대한민국에서 흰뺨검둥오리와 함께 가장 흔하게 관찰되는 오리류로, 겨울철새이자 텃새이다. 낮에는 주로 물이나 물가 모래톱에서 먹이활동을 하거나 휴식을 취하며, 해질녘에는 농경지로 이동해 낱알 등을 먹는다. 발쪽에 동맥과 정맥이 붙어있어 열교환 장치 역할을 하므로, 추운 겨울에도 결빙된 호수 얼음 위에서 휴식을 취할 수 있다. 가을 추수기에는 곡식을 좋아하여 농작물에 피해를 주기도 한다.^[44] 이동 시기에는 약 88.5km를 이동한다.

번식기가 아닌 시기에는 호수, 강, 해안가에 서식하며 무리를 지어 생활한다. 10월 말~12월에 월동 중 짝짓기를 하고, 봄에는 수컷과 암컷이 함께 번식지로 이동한다. 식성은 식물성이 주를 이루는 잡식으로, 수초 잎과 줄기, 식물 종자, 조개류 등을 먹는다. 수영은 잘하지만 잠수는 하지 못하며, 물속에 머리를 넣거나 거꾸로 서서 먹이를 먹는 모습을 자주 볼 수 있다. 넓적부리오리, 비오리와 같이 녹색광택머리를 가지고 있다.

큰고니는 잡식성이며 먹이 선택에 있어 매우 유연하다.^[57] 먹이의 대부분은 복족류, 곤충(딱정벌레, 파리, 나비목, 잠자리, 날도래 포함), 갑각류, 기타 절지동물, 지렁이, 다른 새들의 배설물, 다양한 종류의 씨앗과 식물질, 그리고 뿌리와 괴경으로 구성되어 있다.^{[58][59][60][61][62]} 일반적으로 식물은 특히 가을 이동기와 겨울철에 큰고니 식단의 더 큰 부분을 차지한다.

5. 번식

번식기는 4~8월이며, 땅 위에 둥지를 만들어 흐린 노란색 또는 녹색 알을 8-10개 낳는다.^[66] 암컷은 8~13개의 크림색에서 녹색빛을 띤 황토색 알을 낳으며 얼룩은 없다.^[73][74] 알의 크기는 약 58mm x 32mm이다.^[74] 알은 하루 걸러 하나씩 낳으며, 포란은 알이 거의 다 낳아졌을 때 시작된다.^[74] 수컷은 암컷이 알을 낳으면 둥지를 떠나 수컷들만의 무리를 만든다.^[67][68] 새끼를 키우는 것은 암컷이 전담한다.^[69][70] 포란 기간은 27~28일이며, 이소 기간은 50~60일이다.^[73][75] 부화한 새끼는 조숙성이라서 바로 수영을 할 수 있다.^[76] 하지만 모성 각인으로 어미 근처에 머물며, 따뜻함과 보호뿐만 아니라 서식지를 배우고 기억하며 먹이를 찾는 방법과 장소를 배운다.^[77]

북반구의 아한대에서 온대에 걸쳐 널리 분포하며, 북쪽에서 번식하는 개체는 겨울에는 남쪽으로 이동하여 월동한다. 대한민국에서는 겨울철새이자 텃새로 전국적으로 도래하며, 일본 홋카이도와 혼슈 중부의 산간 지대에서는 소수가 번식한다. 일본, 러시아 등지에서 번식하고, 9-11월에 남쪽으로 날아와 한국에서 겨울을 보낸다.

7. 아종

• ''Anas platyrhynchos diazi''(플로리다큰고니)는 멕시코큰고니와 비슷하지만 몸색깔에 붉은색이 있다. 플로리다반도에서 멕시코 국경까지 분포한다.
• 하와이큰고니와 레이산큰고니는 독립종 ''Anas wyvilliana''와 ''Anas laysanensis''로 각각 취급하는 설도 유력하다.^[15]

청둥오리는 1998년 이후 IUCN 적색 목록에서 관심대상종으로 분류되어 왔다. 이는 2천만 km²가 넘는 광대한 서식 범위와^[96] 10년 또는 3세대에 걸쳐 개체 수가 감소하기보다는 증가하고 있기 때문이며, 취약종으로 분류될 이유가 없다. 또한 청둥오리의 개체 수는 매우 많다.^[97]

1998년 이후로, 청둥오리는 IUCN 적색 목록에서 관심대상종으로 분류되어 왔다.^[96] 이는 약 19.9428억km²)가 넘는 광대한 서식 범위^[96]와 10년 또는 3세대에 걸쳐 개체 수가 감소하기보다는 증가하고 있기 때문이며, 따라서 취약종으로 분류될 만한 이유가 없다. 또한 청둥오리의 개체 수는 매우 많다.^[97]

많은 수조류와 달리, 청둥오리는 인간에 의한 환경 변화로부터 이익을 얻었으며 심지어 일부 지역에서는 침입종으로 간주될 정도이다.^[98] 도시 공원, 호수, 연못 및 기타 인공 수역에서 흔히 볼 수 있으며, 인간에 대한 온순한 성격과 아름다운 색깔 때문에 인간 서식지에서 종종 관용되거나 환영받는다.^[20]

청둥오리는 인간 지역에서 공존하는 데 매우 성공적이어서, 주요 보존 위험은 인간과 청둥오리가 한 지역에 정착한 후 해당 지역의 전통적인 오리들 사이에서 유전적 다양성이 상실되는 것이다. 청둥오리는 매우 적응력이 뛰어나 도시 지역에서도 살아남고 번성할 수 있는데, 개발 이전에는 더욱 지역화되고 민감한 수조류 종들이 서식했을 수도 있다.^[99] 원래 서식하지 않는 지역에 야생화된 청둥오리를 방출하면 토착 물새와의 교잡을 통해 문제가 발생하는 경우가 있다.^[98][100] 이러한 텃새 청둥오리는 유전자 오염을 통해 가까운 종의 지역 개체군의 토착 야생 오리와 교잡하여 생식력 있는 자손을 낳는다.^[100] 야생 오리의 다양한 종의 유전자 풀이 완전히 혼합되면 많은 토착 물새가 멸종될 수 있다.^[100] 청둥오리는 대부분의 집오리의 조상이며, 자연적으로 진화한 야생 유전자 풀은 집오리와 야생화된 개체군에 의해 유전적으로 오염된다.^[101]

시간이 지남에 따라, 거의 전형적인 각 종의 예 사이에 이르는 연속적인 잡종이 발달한다; 종 분화 과정이 역전되기 시작한다. 이는 보전에 대한 우려를 야기했는데, 특히 하와이오리 , 뉴질랜드 회색오리 (''A.s. superciliosa'') 태평양 검은오리 아종, 아메리카 검은오리, 얼룩오리 , 멜러오리 , 황색부리오리 , 멕시코오리 등 청둥오리의 근연종이 그렇다.

세계자연보전연맹(IUCN)에 의해 관심대상종(LC)으로 지정되어 있다.^[131]

일본의 다음 도도부현에서 레드리스트에 등재되어 있다.^[133]
