2. 역사

1998년 8월 델라웨어주에서 설립되었다.[4] 1999년 8월, 데이비드 닐리먼이 "뉴에어(NewAir)"라는 이름으로 회사를 설립했다.[5] 설립자들은 항공사 이름을 "택시(Taxi)"로 하고 뉴욕과 연관시키기 위해 노란색 도장을 사용하려 했으나, 투자자 JP모건 체이스가 항공사 이름을 변경하지 않으면 투자를 철회하겠다고 하여 이 아이디어는 취소되었다.[7]

제트블루는 사우스웨스트 항공의 저가 항공 운임 정책을 따르면서도, 기내 엔터테인먼트, 모든 좌석의 텔레비전, 시리우스XM 위성 라디오 등의 편의 시설을 제공하여 차별화를 꾀했다. 1999년 9월, 존 F. 케네디 국제공항에서 초기 이착륙 슬롯 75개를 배정받았고, 2000년 2월 미국 교통부의 운항증명 승인을 받았다. 2000년 2월 11일, 버팔로 나이아가라 국제공항과 포트로더데일 할리우드 국제공항 노선 운항을 시작했다.[6]

2010년, 남아프리카 항공, 아메리칸 항공과 코드쉐어 협정을 체결했다 (아메리칸 항공과의 계약은 종료).[30] 루프트한자와도 코드쉐어 협정을 체결하여 세이버 예약 시스템으로 전환했다.[31]

2014년, 프리미엄 객실 서비스 '민트(Mint)'를 도입했다. 2014년 4월 22일, 조종사 노조가 결성되었다. 2015년 2월 16일, 로빈 헤이스가 CEO로 취임했다. 2016년 8월 31일, 미국-쿠바 간 최초의 정기 상업 항공편을 운항했다.

2019년 4월, 보스턴과 뉴욕에서 런던으로 대서양 횡단 항공편 시작을 발표했다. 2020년, COVID-19 팬데믹으로 인해 운영 방식을 변경하고 탄소 중립 달성 계획을 발표했다. 2021년 5월 19일, 런던 히드로 공항 및 개트윅 공항 운항 시작을 발표했다.

2022년 7월, 스피릿 항공과 38억 달러 규모의 합병을 발표했다.[240][241] 2023년 5월 19일, 법원이 제트블루-아메리칸 파트너십이 반경쟁적이라고 판결하여 해체를 명령했다. 2024년 1월, 스피릿 항공 인수가 무산되었다. 2024년 2월, 조앤나 게라티가 CEO로 취임했다.

2. 1. 경영

2022년 7월, 제트블루는 스피릿 항공과의 합병을 발표하여 미국 5위 규모의 항공사가 될 예정이다.[240][241]

제트블루는 대부분의 저비용 항공사(LCC)의 특징을 갖추고 운영된다. 예를 들어 연례 보고서에서 언급된 바와 같이,[148] 주로 단일 기종의 새롭고 효율적인 항공기, 높은 항공기 활용률, 지점 간 노선 (여러 항공기 기지 포함), 비교적 낮은 유통 비용, 그리고 주요 항공 동맹에 가입하지 않는 것을 들 수 있다.

하지만 제트블루의 사업 모델에서는 객실 등급을 하나 이상 제공하고, 무료 기내 엔터테인먼트와 간식을 제공하며, 여러 다른 항공사와 코드셰어 협정을 유지한다.

매사추세츠 공과대학교 연구원들은 2013년 제트블루가 시장에 진출한 후 운임이 하락하는 현상을 설명하며 "제트블루 효과"라는 용어를 만들었다.[149]

2014년 1월 현재, 대한항공, 아시아나항공을 비롯하여 여러 항공사들과 제휴하고 있으며, 항공 동맹에는 속하지 않지만, 제휴 대상 항공사들이 대형 항공사가 많고 개별 제휴가 많기 때문에 환승 등에서 편의성을 제공받고 있다.

4. 보유 기종

제트블루는 1998년 설립 초기부터 에어버스 A320 계열(Airbus A320 family) 항공기를 주력 기종으로 사용하며, 정비 용이성을 높이는 사우스웨스트 항공과 유사한 전략을 추구했다. 2003년에는 엠브라에르 ERJ 190 항공기를 대량 주문하여 기종 다양화를 시도했다.[245][246]

2013년, 제트블루는 엠브라에르 ERJ 190 추가 도입을 연기하고, 에어버스 A321neo 기종을 추가 주문하는 한편, 기존 항공기에 샤클릿(シャークレット)을 장착하여 운영 효율을 높이는 계획을 발표했다.[248] 2014년부터는 미국 대륙 횡단 노선에 A321 기종을 투입, 풀 플랫 시트를 갖춘 프리미엄 클래스를 도입하여 서비스를 차별화했다.[249]

5. 서비스

제트블루는 대부분의 항공기에서 '코어(Core)' 객실을 운영하며, 가죽 좌석, 무료 Wi-Fi, 무료 간식 및 음료, DirecTV, Sirius XM 라디오 및 영화를 즐길 수 있는 엔터테인먼트 스크린을 제공한다.[210][211] 일부 좌석은 '이븐 모어 스페이스(Even More Space)'로, 7인치 더 넓은 다리 공간을 제공한다.[209]

  • 2005년 9월 21일, 캘리포니아주 버뱅크에서 출발하여 뉴욕 존 F. 케네디 국제공항으로 향하던 제트블루 항공 292편 (에어버스 A320)이 이륙 직후 앞바퀴 문제로 로스앤젤레스 국제공항에 비상 착륙했다. 항공기는 연료를 소모하기 위해 약 3시간 동안 선회 비행 후 착륙했으며, 승무원 6명과 승객 140명 총 146명은 모두 무사했다.[228]
