2. 어원

파운드는 게르만어군에서 "무게"를 뜻하는 말이었다. 이것이 고대 로마의 무게 단위인 리브라를 가리키는 말이 되면서 무게 단위로서 자리잡게 되었다.[71] 원래 균형을 의미하였던 라틴어 리브라는 저울의 수평을 맞춘다는 의미에서 무게 단위로 도입되었는데, 고대 로마의 1 리브라는 오늘날 1 파운드보다 가벼워서 약 0.33kg에 해당하였다.[72]

3. 역사

파운드는 매우 오랜 역사를 가진 측정 단위로, 시대와 장소에 따라 서로 다른 기준이 적용되었다. 전통적으로 파운드는 무게의 단위였지만, 현대물리학의 정립 과정에서 질량과 무게의 개념이 분리되어 정의됨에 따라 오늘날에는 질량의 단위로 쓰이고 무게의 단위로는 파운드힘이 쓰인다.[6]

역사적으로 메소포타미아 지방에서 보리 한 알의 무게를 기준으로 그레인(grain)이 정해졌고, 그 두 배의 무게 단위로 파운드(pound)가 정해졌다. 파운드는 사람이 하루에 소비하는 식량의 단위로, 1파운드의 밀가루로 구운 빵이 하루치 주식량에 해당한다.

'파운드'라는 단어는 라틴어 표현 libra pondola(librala로 측정된 무게)에서 유래되었다.[6]

3. 1. 고대 로마의 리브라

고대 로마 도량형의 무게 단위는 리브라였다. 고대 로마는 존속 기간이 길었던 만큼 리브라 역시 역사적으로 다양한 변이가 있었지만, 기원전 268년 이후 대략 328.9g의 값으로 고정되었다.[85][86][87] 1 리브라는 12 운키아(uncia)로 세분되었는데, 라틴어 운키아는 문자 그대로 12분의 1을 의미하는 단어였다.[88] 리브라의 약어는 "lb"였고, 이 표기는 파운드의 약어로 이어졌다. 또한 운키아는 파운드를 세분한 단위 온스의 어원이 된다.[89]

3. 2. 동로마의 리트라

동로마 제국의 무게 단위는 라틴어 리브라의 그리스어 변형인 리트라(λίτραel)였고 콘스탄티누스 1세의 도량형 개혁 이후 1 리트라는 약 324 그램으로 사용되다가 후대에 이르러 319 그램으로 줄어들었다.[90] 또한 분야에 따른 변형이 있어서 올리브 기름을 잴 때에는 표준 리트라의 5분의 4인 256 그램을 1 리트라로 셈하였고, 은과 같은 귀금속엔 333 그램을 1 리트라로 정하였다.[90]

3. 3. 중세 유럽의 파운드

서로마 제국의 붕괴 이후에도 옛 로마 속주 지역에서는 로마의 도량형이 계속 사용되었다. 그러나 각 지역마다 기준이 되는 표준 용기가 달랐기 때문에 중세 1천년 동안 파운드의 양은 지역과 용도에 따라 다양했다. 1848년 독일에서 발간된 교과서에 실린 비교표에 따르면, 420그램에서 500그램까지 다양한 값이 사용되었다.

프랑스에서는 파운드에 해당하는 무게 단위로 고대 로마의 리브라를 계승한 리브르(livre)를 사용했다. 9세기에서 14세기까지 1 리브르는 약 367.1 그램이었다.[91] 1350년 이후에는 파리 리브르가 기준이 되었고, 이 값은 약 489.5 그램이었다.[91] 프랑스 혁명 이후 미터법이 도입되면서 공식 도량형은 킬로그램이 되었고, 리브르는 일상생활에서 500그램을 가리키는 관습적인 단위가 되었다.

3. 5. 미국의 파운드

미국에서는 1893년 4월 5일 멘덴홀 명령에 따라 야드는 미터를 기준으로, 파운드는 킬로그램을 기준으로 정의되었다. 멘덴홀 명령 자체는 1866년 법령에 따른 환산값 1파운드 = 1/2.2046 kg을 사용하고 있다.

1894년 3월 21일 환산표에서는 영국의 1883년 측정 결과를 받아들여 1파운드 = 0.4535924277kg이 되었다. 이후 영국에서는 1898년 5월에 값을 반올림하여 공식적으로 1파운드 = 0.45359243kg으로 제정했지만, 미국에서는 반올림하지 않아 약간의 차이가 발생했다. 1959년에는 국제 파운드 = 0.45359237kg을 사용하게 되었다. 1894년 정의값과 1959년 정의값의 차이는 약 1.27 × 10⁻⁷이다.

5. 미터법과의 관계 및 기타 국가

대한민국에서는 1993년까지 1파운드 = 0.45359243kg이 사용되었다. 이 값은 1894년 미국의 정의인 1파운드 = 0.4535924277kg에 기반하며, 1953년 제정된 계량법 시행령 및 (구)계량단위령에 법정되어 있었다. 1959년에 국제파운드(= 0.45359237kg)가 정해진 후에도 개정되지 않았다. 국제파운드 정의와 일본 국내에서의 파운드 정의 간의 차이는 1993년에 계량단위령[64]이 개정·시행될 때까지 35년간 방치되었다.

파운드의 단위 기호는 lb이다.[55] 일본 계량법에서도 lb이다.[56] 파운드는 영국 등의 통화 단위인 파운드와 같은 어원(라틴어로 무게를 나타내는 pondus)이지만, 많은 언어에서 같은 명칭을 사용함에도 기호는 다르다. 일본에서는 ''''斤''''이라는 한자를 사용한 적이 있다.

중량 파운드(lbf)를 단순히 "파운드"라고 부르는 경우가 있어, 질량의 파운드임을 명시하기 위해 lbm이라는 기호가 사용되기도 한다.[57]
