2. 1. 결성 및 초기 활동 (2007-2013)

"캣피시 앤 더 보틀맨"(Catfish and the Bottlemen)은 원래 "The Prestige"로 알려졌으며,[9][10] 2007년 5월 웨일스 란디드노(Llandudno)에서 밴 맥캔(Ryan Evan "Van" McCann)과 빌리 비비(Billy Bibby)가 함께 기타를 연주하며 결성되었다.[11][12] 맥캔의 부모님 또한 란디드노에서 민박집을 운영했으며,[13] 그는 비비의 남동생 스티븐을 통해 처음 비비를 만났다.[14] 곧 베이스를 맡은 벤지 블레이크웨이(Benji Blakeway)가 합류하여 밴드의 세 번째 창립 멤버가 되었다. 얼마 지나지 않아 학교 친구인 존 바(Jon Barr)가 드럼으로 합류하면서 라인업이 완성되었다.[15] 10세부터 기타를 연주해 온 비비는 맥캔과 블레이크웨이에게 연주법을 가르쳤다.[16]

2013년, 캣피시 앤 더 보틀맨은 커뮤니온 뮤직(Communion Music)과 계약을 맺고 "Homesick", "Rango", "Pacifier" 세 싱글을 발매했다.[24][98][139] 2014년에는 아일랜드 레코드(Island Records)와 계약하고 싱글 "Kathleen"을 발매했으며, 이 곡은 짐 애비스(Jim Abbiss)가 프로듀싱했다.[25][140] "Kathleen"은 MTV의 가장 인기 있는 트랙에서 1위를 차지했다.[140]

2014년 6월 19일, 데뷔 앨범 ''The Balcony'' 발매를 발표했다. 2014년 9월 15일에 발매된 이 앨범은 영국 음반 차트(UK Albums Chart)에서 10위로 데뷔했으며,[35] 골드 인증을 받았다.[142]

2014년 여름, 리드 기타리스트 빌리 비비가 탈퇴하고 조니 본드가 합류했다.[28][29] 빌리 비비는 2015년 자신의 밴드 빌리 비비 & 더 라이 스마일즈(Billy Bibby & The Wry Smiles)를 결성했다.[33][34]

2016년 3월 23일, 캣피시 앤 더 보틀맨은 트위터와 인스타그램을 통해 두 번째 정규 앨범의 제목이 ''The Ride''이며, 2016년 5월 27일에 발매될 것이라고 발표했다.[39] 6월 3일까지, ''The Ride''는 영국 앨범 차트에서 1위에 올랐으며, 첫 주에 38,000개의 판매고를 올렸다.[39]

2016년 7월 8일, 맨체스터의 캐슬필드 볼에서 Vant, 브로큰 핸즈, 리틀 코메츠의 지원을 받아 가장 큰 규모의 헤드라인 공연을 펼쳤다.[40] 2016년 8월에는 맨체스터에서 자체 최대 규모의 단독 공연을 개최하고 《The Balcony》의 전곡 11곡과 《The Ride》에서 6곡을 연주했다.[146]

2017년 7월 1일, 런던의 핀스버리 파크에서 열린 첫 번째 커뮤니티 페스티벌의 헤드라이너를 맡았다.[41]

2. 4. 《The Balance》 및 멤버 탈퇴 (2019-2022)

2019년 1월 8일, 밴드는 세 번째 정규 앨범 ''The Balance''의 리드 싱글 "Longshot"을 발매했다.[42] 1월 25일에는 앨범 아트워크 및 트랙리스트와 함께 앨범을 공식 발표했다. 이후 "Fluctuate", "2all", "Conversation" 싱글을 순차적으로 발매하고, 4월 26일에 ''The Balance''를 발매했다.[43]

2021년 8월, 캣피시 앤 더 보틀맨은 레딩 앤 리즈 페스티벌에서 처음으로 헤드라이너를 맡았다.[44][45] 같은 해 9월, 스완지의 싱글턴 파크에서 공연했고, 워링턴에서 열린 네이버후드 위켄더 페스티벌의 헤드라이너를 맡았다.[46][47] 또한 9월에는 카디프의 밀레니엄 스타디움에서 톰 존스와 함께 스테레오포닉스를 지원할 예정이었으나, 코로나19 규제로 인해 2022년 6월로 연기되었다.[48] 그러나 2022년 6월, "예상치 못한 실제적인 문제"로 인해 공연에서 철수했다.[49]

2021년 9월 29일, 드러머 밥 홀이 밴드를 떠난다고 발표했다.[50] 2022년 6월 5일, 기타리스트 조니 본드는 2021년 3월에 밴드를 떠났다고 발표하며, 그룹 내 "참을 수 없는" "반복적인 행동"을 탈퇴 이유로 밝혔다.[51]

2023년 11월 23일, 캣피시 앤 더 보틀맨은 밴드의 활동 중단을 종료했음을 알리며, 2024년 8월에 레딩 앤 리즈 페스티벌의 헤드라이너로 참여할 것이라고 발표했다.[53] 2024년 2월 16일, 밴드는 5년 만에 처음으로 신곡을 공개할 것을 예고하며, 인스타그램 계정에 6초 분량의 짧은 클립을 공유했다.[54]

밴드의 네 번째 정규 앨범의 리드 싱글인 "Showtime"이 2024년 2월 22일에 발매되었다.[57][58] 그래미 어워드 수상 경력의 프로듀서 데이브 사디가 프로듀싱한 이 싱글의 발매와 동시에 7월 19일 카디프 성과 8월 24일 에든버러 서머 세션에서 두 번의 여름 공연이 발표되었다.[59]

라이언 에반 '밴' 맥캔은 위드네스에서 태어났지만,[72][73] 언론 보도와 맥캔 본인의 인터뷰에서 가끔 오스트레일리아에서 태어났다고 언급하여 출생지에 대한 혼란이 있었다.[74][14][75] 맥캔, 매튜 벤자민 '벤지' 블레이크웨이, 기타 기술자 조쉬 "래리" 라우, 그리고 전 멤버 로버트 '밥' 홀과 윌리엄 '빌리' 비비는 북웨일스 란디드노에서 자랐다.

비비, 블레이크웨이, 홀, 맥캔은 각각 애크링턴,[76] 체스터, 셰필드[77] 및 위드네스[78][79] 출신으로 모두 잉글랜드 북부에 위치해 있으며, "2~3살 쯤의 아이들"이었을 때 모두 란디드노로 이사했다.[14] 맥캔은 전 멤버 비비와 함께 란디드노의 이스골 존 브라이트를 다녔고, 드러머 밥 홀은 라이달 펜로스 스쿨을 다녔다.[80][81] 조니 본드는 잉글랜드 북동부의 노스 쉴즈 출신이다.[82]
