2. 역사적 배경

인도 정부는 "매우 많은 수의 자이쉬-에-무함마드 테러리스트, 훈련 교관, 고위 지휘관 및 지하디 그룹"이 사망했다고 주장했다.[55] 인도 언론은 훈련소가 완전히 파괴되었으며 약 200~350명의 자이쉬-에-무함마드 무장 단체가 사망했다고 보도했지만,[77][78] 정확한 수치는 언론사마다 달랐다.[79] 국가기술연구기구는 공습 전에 훈련소에서 약 300개의 활성 휴대폰을 발견했다고 밝혔다.[80][81]

반면, 파키스탄 정부는 공격으로 인한 사상자나 기반 시설 피해가 없다고 주장했다.[82][83] 현지 주민들은 오전 3시경에 4개의 폭탄이 인근 숲과 들판을 강타했으며, 현지 남성이 입은 가벼운 타박상과 찰과상, 폭발의 충격파로 인한 집에 생긴 벽 금을 제외하고는 사람이나 건물에 대한 피해는 보고되지 않았다고 증언했다.[84][85]

AP통신 언론인들은 2월 26일에 해당 지역을 방문하여 분화구와 손상된 나무를 확인했으며, 마을 사람들은 사상자가 없다고 보고했다.[86] 알 자지라 취재팀은 공습 이틀 후 현장을 방문하여 "쪼개진 소나무와 바위"가 흩어져 있는 4개의 폭발 분화구를 발견했다. 현지 병원 관계자와 주민들은 사상자나 부상자를 만나지 못했다고 주장했다.[87] 로이터 통신 기자들은 마드라사에 대한 접근을 반복적으로 거부당했지만, 구조물과 그 인근이 뒤쪽에서 손상되지 않은 것을 확인했다.[85][69]
