할 수 있다.[33][8][38][46]

바다악어는 다른 악어들과 달리 바닷물에서 생활하는 경향이 강하다. 대부분의 다른 악어 종들도 염류샘을 가지고 있어 바닷물에서 생존할 수 있지만, 극단적인 상황이 아니면 바다로 나가지 않는다.[245]

바다악어는 해류를 이용하여 먼 거리를 이동한다. 오스트레일리아에서는 20마리의 바다악어에 위성 송신기를 부착하여 관찰한 결과, 8마리가 먼바다로 나갔으며, 그 중 한 마리는 파 노스 퀸즐랜드 동부 해안에서 카펀테리아만 서해안까지 25일 동안 590km를 이동했다. 또 다른 한 마리는 20일 동안 411km를 헤엄쳤다. 이들은 많이 움직이지 않고 물 위에 떠서 해류를 타는 방식으로 에너지를 절약한다. 또한, 해류의 방향이 바뀔 때까지 며칠 동안 안전한 만에 머무르거나, 강을 따라 이동하기도 한다.[242]

악어의 뇌는 포유류보다 훨씬 작지만(바다악어의 경우 체중의 0.05% 정도), 바다악어는 어려운 작업도 학습할 수 있으며, 계절 변화에 따른 먹이의 이동 경로를 파악하고, 의사소통 능력도 뛰어날 수 있다.[248][249]

크로커다일과에 속하는 대부분의 종들처럼, 바다악어는 먹이를 고르는 데 까다롭지 않고, 먹이 종류를 이용 가능성에 따라 쉽게 바꾼다. 또한 오랫동안 비교적 적은 양의 먹이를 먹고 살 수 있기 때문에 탐욕스럽지도 않다. 바다악어는 미시시피악어나 나일악어와 달리 건조한 땅에서 사냥하는 것으로 알려져 있지 않다.[244][212]

4. 1. 행동

4. 2. 사냥 및 먹이

크로커다일과 동물들 대부분처럼 바다악어는 먹이를 가리지 않고, 상황에 따라 쉽게 바꾼다. 또한, 오랫동안 적은 양의 먹이로도 살 수 있다. 크기와 분포 때문에, 바다악어는 현존하는 악어 중 가장 다양한 먹이를 사냥한다.[244] 새끼들은 작은 물고기, 개구리, 곤충, 무척추동물 등을 먹는다. 어린 개체는 다양한 담수 및 해수 어류, 양서류, 갑각류, 연체동물(복족류, 두족류 포함), 조류, 중소형 포유류, 뱀, 도마뱀 등도 먹는다. 1.2m 이상 자라면, 작은 무척추동물 대신 물고기, 소형 포유류, 조류 등 작은 척추동물을 주로 먹는다.[254]

갑각류 중에서는 ''Scylla'' 속의 큰 칠게가 맹그로브 숲에서 자주 잡힌다.[255][256] 에뮤와 까치기러기 등 땅에 사는 물새 종류가 가장 흔하게 잡히는 조류이다. 빠르게 나는 새나 박쥐도 수면 가까이 있으면 잡을 수 있고,[244] 깝작도요 같은 도요물떼새도 갯벌에서 먹이를 찾다가 잡힐 수 있다.[220][257] 어린 개체와 아성체는 큰쥐사슴, 돼지사슴 같은 작은 유제류를 먹는다.[258] 필리핀원숭이,[259] 코주부원숭이,[260] 긴팔원숭이, 날쌘왈라비,[261] 황금자칼, 사향고양이, 거북이, 왕박쥐, 산토끼, 설치류, 오소리, 수달, 작은사슴, 천산갑 등도 먹이로 기록되었다.[262][263] 스리랑카에서 2.6m 길이의 바다악어가 인도호저를 잡아먹은 희귀한 사례도 있다.[264] 포유류와 조류는 물가에서만 발견되기 때문에, 악어는 왕박쥐 무리가 있는 나무 아래나 물소 떼가 먹는 곳처럼 먹이가 집중되는 곳을 찾아 약한 동물을 노린다.[256]

오스트레일리아악어와 달리 바다악어는 사탕수수두꺼비 독에 부분적 내성이 있어 먹을 수 있지만, 소량만 섭취하여 효과적인 방제는 어렵다.[265] 큰 악어는 기회가 되면 작은 종도 무시하지 않는다. 8.7kg~15.8kg (1.36m~1.79m)의 아성체 바다악어가 인도 오디샤주에서 자기 체중의 50~92%에 달하는 염소를 잡아먹은 기록이 있어, 어릴 때부터 큰 먹이를 공격할 수 있다.[230][266][267] 어린 개체부터 아성체까지는 크기에 관계없이 거의 모든 동물을 먹기 때문에 성체보다 식단이 다양하며, 성체는 특정 크기 이하의 먹이를 무시하기도 한다.[268]

성체 바다악어는 사슴(Sambar deer), 멧돼지(Wild boar), 말레이맥(Malayan tapir), 캥거루(Kangaroo), 멧돼지(Feral pig),[120] 인간(Human), 오랑우탄(Orangutan), 딩고(Dingo), 호랑이(Tiger),[121] 반텡(Banteng),[148] 물소(Water buffalo), 가우르(Gaur) 등도 잡아먹는다.[122][123][124][125][126] 하지만 큰 동물은 큰 수컷만이 공격하며, 큰 유제류 등은 순다르반 같은 일부 지역을 제외하면 드물게 분포한다.[95] 염소, 물소, 멧돼지 등은 바다악어 서식지에 도입되어 야생화되었고, 큰 악어를 먹여 살릴 수 있다.[27] 닭, 양, 돼지, 말, 소 등 가축도 기회가 되면 먹는다.[95] 바다악어는 바다뱀(Sea snake), 바다거북(Sea turtle), 바닷새(Sea bird), 듀공(Dugong), 가오리목(Ray)(톱상어[128] 포함), 작은 상어(Shark) 등 다양한 해양 동물도 잡아먹는다. 해양 동물 포식은 해안이나 육지가 보이는 곳에서 주로 발생하며, 짝짓기철에 해안 가까이 오는 암컷 바다거북과 새끼, 황소상어(Bull shark) 등이 잡힌다.[95][129][130][131][132][133] 바다악어가 공해에서 사냥한다는 증거로, 육지에서 멀리 떨어진 곳에서만 서식하는 원양어류 잔해가 위에서 발견되기도 했다.[11][12]

바다악어는 물속에 잠긴 채 조용히 다가가 갑자기 공격하는, 다른 악어와 같은 사냥법을 사용한다. 미시시피악어, 나일악어와 달리 육지 사냥은 알려져 있지 않다.[244][212] 어린 바다악어는 낮은 가지에 있는 먹이를 사냥할 때 몸 전체를 위로 띄울 수 있다. 붉은털원숭이 사냥 시, 꼬리로 쳐서 물에 빠뜨려 쉽게 잡기도 한다. 꼬리 사용이 의도적인지는 불확실하다. 다른 악어처럼 날카로운 이빨은 먹이를 잡는 데 적합하지만, 살을 자르기에는 적합하지 않다.[212] 작은 먹이는 통째로 삼키고, 큰 동물은 물에 끌고 가 익사시키거나 부숴 죽인다.[269] 큰 먹이는 "데스 롤링"(죽음의 회전)으로 뜯어내거나 머리를 움직여 찢는다.[270] 배부른 악어가 먹이를 저장하기도 하지만, 왕도마뱀 등이 훔쳐갈 수 있다.[271]

수컷은 약 16세에 몸길이 약 3.3m에 성적으로 성숙해지는 반면, 암컷은 몸길이 2.1m와 12~14세에 성적으로 성숙해진다.[209] 바다악어는 수위가 가장 높은 우기에 짝짓기를 한다. 오스트레일리아에서는 수컷과 암컷이 9월과 10월에 구애를 하고 암컷은 11월에서 3월 사이에 알을 낳는다.[272] 우기의 기온 상승은 이 종의 번식 행동을 유발할 수 있다.[256]

악어는 일반적으로 매년 둥지를 틀지만, 암컷 바다악어가 격년으로 둥지를 트는 사례나 한 번의 우기에 두 번 산란을 시도한 기록도 있다.[256] 암컷이 둥지를 선택하면 암수 모두 조수 강이나 담수 지역, 특히 늪지대를 따라 펼쳐진 해안지대인 둥지 영역을 방어하게 된다.

둥지는 종종 놀랍도록 노출된 위치에 있으며, 주변에 초목이 거의 또는 전혀 없는 진흙으로 인해 햇볕과 바람으로부터 보호받기 어렵다. 둥지는 진흙과 초목으로 구성된 더미로, 일반적으로 길이 175cm, 높이 53cm이며 입구의 지름은 평균 160cm이다.[256] 바위 파편이나 축축한 저잔디 들판과 같이 서식지가 없을 것 같은 곳에 둥지를 트는 경우도 있다.[273][274] 암컷 악어는 둥지 입구 주변에 나뭇잎과 기타 잔해를 긁어모으는데, 이 덮개는 알에게 상당한 양의 따뜻함을 제공하는 것으로 알려져 있다. 이러한 둥지 습성은 바다악어가 발견되는 오스트랄라시아 지역의 고지대에 둥지를 짓는 메거포드과 새의 습성과 유사하다.[212][275]

5. 인간과의 관계

바다악어는 인간과의 관계에서 공격성과 탐욕스러움으로 인해 "인간을 잡아먹는 악어"로 알려져 있다.

제2차 세계 대전 중 람리섬 전투에서 후퇴하던 일본군 병사들이 바다악어에게 공격받아 다수가 희생되었다는 이야기가 널리 알려졌지만, 현재는 의문시되고 있다.[175] 동인도에서 발생한 보트 사고로 28명이 바다악어에게 희생되었다는 보고도 있다.[39] 1985년에는 생태여성주의자 발 플룸우드가 바다악어의 공격에서 살아남았다.[176][177]

2011년 9월 필리핀 민다나오섬 부나완에서 포획된 ""는[198] 현지 주민 2명 등 총 3명을 잡아먹은 것으로 추정되며, "세계에서 가장 큰 포획된 악어"로 기네스 세계 기록에 등재되었다.[199] 2013년 2월까지 생존했으며, 몸길이 6.17미터, 무게 1.075톤에 달했다.[200] 부나완에서는 이보다 더 큰 개체가 목격되었다는 이야기도 있다.

2018년 7월, 인도네시아 파푸아 주에서는 보호구역에 침입한 남성이 바다악어에게 잡아먹힌 후, 600명이 넘는 군중이 292마리의 바다악어와 뉴기니악어를 도살했다.[178]

바다악어는 서식지 파괴와 남획으로 개체 수가 감소하고 있다. 오스트레일리아에서는 1971년부터 보호 동물로 지정되어 개체 수가 점차 증가하고 있다.[197]

5. 1. 인간에 대한 공격

바다악어와 나일악어는 모든 악어 중에서 인간을 먹잇감으로 취급하는 경향이 가장 강하다.[276] 바다악어는 자신도 모르게 자기 영역으로 쳐들어온 인간을 공격해온 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다. 악어가 직접적으로 접촉할 수 있다면, 그 힘과 위협적인 크기와 속도 때문에 직접적인 포식 공격에서 살아남을 가능성은 거의 없다. 미시시피악어와는 달리, 바다악어를 상대할 때는 매우 공격적이기 때문에 가능하면 서식지를 완전히 피하는 것이 유일하게 권장되는 정책이다.[212]



공격에 대한 정확한 데이터는 오스트레일리아 이외의 지역에서는 제한적이다.[278] 1971년부터 2013년까지, 바다악어의 공격으로 인해 오스트레일리아에서 보고된 총 사망자 수는 106명이었다.[279][278] 공격의 수준이 낮은 것은 위험에 처한 수많은 분류, 강, 호수, 해변에 악어 경고 표지판을 붙이려는 오스트레일리아의 야생동물 관계자들의 광범위한 노력 때문일 수도 있다.[280] 보르네오섬[281], 수마트라섬[282], 동인도 (안다만 제도)[283][284] , 미얀마에서는 덜 공개된 공격이 보고되었다.[285] 보르네오섬 사라왁주에서는 2000년부터 2003년까지 매년 평균 2.8건의 치명적인 공격이 있었다.[230] 오스트레일리아의 북부 지역에서는 인간에 대해 공격적인 행동을 보이는 바다악어들을 재배치하려는 시도가 있었지만, 문제 악어들이 그들의 원래 지역으로 돌아갈 수 있기 때문에 효과가 없다는 것이 입증되었다.[286] 2007년부터 2009년까지 다윈 지역에서는 "문제 악어"의 67~78%가 수컷으로 확인되었다.[287]

한 연구에 따르면 매년 최대 20~30건의 공격이 발생하는 것으로 추정된다.[288] 이 숫자는 인간과 바다악어가 비교적 개발되지 않은, 저경제 및 농촌 지역에서 공존하는 여러 지역에 비추어 볼 때 보수적일 수 있다.[289] 그러나 바다악어가 매년 수천 명의 인명 피해에 책임이 있다는 과거의 주장은 과장되었을 가능성이 높으며, 재정적 이익을 위해 악어에 대한 부정적인 인식을 극대화함으로써 이익을 얻었을 수 있는 가죽 회사, 사냥 조직 및 기타 출처에 이익을 주기 위해 조작되었을 수 있다.[230][224][230]

5. 2. 문화적 참고

티모르섬에서는 바다악어가 신성한 동물로 여겨진다. 전설에 따르면 이 섬은 거대한 악어가 만들었다고 한다. 파푸아인들은 이와 유사하고 매우 복잡한 신화를 가지고 있으며, 전통적으로 악어를 친척(보통 아버지나 할아버지)으로 묘사했다.[212]

오스트레일리아 원주민 신화인 완지나에 따르면, 바다악어는 오스트레일리아악어와 달리 나쁜 기운으로 가득 차 있고 너무 크게 자랐기 때문에 민물에서 추방되었다고 한다.[293] 바다악어를 묘사한 원주민 암각화는 드물지만, 카카두와 아른헴랜드의 동굴에서 3,000년 이상 된 예들이 발견되어 종의 분포와 거의 일치한다. 그러나 현대 원주민 예술에서는 묘사된다.[294] 라라키아인들은 그들 자신을 악어의 후손으로 생각하고 그것을 그들의 토템으로 여긴다.[295] 그들은 악어를 항구의 수호자로 존중하고 악어 고기를 먹지 않는다.[296]

6. 보존 상태

이 종은 멸종 위험이 최소한으로 간주되지만, (CITES)에 따라 국제 거래의 영향으로부터 보호받고 있다.


  • 부속서 I (종 또는 그 부분/파생물의 모든 상업적 거래 금지): 오스트레일리아, 인도네시아, 파푸아뉴기니를 제외한 모든 야생 개체군
  • 부속서 II (수출 허가를 받은 상업적 거래 허용; 수입 허가는 수입국의 법률에 따라 필요할 수도 있고 아닐 수도 있음): 오스트레일리아, 인도네시아, 파푸아뉴기니 야생 개체군과 상업적 목적으로 사육된 전 세계 모든 개체군


바다악어는 가죽이 모든 악어류 중에서 상업적으로 가장 가치가 높아 고기와 알을 얻기 위해 사냥되기도 한다. 20세기 동안 규제되지 않은 사냥으로 인해 서식 범위 전역에서 이 종의 개체 수가 급격히 감소하여 1971년까지 오스트레일리아 북부의 개체 수는 95% 감소했다. 1940년부터 1970년까지는 규제되지 않은 사냥이 절정에 달했으며, 지역적으로 바다악어 개체군에 돌이킬 수 없는 피해를 입혔을 수 있다.[152] 현재 이 종은 서식하는 모든 오스트레일리아 주와 준주(서호주(1970년부터), 노던테리토리(1971년부터), 퀸즐랜드(1974년부터))에서 완전한 법적 보호를 받고 있다.[153]

불법 사냥은 일부 지역에서 여전히 계속되고 있으며, 일부 국가의 보호는 매우 효과적이지 못하고, 광대한 서식 범위에 걸쳐 거래를 모니터링하고 통제하기가 어려운 경우가 많다. 그러나 많은 지역이 회복되지 않았다. 일부 개체군 조사에 따르면 어린 악어는 존재하지만, 발견된 표본 중 성체 크기 범위에 있는 것은 10% 미만이며, 스리랑카나 팔라우와 같이 특히 큰 수컷은 포함되지 않는다. 이것은 지속적인 박해와 착취, 그리고 회복되지 않은 번식 개체군을 나타낸다.[154][155] 비타르카니카 국립공원이나 보르네오의 사바와 같이 개체군이 더 균형 잡힌 곳에서는 관찰된 표본 중 28%와 24.2%가 3m 이상의 성체 크기 범위에 있었다.[84][156]

서식지 손실은 여전히 이 종에 대한 주요 문제이다. 오스트레일리아 북부에서는 바다악어의 많은 둥지 서식지가 야생 물소의 짓밟힘에 취약하지만, 물소 근절 프로그램으로 이 문제가 상당히 줄었다. 적합한 서식지가 광범위하게 남아 있는 곳에서도 미세한 서식지 변화가 문제가 될 수 있는데, 예를 들어 안다만 제도에서는 둥지를 트는 데 사용되는 담수 지역이 점점 인간 농업으로 전환되고 있다. 악어 가죽의 상업적 가치가 감소한 후, 보존 노력을 실시하는 데 가장 큰 즉각적인 어려움은 종종 인간에게 위협이 될 수 있는 종의 위험과 그로 인한 악어에 대한 부정적인 시각이었다.[157][158]
