1992년 3월 8일 에히메현 마쓰야마시 호리에정 앞바다(호리에만)에서 타이라기 조업 중이던 잠수부가 백상아리로 추정되는 상어에게 공격받아 사망했다.[235][236] 잠수부는 "빨리 올려달라"며 구조를 요청했으나, 생명줄이 끊어져 사망했다.[235] 잠수복과 헬멧에서 발견된 상어 이빨은 약 5미터 크기의 백상아리 이빨로 확인되었다.[237][238] 이 사고로 잠수부에 의한 해저 작업이 중단되고, 상어 포획 작전이 실시되었지만, 상어는 포획되지 않았다.[241][242]

뉴질랜드에서는 2007년부터 370km 이내에서 백상아리를 완전히 보호하고 있으며, 뉴질랜드 국적 선박의 어획을 금지하고 있다.[217] 2018년에는 보존부에서 뉴질랜드 위협 분류 시스템에 따라 "국가적 멸종위기종"으로 분류했다.[218]
미국 캘리포니아주에서는 1994년부터 주법에 따라 백상아리를 보호하고 있으며,[219] 2013년에는 캘리포니아 멸종위기종법에 추가되었다.[222] 2019년에는 상어 미끼, 상어 유인물 등을 이용해 백상아리를 유인하는 행위를 금지하는 법안이 통과되었다.[225] 매사추세츠주에서는 2015년부터 백상아리 포획, 케이지 다이빙, 먹이 주기 등을 금지하고 있다.[8]
한국에서는 백상아리가 해양보호생물로 지정되어 보호받고 있으며, 포획, 유통, 보관 등이 금지된다.
8. 사육
백상아리는 사육이 매우 어려운 종으로 알려져 있으며, 전 세계적으로 장기간 사육에 성공한 사례는 드물다.[260] 2024년 현재 살아있는 백상아리를 사육·전시하는 수족관은 없다.
- 미국 몬터레이 베이 수족관: 1984년부터 2011년까지 백상아리 여러 마리를 사육 전시했다.[261] 최장 기록은 2004년 9월부터 2005년 3월까지 198일 동안 어린 암컷 백상아리를 사육한 것이다.[184] 이 개체는 방류 후 30일 동안 추적되었다. 2007년 8월부터 2008년 2월까지는 어린 수컷을 162일간 사육했다. 몬터레이 베이 수족관은 백상아리 사육의 주요 목적이 과학적 연구였기 때문에 더 이상 백상아리를 전시할 계획이 없다고 밝혔다.[190]
- 일본 오키나와 츄라우미 수족관: 2016년 1월, 3.5m 크기의 수컷 성체를 사육·전시했지만, 3일 만에 폐사했다.[191][192] 이는 성체 백상아리의 세계 최초 전시 사례였다.[260][262]
- 기타 국가:
- 미국: 캘리포니아주 수족관에서 1955년, 1980년, 1981년에 소형 백상아리를 최대 7일,[261] 와이키키 수족관에서 1961년에 4m 개체를 2일,[261] 플로리다주 수족관에서 1962년 12월에 2.4m 개체를 1일 반 사육했다.[261] 시월드 샌디에이고에서는 1969년에 약 1.9m 개체를 8일 포함, 1981년까지 30마리를 사육했고 최장 16일 사육했다.[261] 1994년에도 10일간 사육했다.[261] 스타인하트 수족관에서는 1984년까지 6마리를 사육했고, 그중 1980년 8월 12일에 들여온 2.3m 개체를 5일간 사육했다.[261]
- 일본: 시마네현 시마네 해양관에서 2002년에 어린 개체를 4일,[262] 오이타 마린 팰리스 수족관에서 2004년에 1일 사육했다.[263]
- 오스트레일리아: 오션월드 맨리에서 1968년, 1974년, 1984년에 최대 10일,[261] 골드코스트 시월드에서 1976년에 1일,[261] 언더워터월드에서 1998년에 2일 사육했다.[261]
- 대만: 1997년에 태아 8마리를 사육했지만 하루 만에 폐사했다.[261]
- 남아프리카 공화국: 더반 수족관에서 1968년과 1978년에 소형 백상아리 사육을 시도했지만 모두 하루 이내에 폐사했다.[261]
- 기타: 미국과 터키의 민간인이 사육을 시도했지만 장기 사육에는 이르지 못했다.[261]
백상아리 사육은 끊임없이 움직여야 생존할 수 있다는 점,[260] 필요한 막대한 자원과 비용, 식성, 크기, 이동성, 포획 및 사육으로 인한 스트레스 등 여러 요인으로 인해 매우 어려운 것으로 여겨진다.[194]
