2. 역사

2. 1. 중국

명나라 시기에는 베트남, 류큐 왕국 등에서도 환관 제도가 존재했다.^[67]^[68]^[69]^[70]^[71]^[89] 영락제는 1406년 1월 30일 류큐 왕국 사람들이 황제에게 바치기 위해 자녀들을 거세했다는 사실에 경악을 표하며, 거세된 소년들은 죄가 없다고 말하고 그들을 류큐로 돌려보내 다시는 환관을 보내지 말라고 지시했다.^[89]

레 왕조 시대 베트남은 외국과의 접촉을 단속하고 고립주의 정책을 시행했는데, 이 과정에서 항로를 이탈한 중국 선박을 나포하여 젊은이들을 거세해 환관 노예로 삼았다.^[90] 말라카 술탄국 사절들 역시 베트남 해군에 의해 나포되어 젊은이들이 거세되기도 했다.^[91]^[92]^[93]^[94] 1499년 명 실록 기록에 따르면, 하이난에서 광둥으로 항해하던 중 배가 항로를 이탈하여 우루이를 포함한 13명의 중국인들이 베트남에 포획되었고, 우루이는 거세되어 베트남 탕롱의 황궁에서 거의 25년 동안 환관으로 복무했다.^[95]^[96]^[97]

3. 간신과 충신

후한 말 정권을 장악하고 매관매직을 일삼은 10명의 환관인 십상시나, 촉한의 환관 황호처럼 군주의 총애를 받아 권력을 잡고 정세를 어지럽힌 환관들이 있었다. 조선 연산군 때 환관 김자원은 왕명의 출납을 악용하여 전횡을 일삼았다.^[17] 명나라 천계제 시기 대내총관태감 위충현 역시 뇌물을 받고 정사를 자기 마음대로 하였다.^[17]

4. 국부 제거

환관은 궁녀와의 연애 행위를 원천적으로 금지하기 위해 연애 행위의 근본이 되는 신체 기관을 제거해야 했다.^[12] 궁녀는 오직 황제와의 연애 행위만 허용되었는데, 이는 궁녀가 낳은 아이들은 모두 황제의 혈통을 이어받아 황실 계승권을 부여받았기 때문이다. 따라서 출신이 불분명한 아이로 인해 황실의 기반이 흔들리는 것을 막기 위해 이러한 규정이 만들어졌다.

당시 의술로는 국부를 제거할 때 뿌리까지 모두 제거해야 했기 때문에, 수술 과정에서 사망할 확률이 80~90%에 달했다.^[12] 그럼에도 불구하고 환관이 되려는 사람들은 이 위험한 수술을 감수했다.

절단된 국부는 버려지지 않고 작은 항아리에 담겨 내시감의 관리를 받았다.^[12] 항아리 뚜껑에는 국부 주인의 이름이 적혀 있었고, 창호지로 밀봉된 자리에는 내시감의 직인이 찍혀 있었다. 이는 '신체가 온전하지 못한 사람은 죽으면 구천을 떠돌게 된다'는 미신 때문이었는데, 환관이 죽으면 국부를 다시 꿰맨 뒤 장례를 치렀다.^[12] 이러한 관습은 환관들이 자신의 국부 항아리에 직인을 찍어준 내시감에게 절대적으로 복종하게 만들었다.

국부 제거 수술은 요도가 절단되어 극심한 요실금을 겪거나, 몸의 균형을 잃어 종종걸음을 걷는 등의 부작용을 초래했다.^[12]

5. 궁형

춘추전국시대에는 참수형보다 더 혹독한 형벌로 궁형(宮刑)이 있었다. 궁형은 국부를 제거하는 형벌로, 환관을 만드는 작업과 같았다. 궁형을 받은 사람은 사회생활이 불가능해졌다. 이 형벌은 환관이 되는 과정과 매우 비슷했기 때문에 사람들이 궁형이라고 불렀다.^[12]

한 무제 치세의 한나라는 법을 어겼다는 이유로 신장 지역의 로란 왕국의 왕자를 궁궐에 인질로 잡아두고 궁형을 시켰다.^[21] 장안세의 형인 장하(張賀)는 원래 사형 선고를 받았지만, 동생이 형벌 감면을 간청하여 대신 궁형을 받았다. 한나라는 범죄에 대한 처벌로 이연년 (음악가)에게 궁형을 명령했다.^[24]^[25] 이연년의 누이인 이부인은 한나라 황제의 후궁이었다. 한나라는 오손의 "미친 왕"을 죽이지 않고, 대신 그가 병을 치료하도록 의사를 돕도록 한 사신 거두(거투)에게 궁형을 명령했다.^[26]^[27]^[28]
