1. 개요

미터(m)는 길이를 측정하는 데 사용되는 국제 단위계(SI)의 기본 단위이다. 어원은 그리스어 '메트론'에서 유래되었으며 프랑스어를 거쳐 국제적으로 사용되었다. 1790년 프랑스 정부는 지구 자오선을 기준으로 미터를 정의했고, 이후 여러 번 정의가 변경되어 1983년에는 진공에서 빛이 1/299,792,458초 동안 이동한 거리로 정의되었다. 미터법은 다양한 SI 접두어를 사용하여 십진 배수를 나타낼 수 있으며, 한국에서는 1902년 대한제국 시기에 공식 도입되었고, 1964년 계량법 시행으로 법정 계량 단위가 되었다.

2. 유래 및 역사

미터(m)는 ‘측정하다’라는 뜻의 그리스어 ‘μετρονel’에서 유래하였으며, ‘단위’를 뜻하는 프랑스어 ‘mètre프랑스어’를 거쳐 국제적으로 사용되게 되었다.[13] 영어에서 '미터'라는 단어의 사용은 1797년에 시작되었다.[13]

길이의 소수 단위 제안은 1668년 잉글랜드의 철학자 [존 윌킨스]가 저서 『진정한 문자 및 철학적 언어에 대한 시론』에서 제안한 보편적인 측정 단위에서 찾아볼 수 있다.[192][193] 1675년 이탈리아의 과학자 [티토 리비오 부라티니]는 저서 『Misura Universale』에서 고대 그리스어의 "μέτρον καθολικόνel(메트론 카톨리콘)"에서 보편적인 측정 단위를 "metro cattolico"라고 표기했다.

프랑스 혁명 직후인 1790년 5월, 시민 오귀스트 사비니앙 르블롱이 길이의 기본 단위에 대해 "미터"라는 새로운 명칭을 처음 제안했다. 그는 미터라는 명칭에 대해 "매우 훌륭한 표현이며, 원래 프랑스어라고 해도 좋을 정도"라고 말했다.[194] 이것이 프랑스에서 정식으로 채택되어("mètre") 이어서 영어의 "metre"가 되었다.

2. 1. 지구 자오선 기반 정의

1790년 프랑스 정부는 전 세계적으로 통일된 단위 표준의 필요성을 인식하고 미터법 제정을 추진했다. 이때 거리의 기준을 지구로 설정하고, 지구 적도에서 북극점까지의 거리를 10,000km, 즉 지구 전체 자오선 길이의 40,000km를 기준으로 하는 미터법을 제정했다.[198] 당시 기술로는 남반구에 관측소를 설치하기 어려웠기 때문에, 적도에서 북극점까지의 거리인 10,000km를 십진법 표준으로 삼았다.

결국 1m는 적도에서 극점까지 거리의 1000만분의 1을 기준으로 하게 되었다. 1797년 영어에서의 최초 사용이 보고되었다.

초기 1m 표준 원기는 금속 물질로 제작되었으나, 온도와 습기 등 환경 변화에 따라 미세한 변화가 있어 미터의 정의는 시간이 지나면서 변경되었다.

2. 2. 미터 정의의 변천

1793년: 남북극과 적도 사이 거리의 1/10,000,000로 정의되었다.[133]

1795년: 황동으로 된 임시 미터 원기가 제작되었다.[133]

1799년: 백금으로 된 표준 미터 원기(아르시브 원기)의 길이를 기준으로 하였다.[135]

1889년: 단면이 X자이며, 백금-이리듐 합금으로 된 국제 미터 원기 원형의 길이를 기준으로 하였다.[135][136]

1960년: 진공에서 크립톤-86 원자의 2p10과 5d5 준위 사이의 전이에 해당하는 복사 파장의 1650763.73배로 정의되었다.[141]

대부분의 영어권 국가에서는 'metre'로 표기하지만, 미국[3][4][5][6]과 필리핀[7]에서는 'meter'로 표기한다. 전류계, 속도계와 같은 측정 장치는 모든 영어 변형에서 '-meter'로 표기한다.[8]

고대 이집트의 큐빗은 약 0.5 m였으며[148], 스코틀랜드와 영국의 엘 (2 큐빗)은 각각 941 mm (0.941 m)와 1143 mm (1.143 m)였다.[149][150] 고대 파리의 투아즈 (패덤)는 2 m보다 약간 짧았으며 mesures usuelles 시스템에서 정확히 2 m로 표준화되었고, 1 m는 정확히 투아즈였다.[151] 러시아의 버스트는 1.0668 km였고, 스웨덴 밀은 10.688 km였지만 스웨덴이 미터법 단위로 전환하면서 10 km로 변경되었다.[152]

6. 국제적 채택

7. 한국의 미터법 도입

조선 말 개항 이후 미터법이 도입되었으며, 1902년 대한제국 시기 도량형을 관리하던 관청인 평식원(平式院)에서 도량형 규칙을 제정하면서 미터법이 공식적으로 도입되었다.[228] 1964년에는 계량법 시행으로 미터법이 법정 계량 단위로 지정되었으며, 현재는 일상생활, 산업, 과학 등 다양한 분야에서 미터법이 사용되고 있다.[228]

2009년 7월 16일 한국은 국가 표준을 광 주파수 콤 장치로 변경했다.[228] 이는 "모드 동기 파이버 레이저"를 사용하는 광 주파수 콤으로, 종래의 방법보다 300배의 정밀도 향상을 이루었다.[228]
