2. 역사

토론토(Toronto)라는 지명은 한때 휴런족 언어로 "사람들이 모이는 곳"을 의미한다는 설이 있었지만, 언어학적으로는 모호크족 언어의 "tkaronto"에서 유래한 것으로 여겨진다.[312] 이는 "물 속에 나무가 서 있는 곳"을 의미하며, 프랑스 탐험가와 지도 제작자를 거쳐 토론토가 되었다. 지형적으로는 토론토 북부의 심코호(Lake Simcoe)에서 휴런족이 물고기를 가두기 위해 묘목을 심었던 오릴리아(Orillia) 부근이 기원으로 여겨진다. 당시 온타리오호(Lake Ontario)에서 휴런호(Lake Huron)로 이어지는 육로 수송로였던 이 지역에서는 널리 사용되는 지명이었다.

제2차 세계대전 당시 유럽과 중국에서 온 피난민들이 취업을 위해 토론토에 정착하였다. 이탈리아와 포르투갈 출신 건설 노동자들도 토론토에 정착하였다. 1960년대 후반, 인종 차별적인 이민 정책이 철폐되면서 전 세계 모든 나라, 모든 인종의 이민을 받게 되었다. 이로 인해 교외 지역 개발이 이루어지면서 인구가 증가하여, 1951년보다 100만 명이 늘었고, 1971년에는 그 두 배인 200만 명이 되었다. 1980년대에는 몬트리올을 제치고 인구뿐 아니라 경제에서도 캐나다 제1의 도시가 되었다.

3. 지리



토론토의 면적은 630.18km2로, 도쿄 23구, 서울, 마드리드와 거의 같은 크기이다. 남북 길이는 최대 21km, 동서 길이는 최대 43km이며, 가로로 긴 사다리꼴 모양이다. 호숫가 길이는 46km이다. 남쪽은 온타리오 호, 서쪽은 에토비코 크릭과 427번 고속도로, 북쪽은 스틸스 애비뉴(Steeles Ave.), 동쪽은 루지 강과 접하며, 각각 경계선을 이룬다.

시의 서쪽에는 험버 강, 동쪽에는 돈 강이 토론토 만을 동서로 감싸듯이 흐르며, 많은 지류들이 도시를 가로지른다. 토론토 만, 토론토 섬, 레즐리 스트리트 스핏은 호수 물 흐름으로 인한 토사 퇴적으로 자연 형성되었다. 개울과 강이 많아 숲이 무성한 협곡이 넓게 펼쳐져 있으며, 공원과 레크리에이션 하이킹 코스가 잘 조성되어 있다. 그러나 협곡 때문에 도시 설계가 격자 형태를 유지하기 어려워, 일부 도로는 단절되거나 육교로 협곡을 넘기도 한다. 깊은 협곡은 집중호우 시 우수를 배수하지만, 돈 강 근처 등 일부 지역은 홍수에 취약하다.

토론토의 겨울은 최저 기온이 -10°C까지 떨어지기도 하며, 바람이 많이 불어 체감 온도는 더욱 낮아진다. 때때로 얼음과 비를 동반한 눈보라가 도시 시스템을 마비시키기도 하는데, 이러한 눈은 11월부터 4월 중순까지 내릴 수 있다. 그러나 날씨가 풀리면 5°C에서 12°C까지 올라가 초봄과 같은 날씨를 보이기도 한다.[359]

봄과 가을은 건조하면서도 비가 많이 오며, 따뜻하거나 시원한 날씨를 보인다. 겨울과 여름에 비해 상대적으로 짧으며, 지구 온난화의 영향으로 점차 짧아지는 추세이다.

대한민국 서울과 비교하면, 토론토의 봄과 가을은 더 짧고, 봄은 한 달 정도 늦게 시작하며, 가을은 한 달 정도 빨리 시작한다. 겨울은 서울보다 더 춥고 눈이 많이 오며, 여름은 특별한 우기 없이 서울과 비슷한 무더운 날씨를 보인다.

2009년 11월에는 70년 만에 처음으로 눈이 내리지 않은 11월을 기록했다.[359]

3. 2. 지역

토론토 제도는 1858년 폭풍으로 본토와의 연결이 끊어질 때까지 자연적인 반도였다.[87] 이로 인해 항구로 연결되는 수로가 생성되었다. 이 반도는 연안 표사에 의해 스캐버러 절벽 해안을 따라 퇴적된 퇴적물이 토론토 제도 지역으로 운반되면서 형성되었다.

포트 랜드 습지와 반도의 또 다른 퇴적물 공급원은 돈 강의 퇴적물이었다. 돈 강은 토론토의 퇴적암 지대를 통해 넓은 계곡을 파고 얕은 항구에 퇴적물을 퇴적시켰다. 항구와 돈 강의 수로는 여러 번 준설되었다. 돈 강의 하류는 19세기에 직선화되고 수로화되었다. 이전 하구는 습지로 배수되었지만, 오늘날 돈 강은 콘크리트 수로인 키이팅 채널을 통해 항구로 배수된다. 이 지역의 홍수를 완화하고 공원을 조성하기 위해 2020년대 전반기에 두 번째, 보다 자연스러운 하구가 남쪽에 건설되어 새로운 섬인 Ookwemin Minising을 만들었다.

토론토의 면적은 630.18km2이며, 도쿄 23구, 서울, 마드리드와 거의 같은 크기이다. 남북의 길이는 최대 21km, 동서의 길이는 최대 43km이며, 가로로 긴 사다리꼴 모양을 하고 있다. 호숫가의 총 길이는 46km이다. 남쪽은 온타리오 호수, 서쪽은 에토비코 크릭과 427번 고속도로, 북쪽은 스틸스 애비뉴, 동쪽은 루지 강과 접하고 있으며, 각각 경계선을 이룬다.

3. 3. 대중교통

토론토의 대중교통은 토론토 교통국(TTC)과 고 트랜싯(GO Transit)이 담당한다. TTC는 지하철, 시내버스, 노면 전차를 운영하며, 일부 노선은 광역 토론토 지역까지 운행한다.[56] GO 트랜싯은 유니언 역 등지에서 통근열차와 버스를 운행한다. TTC는 북미에서 뉴욕, 멕시코시티 다음으로 이용객이 많은 대중교통 체계이다.

토론토 지하철은 3개의 노선(1호선, 2호선, 4호선)으로 구성되어 있으며, 1호선은 보건 메트로폴리탄 센터까지 연장 운행된다.

TTC는 또한 광범위한 버스 및 노면전차 네트워크를 운영하며, 노면전차는 도심부를 운행하고 버스는 지하철이 운행되지 않는 지역을 운행한다.

5호선 에글린턴선은 2024년 완공 예정이며, 6호선 핀치 웨스트선도 2024년까지 완공될 예정이다.[288] 2019년 온타리오 주 정부는 온타리오선,[289] 1호선 연장,[290] 2호선 연장, 5호선 연장 계획을 발표했다.[291][292]

유니온 역은 GO 트랜싯, 비아 레일, UP 익스프레스, 앰트랙의 철도 교통을 수용할 수 있도록 개보수 및 업그레이드 중이다.[293] 새로운 유니온 역 버스터미널은 2020년 완공 예정이다.[294]

GO 트랜싯은 광역 철도 및 버스 시스템을 운영하며, 평일 25만 명 이상, 연간 5700만 명의 승객을 수송한다.[295][296] 메트롤링스는 지역 급행 철도를 구현하고 있으며, 2030년까지 많은 철도 노선을 전철화할 계획이다.[297]

VIA철도는 토론토와 밴쿠버를 잇는 캐네디언과 토론토와 오타와,[338][339] 몬트리올,[340][341] 윈저,[342][343] 서니아 간 열차,[344] 나이아가라 폭포행 열차를 운행한다.

앰트랙은 토론토와 뉴욕 간 메이플리프를 운행한다.[345]

GO트랜짓은 7개의 철도 노선을 운영하며, 주변 소도시들을 연결한다. 철도가 없는 지역에는 도시 간 수송용 대형 버스가 운행된다.[346]

기타 철도로는 유니언피어슨 익스프레스[347][348]와 코크레인행 열차[349]가 있다.

4. 문화

토론토는 이민자의 도시로 불릴 만큼 다양한 민족들이 각자의 고유 문화를 유지하며 살아가는 곳이다. 그래서 토론토만의 특별한 문화는 없는 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 여러 소수민족들이 모여 사는 곳으로는 차이나타운, 코리아타운, 리틀 포르투갈, 리틀이태리, 리틀 자메이카(자메이카, 바베이도스, 그레나다 등 서인도 제도 출신 이민자 거주 지역), 유대인 거주지, 인도인 거주지 등이 있다.

토론토에는 50개가 넘는 발레 및 무용단, 6개의 오페라단, 2개의 심포니 오케스트라, 다양한 음악 공연장과 극장들이 있다. 캐나다 국립발레단[215], 캐나다 오페라단[216], 토론토 심포니 오케스트라[217], 캐나다 일렉트로닉 앙상블, 캐나다 스테이지 컴퍼니 등이 토론토를 기반으로 활동한다. 주요 공연장으로는 포시즌스 공연예술센터, 로이 톰슨 홀, 프린세스 오브 웨일즈 극장, 로열 알렉산드라 극장, 매시 홀, 메리디안 아트 센터(구 토론토 아트 센터), 엘긴 및 윈터 가든 극장, 메리디안 홀(이전 명칭 "오키프 센터", "험밍버드 센터", "소니 공연예술센터") 등이 있다.

매년 여름, 캐나다 스테이지 컴퍼니는 토론토 하이 파크에서 "하이 파크의 꿈"이라는 야외 셰익스피어 연극 공연을 한다. 캐나다 명예의 거리는 킹 스트리트와 심코 스트리트를 따라 난 보도에 별을 설치하여 성공한 캐나다인들의 업적을 기리는 곳이다.

영화 및 TV 프로그램 제작은 토론토의 주요 산업 중 하나이다. 토론토 국제영화제는 세계적인 영화 축제이다.[224]

토론토의 카리바나(구 스코티아뱅크 카리브 카니발)는 매년 7월 중순에서 8월 초에 열린다.[225] 트리니다드 토바고 카니발을 본뜬 이 축제는 1967년 카리브해 지역 사회가 캐나다 센테니얼을 기념하며 시작되었다. 40년이 넘는 세월 동안 매년 100만 명 이상이 토론토 레이크 쇼어 불러바드를 찾을 만큼 성장했다.

5. 경제

토론토는 캐나다 경제의 중심지이자 국제적인 비즈니스 및 금융 허브이다. 캐나다의 금융 및 산업 수도로 여겨지며, 베이 스트리트의 금융 지구에는 많은 은행과 증권 회사가 밀집해 있다. 토론토 증권 거래소는 시가총액 기준으로 세계에서 7번째로 큰 증권 거래소이다.[152] 2009년에는 포브스지가 선정한 세계에서 가장 큰 기업 500개 중 7개의 기업이 토론토에 위치하여 전 세계 도시 중 8위를 기록했다.[378]

캐나다 로열 은행 (Royal Bank of Canada), 토론토도미니온은행 (Toronto-Dominion Bank), 스코티아뱅크 (Scotiabank), 몬트리올 은행 (Bank of Montreal), 캐나다 제국 상업 은행 (Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce) 등 캐나다의 5대 은행(빅5) 모두 토론토에 글로벌 본사를 두고 있으며, 캐나다의 주요 보험 대기업들도 함께 있다.[153][154] 세계경제포럼에 따르면 이들 은행은 2007년부터 2014년까지 세계에서 가장 안전한 은행 시스템으로 선정되었다.[93]

토론토는 미디어, 출판, 통신, 정보 기술 및 영화 제작 산업의 중요한 중심지이기도 하다. 벨 미디어, 로저스 커뮤니케이션즈, 토르스타 등이 토론토에 본사를 두고 있다. 광역 토론토 지역에는 마그나 인터내셔널, 피자 피자, 미스터 서브, 셀레스티카, 매뉴라이프, 선라이프 파이낸셜, 토요타 캐나다, 허드슨 베이 컴퍼니, 포시즌스 호텔, 페어몬트 호텔 앤 리조트와 같은 주요 기업 및 국제 기업의 캐나다 자회사가 있다.[155]

제조업 활동의 상당 부분은 시 외곽에서 이루어지지만, 토론토는 여전히 산업 부문의 도매 및 유통 중심지로 남아 있다. 퀘벡시티-윈저 회랑을 따라 그레이트 레이크스 메갈로폴리스 내에 위치하고 도로 및 철도 연결이 잘 되어 있어 인근의 자동차, 철, 강철, 식품, 기계, 화학 및 제지 생산을 지원한다. 1959년 세인트로렌스 해상 수로가 완공되면서 배들이 대서양에서 그레이트 레이크스로 접근할 수 있게 되었다.

토론토는 캐나다와 세계 기술 산업의 중요한 중심지이며, 연간 520억 달러의 매출을 창출한다. 2017년 토론토의 기술 기업들은 3만 개에 가까운 일자리를 제공했는데, 이는 샌프란시스코 베이 지역, 시애틀, 워싱턴 D.C.의 일자리 수를 합친 것보다 많다.[166] 토론토 광역 지역, 워털루 지역, 그리고 해밀턴 시 사이의 지역은 브랜햄 그룹에 의해 "디지털 복도"로 명명되었으며,[167] 캘리포니아의 실리콘밸리와 유사하게 기술 기업과 일자리가 고밀도로 집중된 지역이다.[168]

1970년대까지는 몬트리올이 캐나다에서 가장 큰 도시였으나, 자동차 산업 등의 급속한 발전과 퀘벡주 내에서의 분리운동으로 인한 기업 이전 등으로 토론토가 몬트리올을 추월하게 되었다. 현재 토론토시의 경제는 금융, IT, 문화산업 등의 서비스업 중심으로 전환되었으나, 광역 토론토시의 공업 생산량은 여전히 캐나다 전체 생산량의 절반에 육박한다.

2018년에는 2750만 명의 관광객이 토론토를 방문하여 103억 달러의 경제 활동을 창출했다.[170]

6. 교육

토론토에는 여러 공립 대학교와 대학이 있다. 이 도시는 또한 여러 보충학교, 신학교, 그리고 직업학교의 본거지이기도 하다. 이러한 기관의 예로는 글렌 굴드를 배출한 왕립 음악원, 영화 제작자 노만 주이슨이 설립한 미디어 교육 기관인 캐네디언 필름 센터, 그리고 기독교 고등 교육 기관이자 캐나다 최대의 신학교인 틴데일 신학대학교가 있다.[394]

온타리오주 다른 지역에 있는 여러 다른 공립 대학교들도 토론토에 분교나 시설을 운영하고 있는데, 여기에는 킹스턴 퀸즈 대학교, 오타와 대학교, 웨스턴 온타리오 대학교, 윌프리드 로리어 대학교, 그리고 궬프 대학교가 포함된다.[196] 궬프 대학교는 이토비코크 북서쪽에 험버 폴리테크닉과 함께 궬프-험버 대학교라는 분교를 운영하고 있다.[197] 공립 대학교 외에도 토론토는 보스턴에 본교를 둔 사립 대학교인 노스이스턴 대학교의 분교를 두고 있다.[198]

토론토에는 초등 및 중등 교육을 제공하는 네 개의 공립학교 교육위원회가 있다. 비아몽드 교육청, 중남부 가톨릭 지구 교육청, 토론토 가톨릭 교육위원회, 토론토 지구 교육청이다. 비아몽드 교육청와 토론토 지구 교육청는 세속 교육 공립학교 교육위원회이고, 중남부 가톨릭 지구 교육청와 토론토 가톨릭 교육위원회는 별도 학교 공립학교 교육위원회이다. 비아몽드 교육청와 중남부 가톨릭 지구 교육청는 프랑스어 제1언어 학교 교육위원회이고, 토론토 가톨릭 교육위원회와 토론토 지구 교육청는 영어 제1언어 학교 교육위원회이다.
