봄에는 캘리포니아주에서 멕시코에 걸쳐서 볼 수 있다. 이들은 세대 교체를 반복하면서 점차 북상하여 여름이 되면 북아메리카 중부까지 도달한다. 그리고 8월경, 북아메리카 중부에서 우화한 개체가 남하를 시작한다. 이 세대는 많은 꽃에서 꿀을 빨아들여 체내에 지방을 다량 축적한다. 이 지방을 에너지원으로 하여 봄에 이동이 시작되었던 캘리포니아에서 멕시코에 걸친 지역을 목표로 한다. 로키산맥 동쪽에서는 멕시코 미초아칸주에서 월동하고, 서쪽에서는 캘리포니아주 중부에서 남부에서 월동한다. 10월경에는 이 지역의 삼림 지대에서 나무 가지에 잔뜩 매달린 모나크나비를 볼 수 있다. 이러한 나무에서는 나비의 무게로 가지가 부러지는 경우도 있다.
남하하는 세대는 북상하는 세대보다 수명이 길다. 이 대이동에 관한 보고와 연구도 많지만, 대이동의 이유 중 하나로는 "유충의 먹이 식물을 고갈시키지 않기 위해서"가 제기된다.
미국 플로리다주에서 카리브해, 아마존강 유역에 분포하는 *D. p. megalippe* 아종은 이동하지 않는다.
7. 천적 및 의태
제왕나비는 애벌레, 번데기, 성충 시기 모두 선명한 색깔을 띠는데, 이는 포식자에게 자신들이 독을 가지고 있음을 알리는 경계색 역할을 한다. 제왕나비는 다양한 천적에게 잡아먹히지만, 이들 중 어떤 것도 전체 개체 수에 해를 끼치거나 월동 집단 크기의 장기적인 감소를 유발하는 것으로 의심되지는 않는다.
제왕나비 애벌레는 애기풀을 먹고 자라면서 강심배당체(카르데놀리드)를 축적하여 독성을 띤다.[222] 이는 Na+/K+-ATPase 효소의 돌연변이 덕분이다.[83] 특히, ''Asclepias curassavica'' 종은 ''Ophryocystis elektroscirrha'' (OE) 감염 증상을 줄이는 것으로 보인다.[87]
카바이로이치몬지(Viceroy, ''Limenitis archippus'')와 같이 왕나비의 날개 색깔을 흉내 내는 (베이츠 의태) 나비도 있다. 왕나비는 부왕나비와 불쾌한 맛을 공유하는 뮬러 의태의 예시이기도 하다.[90]
8. 인간과의 관계
제왕나비는 그 눈길을 사로잡는 모습과 흥미로운 생태 덕분에 미국과 영국 등 영어권 국가에서 널리 사랑받고 있다. 미국의 앨라배마주,[91] 아이다호주,[92] 일리노이주,[93] 미네소타주,[94] 텍사스주,[95] 버몬트주,[96] 웨스트버지니아주[97]의 주 곤충이다. 미국의 국가 곤충으로 지정하려는 법안이 제출되었지만, 1989년[99]과 1991년[100]에 모두 실패했다.
주택 소유주들은 나비 정원을 조성하여 제왕나비를 유인할 수 있다.[101]
인간은 제왕나비를 사육하고 상호작용하는데, 이는 점점 더 인기를 얻고 있다. 제왕나비는 학교에서 사육되어 요양원, 추모 행사 및 결혼식에서 나비 방사에 사용된다.[107] 9·11 테러 추모식에는 사육된 제왕나비의 방사가 포함된다.[108] 제왕나비는 학교와 자연 센터에서 교육 목적으로 사용된다.[109] 많은 주택 소유주들이 취미와 교육 목적으로 제왕나비를 사육한다.[110]
멕시코와 캘리포니아의 월동지에는 서식지 파괴를 제한하기 위해 보호구역과 자연보호구역이 조성되었다. 이러한 장소는 상당한 관광 수입을 창출할 수 있다.[103] 그러나 관광객이 적을 경우 제왕나비의 생존율이 더 높을 수 있는데, 관광객이 없는 지역의 나비는 단백질 함량, 면역 반응 및 산화 방지 능력이 증가한 것으로 나타났다.[104]
단체와 개인은 표지 프로그램에 참여하고 있다. 표지 정보는 이동 패턴을 연구하는 데 사용된다.[105]
9. 보존 상태 및 노력
겨울나기를 위한 숲이 많이 벌채되면서, 제왕나비는 최근 개체 수가 크게 줄고 있다. 북미 여러 국가에서는 겨울나기 장소를 보호구역으로 지정하는 등 보호 활동을 하고 있다. 캐나다 정부는 본 종을 '''특별 관심 대상'''(Special Concern)으로 지정하고 있다.[220] 세계자연보전연맹(IUCN)은 2022년 7월 제왕나비를 멸종위기종으로 적색 목록에 추가했으나,[152] 2023년 청원 결과 "취약"으로 변경되었다.[2]
미국에서는 제왕나비와 그 서식지를 멸종위기종법(Endangered Species Act)에 따라 보호해달라는 법적 청원이 제출되었으며,[197] 관련 연구 및 검토가 진행 중이다. 미국 정부는 수분 매개자 건강 태스크포스를 설립하고, 연방 토지에서의 수분 매개자 친화적 조경 디자인 및 유지 관리를 위한 전략을 발표하는 등 다양한 노력을 기울이고 있다.
나비 정원 조성 및 "제왕나비 쉼터" 조성 활동이 이루어지고 있으나,[178] 제왕나비의 먹이 선호도와 개체군 주기, 밀크위드 유지 조건 등에 대한 주의가 필요하다.[179]

- 2007년 NHK에서 방영되었고, 2013년 5월 2일에 재방영된 프랑스와 캐나다 공동 제작 텔레비전 프로그램에서 제왕나비의 대이동과 멕시코에서의 보호 활동을 소개했다. 같은 해 10월 24일 NHK BS 프리미엄에서 하이비전 프런티어 특집 「신비의 나비 경이로운 대모험」(神秘のチョウ 驚異の大冒険)으로 재방영되었다.

On September 21, 1983, we published guidance for assigning a listing priority number (LPN) for each candidate species (48 FR 43098).
