2019년 10월 27일, 미국 합동 특수 작전 사령부(JSOC) 소속 제1 특수 부대 작전 분견대-델타 (델타 포스)는 75 연대 레인저와 제160 특수 작전 항공 연대(공중)의 지원을 받아 러시아와 터키가 통제하는 영공을 통과하여 터키 국경과 인접한 시리아 반군 점령 지역 이드리브 주를 급습, 알바그다디를 생포하려는 작전을 개시했다.[169][170][171]

도널드 트럼프 미국 대통령과 관계자들은 알바그다디가 미군 군견에게 쫓기다 터널에 갇히자 자살 조끼를 터뜨려 사망했으며, 그의 어린 자녀 두 명도 함께 사망했다고 밝혔다.[172][181][174] 트럼프는 "그는 개처럼 죽었다. 겁쟁이처럼 죽었다. 세상은 이제 훨씬 더 안전한 곳이 되었다."라고 말했다.[173]

알바그다디 사후에도 IS는 여전히 중동 지역과 전 세계에서 테러 공격을 지속하고 있다. 국제사회는 IS와 같은 극단주의 테러 조직의 위협에 맞서 지속적인 노력을 기울이고 있다.
