2. 명칭 및 발견

유럽인 중에서는 1770년 제임스 쿡이 오스트레일리아 동부 해안을 항해하며 그레이트 배리어 리프를 처음으로 목격했다. 같은 해 6월 11일, 쿡의 배인 인데버호는 암초에 좌초되어 수리에 7주가 걸렸다.[231]

4. 생태

난쟁이밍크고래, 인도양혹등돌고래, 혹등고래 등 30종의 고래목 동물이 그레이트배리어리프에 기록되어 있다. 많은 수의 듀공도 서식한다.[43][44][45] 흰동가리, 붉은베이스, 붉은목황제(붉은목황제돔), 그리고 여러 종의 도다리와 자리돔을 포함하여 1,500종 이상의 어류가 서식한다.[44]

푸른바다거북, 장수거북, 매부리바다거북, 붉은바다거북, 납작등바다거북, 올리브각시바다거북 등 6종의 바다거북이 번식을 위해 이곳을 찾는다. 그레이트배리어리프의 푸른바다거북은 유전적으로 구별되는 두 개의 개체군을 가지고 있다.[48] 17종의 바다뱀이 따뜻한 물 속에서 서식하며, 북쪽보다 남쪽에서 더 흔하다.[47]

바다악어는 해초 근처 해안의 맹그로브와 염습지에 서식한다.[50] 약 125종의 상어, 가오리, 홍어류, 은상어가 서식하며,[51][52] 대왕조개와 다양한 갯민숭달팽이, 원뿔달팽이를 포함한 약 5,000종의 연체동물이 기록되어 있다.[44] 49종의 파이프피시와 9종의 해마도 기록되었다.[47]

흰배흰꼬리수리와 붉은발제비갈매기를 포함한 215종의 조류(해양 조류 22종, 해안 조류 32종)가 서식한다.[33] 대부분의 둥지는 북쪽과 남쪽 지역의 섬에 있으며, 140만~170만 마리의 조류가 번식을 위해 이곳을 이용한다.[54][55]

5. 환경적 위협

기후변화로 인해 바다 온도가 상승하면서 대규모 산호 백화 현상이 발생하고 있으며, 이는 그레이트배리어리프에 가장 큰 위협이다. 해양 온도가 상승하면 산호는 작은 광합성 조류를 배출하며 하얗게 변한다. 조류를 배출한 산호는 수온이 제때 내려가지 않으면 몇 주 후 죽게 된다. 연구에 따르면 지난 20년간 산호초의 91%가 백화되었으며, 그린피스는 작년에만 전체 산호초의 22%가 백화되었다고 주장한다.[258]

기후 변화, 환경오염, 왕관가시불가사리 번식, 어업은 산호초 생태계 건강에 큰 위협이다. 기타 위협으로는 해난사고, 원유 유출, 열대성 사이클론 등이 있다.[58] 해양 산성화는 산호 성장에 필수적인 아라고나이트의 해양 내 함량을 감소시켜 산호 성장을 방해한다.

그레이트 배리어 리프 해양공원청은 해양 온난화를 유발하여 산호 백화 현상을 증가시키는 기후변화를 가장 큰 위협으로 꼽는다.[62][63] 해양 열파로 인한 대규모 산호 백화 현상은 1998년, 2002년, 2006년, 2016년, 2017년, 2020년 여름에 발생했으며,[64][13][65] 매년 발생할 것으로 예상된다.[66] 2020년 연구에 따르면 그레이트 배리어 리프는 기후변화로 인해 1995년 이후 산호의 절반 이상을 잃었다.[65][67] 기후변화는 물고기의 서식 범위를 변화시켜 포식성 바닷새의 새끼 사망률을 높이고, 바다거북의 개체 수와 서식지에도 영향을 미친다.[70]

아무르불가사리


아무르불가사리는 산호충을 먹이로 삼는다. 이 불가사리의 대량 발생은 산호초를 황폐화시킬 수 있다. 2000년, 산호초 연구 센터(RRC) 연구에 따르면, 대량 발생으로 인해 조사된 산호초의 살아있는 산호 피복률이 66% 감소했다.[84] 이러한 대량 발생은 수질 악화와 불가사리 포식자의 남획으로 인해 악화되는 것으로 알려져 있다.[84][85]

지속 불가능한 남획은 먹이 사슬을 교란시키고, 혼획, 서식지 파괴 등 문제를 일으킨다. 어업은 또한 선박으로 인한 수질 오염 증가, 원치 않는 종(돌고래와 거북이 등)의 혼획, 트롤 어업, 닻, 그물 등으로 인한 서식지 파괴를 통해 산호초에 영향을 미친다.[86]

해상 사고는 원유 유출을 일으켜 산호초에 심각한 피해를 입힌다. 상업용 해상 운송로가 그레이트 배리어 리프를 통과하기 때문에 해상 사고는 심각한 문제이다.[88] 2010년 4월 3일, 벌크 운반선 선넝 1호|선넝 1호중국어가 더글러스 암초에 좌초되어[91] 최대 4톤의 기름이 유출되었고[92] 암초에 광범위한 피해를 입혔다.
