2. 명칭

'가비알'이라는 이름은 성체 수컷의 주둥이 끝에 있는 코의 돌출부 모양에서 유래되었으며, 이는 흙으로 만든 항아리를 뜻하는 힌두스탄어 단어 'ghara'에서 비롯되었다. 4. 진화

가비알속(''Gavialis'')은 미오세 전기에 인도-파키스탄 지역에서 기원한 것으로 보인다.[28] 하리아나주와 히마찰프라데시주의 시발리크 언덕에서 발견된 가비알 화석은 플리오세와 플라이스토세 전기로 연대가 측정된다.[29] 멸종된 종으로는 ''Gavialis bengawanicus''가 유일하게 유효한 종으로 인정받고 있다.[32]

5. 형태

가비알은 올리브색을 띠며, 성체는 어린 개체보다 더 어둡다. 등은 20세가 되면 거의 검은색으로 변하지만, 배는 황백색이다.[38] 머리, 목, 등에 있는 골편은 단일 연속판을 형성한다. 등의 골편은 뼈로 되어 있지만, 측면은 더 부드럽고 약하게 융기되어 있다. 앞팔, 다리, 발의 바깥쪽 가장자리에는 돌출된 볏이 있고, 손가락과 발가락은 부분적으로 물갈퀴가 있다.[36]

주둥이는 매우 길고 좁으며, 끝이 넓다. 위턱에 27~29개, 아래턱에 25~26개의 날카로운 이빨이 있으며, 앞니가 가장 크다.[36] 매우 긴 하악 결합은 23번째 또는 24번째 이빨까지 뻗어 있다. 성체 가비알의 주둥이는 두개골 기저부 폭보다 3.5배 더 길다.[36] 이러한 긴 주둥이 때문에 가비알은 물고기를 잡고 먹는 데 특히 적합하다.[3] 비골은 다소 짧고 전상악골과 넓게 떨어져 있으며, 관골은 솟아 있고 나이가 들면서 비례적으로 더 두꺼워진다.[36][40] 103kg의 체중 범위에 있는 두 개체는 평균 물기 힘이 1784N으로 측정되었다.[34]

수컷 가비알은 성적 성숙에 도달하면 주둥이 끝에 속이 빈 덩굴 모양의 코 돌출부('가라')를 발달시킨다.[38] 이 돌출부는 11.5세에 콧구멍 위에서 자라기 시작하여 15.5세에 약 5x가 되며, 75m 떨어진 곳에서도 들을 수 있는 쉿 소리를 낼 수 있게 한다.[39] 가비알은 이러한 눈에 띄는 성적 이형성을 가진 유일한 현존하는 악어류이다.[40] 성숙한 수컷 가비알은 암컷보다 더 큰 두개골을 가지고 있으며, 기저 길이 715mm 이상, 폭 287mm를 초과한다.[41]

암컷 가비알은 2.6m의 체장에서 성적 성숙에 도달하고 최대 4.5m까지 자란다. 수컷은 최소 3m의 체장에서 성숙하고 최대 6m의 길이까지 자란다.[42] 성체 수컷은 평균 약 160kg의 무게가 나가지만 최대 600kg까지 나갈 수 있다.[3][43] 가비알은 가장 큰 현존하는 악어류 중 하나이며, 가장 무거운 수컷은 977kg의 무게로 기록되었다.[54] 6.55m 길이의 가비알이 1920년 8월 파이자바드의 가그라 강에서 죽었다고 주장되었지만, 신뢰할 수 있는 측정은 이루어지지 않았다.[44] 20세기 초에 인도 강에서 7.16m~9.14m 길이로 추정되는 수컷 가비알이 목격되었다.[45]

6. 분포 및 서식지

가비알은 한때 파키스탄의 인더스강, 인도의 갠지스강, 인도 북동부와 방글라데시의 브라마푸트라강, 그리고 미얀마의 이라와디강에 이르기까지 인도 아대륙 북부의 모든 주요 강 시스템에서 번성했다.[40] 그러나 1976년까지 가비알의 전 세계 서식지는 역사적 범위의 2%로 감소했으며, 200마리 미만의 가비알이 생존하는 것으로 추정되었다.[40] 파키스탄, 부탄, 미얀마에서는 지역 멸종되었다.[3]

1980년대 초부터 인공 사육된 가비알을 인도와 네팔의 야생 서식지에 방사하여 개체수를 늘렸다. 2017년에는 전 세계 개체수가 최대 900마리로 추정되었으며, 여기에는 1100km의 강 유역을 따라 6개의 주요 아집단에 약 600마리의 성체와 1200km의 강 유역을 따라 8개의 소규모 아집단에 50마리의 성체가 포함되었다.[2]

7. 행동 및 생태

가비알은 현존하는 악어류 중 가장 수생 생활에 적응한 종이다.[42] 강가에서 일광욕을 할 때만 물 밖으로 나오며,[5] 변온동물이라 더운 날씨에는 물속에서 체온을 낮추고, 추운 날씨에는 햇볕을 쬐어 체온을 높인다.[81] 주로 모래가 많고 습한 해변에서 일광욕을 즐기며, 하루 중 기온 변화에 따라 일광욕 패턴을 바꾼다. 성체 수컷, 여러 암컷, 준성체들이 함께 일광욕을 하는 모습이 관찰되기도 하며, 성체 수컷은 무리를 지배한다.[42]

늪악어(''Crocodylus palustris'')와 서식지를 공유하기도 하지만, 일광욕 장소와 둥지 위치에서 차이를 보인다.[83] 가비알은 얕고 모래가 많은 해변 근처 물가에서 일광욕을 하고, 물 근처 모래땅에 알을 낳는 반면, 늪악어는 모래 해변뿐만 아니라 가파른 둑과 바위를 오르기도 하며, 일광욕과 둥지를 틀기 위해 해변에서 멀리 떨어진 곳으로 이동한다.[84]

가비알은 날카롭고 서로 맞물리는 이빨과 물속에서 저항을 거의 받지 않는 가늘고 긴 주둥이를 가지고 있어 물고기를 사냥하기에 적합하다. 먹이를 씹지 않고 통째로 삼키는데, 어린 가비알은 물고기를 머리부터 삼키고 머리를 뒤로 젖혀 식도로 밀어 넣는 모습이 관찰되기도 한다. 어린 가비알은 주로 곤충, 올챙이, 작은 물고기, 개구리를 먹으며, 성체는 작은 갑각류도 먹는다. 인도 연갑거북(학명: ''Nilssonia gangetica'')의 잔해가 가비알의 위에서 발견되기도 했다. 가비알은 큰 물고기를 찢어 먹고, 위석으로 돌을 삼켜 소화를 돕거나 부력을 조절한다. 일부 가비알의 위에서는 보석류가 발견되기도 했다.[42] 1910년 샤르다 강에서 사살된 가비알의 위에서는 약 10lbs의 돌이 발견되었다.[86]

7. 1. 번식

암컷 가비알은 몸길이가 약 2.6m일 때 성적으로 성숙하며,[42] 사육 상태에서는 몸길이 3m일 때 번식한다.[87] 수컷 가비알은 15~18세에 몸길이가 약 4m에 달하고 가라(주둥이 끝의 혹)가 발달하면 성적으로 성숙해진다.[40] 가라는 물 속에서 소리를 공명시키거나 다른 성적 행동을 할 때 사용되는 것으로 보인다.[88]

구애와 짝짓기는 2월 중순에 시작된다. 건기에는 번식하는 암컷들이 80km에서 120km를 이동하여 번식 집단에 합류하고 함께 둥지를 짓기도 한다.[82] 암컷은 강변의 모래나 펄 둑에서 물에서 2.5m 떨어지고, 수위 1m에서 3.5m 위에 있는 장소를 선택하여 둥지를 만든다. 둥지는 깊이가 20cm이고 지름이 약 50cm이다. 3월 말에서 4월 초 사이에 20~95개의 알을 낳는다.[42] 카타르니아가트 야생동물 보호구역에서는 97개의 알을 가진 알 뭉치가 발견되기도 했다.[89]

가비알의 알은 모든 악어류 중에서 가장 크며, 평균 무게는 160g이다.[40] 각 알의 길이는 85mm이고 너비는 65mm이다.[90] 부화는 71~93일이 걸리며, 어린 가비알은 몬순이 시작되기 직전인 7월에 부화한다. 대부분의 파충류와 마찬가지로 가비알의 성별은 온도에 따라 결정될 가능성이 높다.[42] 암컷은 부화하는 소리에 반응하여 부화 새끼를 파내지만 물로 가는 것을 돕지는 않는다.[40] 새끼들은 몬순 홍수가 올 때까지 둥지 근처에 머물다가 몬순 이후에 돌아온다.[82]

1980년대에 관찰된 사육 상태의 수컷 가비알은 둥지를 지키는 데 참여하지 않았다. 그러나 사육 상태의 수컷 가비알이 부화 새끼에게 관심을 보였고, 암컷은 그가 부화 새끼를 등에 지고 다니는 것을 허용하기도 했다.[91] 참발강에서는 암컷이 둑이 범람할 때까지 둥지 근처에 머물면서 어린 가비알을 지키는 것이 관찰되었고, 어린 수컷 가비알에 대한 VHF 무선 추적을 통해 그가 2년 동안 공동 둥지 사이트에서 둥지를 지키는 우세한 수컷임이 밝혀지기도 했다.[92]

8. 위협 요인

가비알은 20세기 중반 이후 개체 수가 급격히 감소하여 심각한 멸종 위기에 처해 있다. 1946년 5,000~10,000마리로 추정되던 개체 수는 2006년 250마리 미만으로 감소했는데, 이는 3세대 만에 96~98% 감소한 것이다.[2]

가비알 개체 수 감소의 주요 원인은 다음과 같다.


  • 사냥: 가비알은 가죽, 트로피, 토착 의학 재료를 목적으로 사냥되었으며, 알은 식용으로 채집되었다.[2]
  • 어업: 자망 어업의 증가는 가비알의 생존을 위협하는 요인 중 하나이다.[2]
  • 서식지 파괴: 댐, 보, 관개 수로, 인공 제방 건설로 인한 하천 서식지 손실, 토사 퇴적, 모래 채취, 농업 및 가축 방목으로 인한 하천 인근 토지 사용 등이 가비알 서식지를 파괴했다.[2]
  • 중금속 중독: 2007년 12월부터 2008년 3월 사이에 챔발 강에서 발견된 111마리의 가비알 사체에서는 납, 카드뮴과 같은 중금속이 높은 수준으로 검출되었으며, 위장 궤양 및 원생동물 기생충도 발견되었다.[70][95]
  • 기타: 챔발 강의 물 펌프 사용[96], 카르날리 강의 채석으로 인한 자갈 채취, 모래 채취, 무허가 어업[55] 등도 가비알 개체군에 부정적인 영향을 미친다.


사냥은 더 이상 심각한 위협으로 간주되지 않지만, 다른 요인들로 인해 야생 가비알 개체군은 계속 감소하고 있다. 1997년 436마리로 추정되던 성체 가비알 수는 2006년 250마리 미만으로 감소했다.[2]

9. 보전 노력

가비알은 CITES 부속서 I에 등재되어 국제적인 보호를 받고 있으며,[2] 인도에서는 1972년 야생동물 보호법에 따라,[40] 네팔에서는 1973년 국립공원 및 야생동물 보호법에 의해 법적으로 보호받고 있다.[54]

1970년대 후반부터 인도와 네팔 정부는 가비알 복원 사업을 추진해 왔다. 인도와 네팔의 보호 구역 강에는 사육된 어린 가비알을 다시 채워 넣어 재도입하는 방식으로 보존 노력이 이루어졌다. 가비알 알은 부화되고, 부화한 어린 가비알은 2~3년 동안 사육되어 길이가 약 1m가 되었을 때 방사되었다.[2]

1975년, 인도 정부의 지원 아래 인도 악어 보존 프로젝트가 오디샤의 사트코시아 협곡 보호 구역에서 시작되었다. 이 프로젝트는 유엔 개발 기금과 식량 농업 기구의 재정 지원을 받아 시행되었다. 난단카난 동물원에 첫 번째 가비알 사육 센터가 건설되었고, 프랑크푸르트 동물원에서 수컷 가비알이 공수되어 사육 프로그램에 참여했다. 이후 몇 년 동안 여러 보호 구역이 설립되었다.[97] 1976년, 우타르 프라데시에 쿠크라일 보호림과 카르타니아갓 야생동물 보호구역에 두 개의 사육 센터가 설립되어, 강에 방사하기 위해 매년 최대 800마리의 가비알을 부화하고 사육할 수 있는 시설을 갖추었다.[98] 1975년부터 1982년까지 16개의 악어 재활 센터와 5개의 악어 보호 구역이 설립되었다. 처음에는 네팔에서 가비알 알을 구매했으며, 1991년 환경 산림부는 프로젝트가 목적을 달성했다는 이유로 사육 및 알 수집 프로그램에 대한 자금 지원을 철회했다. 1997~1998년에는 국립 챔벌 보호구역에서 1,200마리가 넘는 가비알과 75개 이상의 둥지가 발견되었지만, 1999년부터 2003년까지는 조사가 이루어지지 않았다. 2004년까지 야생 및 사육 둥지에서 수집된 가비알 알은 12,000개에 달했으며, 부화된 새끼는 1m 이상으로 자랐다.[40] 1980년대 초부터 2006년까지 5,000마리가 넘는 가비알이 인도 강에 방사되었다.[99] 그러나 1982년과 2007년 사이에 켄 강에 142마리의 가비알을 방사했음에도 불구하고, 2013년 봄에 강에서 암컷 성체 가비알 한 마리만 관찰되어 방사된 가비알의 대부분이 번식하지 않았음을 알 수 있다.[74] 어린 가비알은 펀자브의 비아스 강에도 방사되었다.[2]

네팔에서는 1978년부터 치트완 국립공원의 가비알 보존 및 사육 센터에서 강을 따라 수집한 야생 알을 부화했다. 1981년 봄에 50마리의 첫 번째 무리가 나라야니 강에 방사되었고, 그 후 몇 년 동안 네팔의 다른 5개의 강에도 가비알이 방사되었다.[54] 2016년에는 이 센터가 5세에서 12세 사이의 600마리 이상의 가비알로 과밀 상태였으며, 많은 가비알이 방사하기에는 너무 늙었다.[100] 1981년과 2018년 사이에 총 1,365마리의 가비알이 랩티-나라야니 강 시스템에 방사되었다.[101] 가비알을 재도입하는 것은 개체군을 유지하는 데 도움이 되었지만, 방사된 가비알의 생존율은 상당히 낮았다. 2002년과 2003년 봄에 랩티-나라야니 강에 방사된 36마리의 표시된 가비알 중 2004년 봄에는 14마리만 살아있는 것으로 밝혀졌다.[57] 2017년에는 이 재도입 프로그램이 너무 늙거나 성별을 알 수 없는 가비알을 비우호적인 추운 달 동안 교란된 지역에 방사하고, 이러한 방사의 효율성을 평가하지 않고 시행되었다는 점 때문에 포괄적이지 않고 조정되지 않았다는 비판을 받았다.[100] 대신 야생 둥지를 제자리에 두고, 둥지와 일광욕 장소를 더 잘 보호하며 가비알의 이동을 모니터링하는 것이 제안되었다.[102]

사육된 가비알을 방사하는 것은 생존 가능한 개체군을 재건하는 데 크게 기여하지 못했다.[2] 방사된 가비알을 모니터링한 결과, 재도입 프로그램이 생존에 영향을 미치는 여러 요인을 해결하지 못했음이 드러났다. 이러한 요인에는 강 경로의 변경, 모래 채취, 강변 경작, 지역 주민의 어업, 그리고 아가미 그물 및 다이너마이트 사용과 같은 어업 방법과 관련된 사망률이 포함된다.[103][104] 2017년에 악어 전문가 그룹의 구성원들은 지역 사회가 가비알 보존 프로그램에 참여하도록 장려할 것을 권고했다.[105]

2023년 5월, 파키스탄 펀자브 지역에서 가비알 목격담이 보고되었는데, 이는 30년 동안의 부재로 추정된 후 파키스탄에서 이 종의 첫 번째 확인된 목격이었다. 이러한 목격에 대응하여 WWF-파키스탄은 다른 파트너와 협력하여 파키스탄의 가비알 보존 노력을 강화하는 것을 목표로 하고 있으며, 목표는 새로 발견된 개체군이 생존할 뿐만 아니라 번성하도록 보장하는 것이다. 파키스탄은 종을 재도입하기 위해 수백 마리의 가비알 악어를 네팔에서 이전해 줄 것을 요청했다.[106][107][108]

플로리다 동물원에 있는 가비알


1999년 기준으로, 가비알은 인도의 마드라스 악어 은행 트러스트, 마이소르 동물원, 자이푸르 동물원 및 쿠크레일 가비알 재활 센터에서도 사육되었다.[110]

유럽에서는 가비알이 체코의 프라하 동물원과 프로티빈 악어 동물원, 그리고 독일의 베를린 동물원에서 사육된다.[111] 프랑스의 악어 농장인 라 팜 오 크로코딜은 2000년에 네팔의 가비알 번식 센터에서 6마리의 새끼를 받았다.[112]

미국에서는 가비알이 부쉬 가든스 탬파, 클리블랜드 메트로파크 동물원, 포트워스 동물원, 호놀룰루 동물원, 샌디에고 동물원, 국립동물원, 샌안토니오 동물원 및 아쿠아리움 및 세인트 오거스틴 악어 농장 동물원에서 사육된다.[40] 브롱스 동물원과 로스앤젤레스 동물원은 2017년에 가비알을 받았다.[113][114] 2023년, 포트워스 동물원은 4마리의 가비알의 출생을 발표했다.[115]

10. 문화 속 가비알

가비알은 인더스 문명 유물에서부터 묘사될 정도로 인도 문화와 오랫동안 관계를 맺어 왔다. 인장과 점토판에는 가비알이 입에 물고기를 물고 물고기로 둘러싸인 모습이 묘사되어 있는데, 이 유물들은 약 4,000년 전 모헨조다로와 암리에서 발견되었다.[117] 기원전 3세기 산치 불탑 기둥에는 가비알 암각화가 새겨져 있다.[118]

힌두교 신화에서 가비알은 강가 여신과 바루나 신의 탈것으로 등장한다.[119] 16세기 바부르는 자신의 책 ''바부르나마''에서 1526년 가지푸르와 베나레스 사이의 가그라 강에서 가비알을 목격했다고 기록했다.[120]

1915년, 한 영국 장교는 케할 어부들이 인더스 강에서 가비알을 사냥하는 모습을 관찰했다. 어부들은 물가에서 약 60cm 아래에 그물을 설치하고 가비알이 햇볕을 쬐러 나오기를 기다렸다. 가비알이 그물에 걸리면 사냥하는 방식이었다.[121]

네팔의 일부 부족들은 수컷 가비알의 돌출부(가라)에 신비한 힘이 있다고 믿고 약재로 사용하기도 했다.[122] 타루족은 가라를 밭에서 태우면 곤충과 해충을 쫓아내고, 가비알의 알은 기침약이자 최음제로 효과가 있다고 믿었다.[54]
