캐나다에서는 법무박사(Juris Doctor, JD) 학위가 일반법 분야의 주요 학위로 자리 잡았으며, 이전의 많은 법학사(LLB) 프로그램을 대체하였다. 토론토 대학교가 2001년에 처음으로 법학 학위 명칭을 JD로 변경하였다.[86][87] 법무박사 프로그램에 입학하려면 학사 학위 과정을 최소 2년 또는 3년 이수하고 북미 법학대학 입학시험(Law School Admission Test)에서 좋은 성적을 거두어야 한다.[88] 공식적인 요건에도 불구하고, 거의 모든 성공적인 지원자들은 법무박사 프로그램 입학 전에 학사 학위를 취득하였다.[89] 캐나다의 JD는 학사 학위 자격으로 간주된다.[90]
