2. 계통학

장내구균은 조건혐기성 미생물로, 산소가 있거나 없는 환경 모두에서 호흡하여 생존할 수 있다.[41] 포자를 만들지는 않지만, 넓은 온도 범위(10~45°C)와 pH (4.5~10.0), 높은 염화 나트륨 농도에서도 생존 가능하다.[42]
