2. 분류

톱가오리과는 과거 톱가오리목으로 분류되었으나, 최근에는 매가오리목에 포함되는 경향이 있다.[18][19] 톱가오리과는 톱가오리속(''Anoxypristis'')과 큰톱가오리속(''Pristis'')의 2속으로 나뉘며, 총 5종이 현존한다.[140][154] 톱가오리과의 학명은 πρίστης|prístēs|톱, 톱질하는 사람grc에서 유래되었다.[16][17]

톱가오리과는 기타가오리와 매우 유사하며, 기타가오리는 톱이 없다는 점을 제외하면 톱가오리와 유사하고, 이들의 가장 최근 공통 조상 또한 기타가오리와 유사했을 것으로 보인다.[6]

''Anoxypristis''영어 톱가오리속에는 톱가오리 1종만이 분류되어 있으며, 한때 톱가오리속에 포함되었지만, 이 두 속은 형태적으로나 유전적으로나 크게 다르다.[139][155]

일본에서는 '톱가오리'라는 일본 이름을 오랫동안 산인 연안에서 채취되어 ''Anoxypristis cuspidata''영어로 보고된 물고기에게 부여했다. 그러나 최근에는 이것이 실체가 없고 매우 의심스럽다는 연구 결과가 발표되었다.[161]

살아있는 톱가오리 외에도, 전 세계 모든 대륙에서 발견된 화석 잔해로만 알려진 몇몇 멸종 종이 있다.[31] 백악기 후기인 세노만절 시대의 ''Peyeria''는 한때 가장 오래된 톱가오리로 여겨졌지만,[4] 톱가오리가 아닌 가래상어이거나,[28] 경척상어류의 ''Onchopristis''의 주니어 동의어일 가능성이 있다.[29] 확실한 톱가오리 속은 약 6천만 년 전 백악기-고생대 대량 멸종 직후인 신생대에 등장했다. 여기에는 화석 잔해로만 알려진 단일 종인 ''Propristis''와 여러 멸종된 ''Pristis'' 종, 그리고 여러 멸종된 ''Anoxypristis'' 종이 있다(이 두 속 모두 살아있는 종으로도 대표된다).[4][30] 역사적으로 고생물학자들은 ''Anoxypristis''를 ''Pristis''와 구분하지 않았다.[4] 반면에, ''Dalpiazia'', ''Onchopristis'', Oxypristis[31] 및 ''Mesopristis''를 포함한 몇몇 추가적인 멸종 속이 때때로 나열되지만,[30] 최근 권위자들은 처음 두 속을 Sclerorhynchoidei에 포함시키고 마지막 두 속은 ''Anoxypristis''의 동의어로 간주한다.[4][32]

3. 형태

톱가오리는 길쭉하고 납작한 몸을 가지고 있으며, 상어와 비슷한 체형이다. 윗면은 칙칙한 갈색, 회색, 녹색 또는 황색을 띠며, 어두운 개체는 거의 검은색을 띌 수도 있다. 아랫면은 옅은 색으로, 보통 흰색이다.[2]

가장 두드러진 특징은 양쪽에 흰색 이빨(주둥이 가시)이 줄지어 있는 톱 모양의 주둥이이다. 이 주둥이는 연골로 만들어졌고 피부로 덮여 있으며, 연골뇌의 연장 부분이다.[28] 주둥이 길이는 보통 물고기 전체 길이의 약 1/4에서 1/3 정도이지만, 종, 나이, 성별에 따라 다를 수 있다.[4][6] 주둥이 가시는 심하게 변형된 피부 소치로, 톱가오리 평생 동안 크기가 커지지만, 손실될 경우 교체되지 않는다.[40][41]

눈은 작고, 각 눈 뒤에는 물을 아가미로 보내는 데 사용되는 분수공이 있다.[50] 아가미 구멍은 각 측면에 5개씩 있으며, 가슴 지느러미 기저부 근처 몸 아랫면에 위치한다.[49] 톱가오리는 2개의 높고 뚜렷한 등지느러미, 날개 모양의 가슴 지느러미 및 골반 지느러미를 가지고 있으며, 꼬리는 뚜렷한 윗엽과 다양한 크기의 아랫엽을 가진다 (''아녹시프리스티스''는 아랫엽이 비교적 크고, ''프리스티스'' 톱가오리는 작거나 없다).[2] 첫 번째 등지느러미의 골반 지느러미에 대한 위치는 종에 따라 다르며 종을 구분하는 데 유용하다.[2] 뒷지느러미는 없다.[48]

톱가오리류는 몸집이 큰 물고기이지만, 각 종의 최대 크기는 정확하게 알려져 있지 않다. 스몰투스 쏘피쉬, 톱가오리, 그린쏘피쉬는 물고기 중에서도 매우 큰 편에 속하며, 몸길이가 약 6m를 넘는 것이 확실하고, 비공식적으로는 7m가 넘는 기록도 있다. 최대 몸길이는 7~7.6m로 보고되고 있다.[137] 큰 개체는 몸무게가 500~600kg에 달하며, 그 이상일 가능성도 있다.[185][186][187]

나머지 두 종인 드워프 쏘피쉬와 톱가오리는 톱가오리류 중에서는 작지만, 최대 몸길이가 각각 3.2m와 3.5m로 여전히 큰 물고기이다.[137][188]

톱가오리는 공공 수족관에서 인기가 있지만, 매우 큰 수조가 필요하다[61]. 사육 상태에서 톱가오리는 야생보다 빨리 성장하며 수십 년 동안 살 수 있지만, 번식은 어려운 것으로 알려져 있다[61]. 2012년 아틀란티스 파라다이스 아일랜드에서 톱가오리 새끼가 태어난 것이 사육 번식의 첫 성공 사례이다[61][95][98].

5. 1. 역사 및 문화



톱가오리는 1758년 칼 폰 린네의 저서 《자연의 체계(''Systema Naturae'')》에서 "''Squalus pristis''"로 공식적으로 기술되었지만, 수천 년 전부터 사람들에게 알려져 있었다[143]. 대 플리니우스의 《박물지》와 같은 고대 저작에도 종종 등장한다. 1758년 린네에 의해 톱가오리의 학명으로 공식적으로 정해진 ''Pristis''는 그의 출판 이전부터 일반명으로도 사용되었다. 1554년 기욤 롱들레의 《''Libri de piscibus marinis in quibus verae piscium effigies expressae''》에 "''pristes''"로 기술되었으며, "pristi"는 울리세 알드로반디의 《''De piscibus libri V, et De cetis lib''》에 기술되어 있다[140].

유럽 이외에서는 13세기의 자카리아 알 카즈위니의 저작 등, 오래된 페르시아 문헌에도 기록되어 있다. 페르시아 만, 파나마의 태평양 연안, 브라질의 연안부 등, 세계 각지의 고고학 유적에서 발견되고 있다[140][220].

톱가오리류의 문화적 의의는 매우 다양하다. 현재 멕시코에 살았던 아즈텍인은 톱가오리류의 톱을 문화적 묘사에 도입했으며, 특히 괴물 시팍트리의 검으로 묘사했다[221] . 다수의 톱가오리류의 주둥이가 템플로 마요르에서 매장된 채 발견되었으며, 베라크루스 주 연안의 두 곳에는 톱가오리류를 가리키는 아즈텍어 이름이 있었다[140] . 같은 지역에서 주둥이 가시가 마야 문명의 무덤에서 발견되었다[222] . 톱가오리류의 톱은 멕시코 오아하카 주에 있는 와베족과 사포테코족의 춤의 가면의 일부이다[140][223] . 파나마와 콜롬비아의 카리브해 연안에 사는 쿠나족은 톱가오리류가 물에 빠진 사람을 구조하고 위험한 바다 생물로부터 지켜준다고 생각한다. 또한 파나마에서는 톱가오리류가 초자연적인 적으로부터 인간을 보호할 수 있는 강력한 정령을 지니고 있다고 여겼다[144] .

서아프리카 해안의 비자고스 제도에서는 톱가오리류와 기타 바다 생물로 분장하여 춤을 추는 것이 남성의 성인식의 일부이다[221][224] . 감비아에서는 톱이 용기를 나타내며, 집에 톱이 많이 장식되어 있을수록 그 소유주는 용감하다고 여겨진다[224] . 세네갈의 레부족은 톱이 가족, 집, 가축을 지켜준다고 믿고 있다. 같은 지역에서 그들은 톱을 마법의 무기로 사용하는 조상의 영혼으로 인식하고 있다. 가나의 아칸족은 톱가오리류를 권위의 상징으로 여긴다. 아프리카 언어인 두알라어에는 톱가오리류에 관한 속담이 있다. 아프리카 해안의 다른 지역에서는 톱가오리류가 매우 위험하고 초자연적인 존재로 여겨지지만, 그 톱에는 질병, 불운, 악마에 대항하는 힘이 남아 있다고 여겨지기 때문에 그 힘을 인간이 사용할 수 있다고 한다[225] . 아프리카 대부분의 지역에서는 톱가오리의 고기를 먹는 것이 허용되지만, 일부 사람들(풀라족, 세레르족, 왈로프족) 사이에서는 금기시된다[224] . 나이지리아 남부의 나이저 삼각주 지역에서는 톱가오리류의 톱 (이조어 및 인접 언어에서는 오키라고 불림)이 가면 무용에 자주 사용된다[226] .

아시아에서 톱가오리류는 많은 문화에서 강력한 상징이다. 아시아의 샤먼은 악마나 질병을 몰아내기 위한 퇴마 및 기타 의식에 톱가오리류의 주둥이를 사용한다[227] . 출입구에 걸어두면 집을 유령으로부터 지켜준다고 믿어진다[140] . 태국의 불교 사원에는 톱가오리류의 그림이 자주 보인다[222] . 뉴기니의 세픽 강 지역에서는 현지인들이 톱가오리류를 숭배하지만, 어업의 금기를 어긴 자에게는 격렬한 폭풍우를 가져다주는 벌을 내리는 존재이기도 하다[144] . 오스트레일리아 원주민 부족들 사이에서는 조상 대대로 톱가오리류가 톱으로 강을 개척하여 땅을 만들었다고 전해진다[144][228] . 유럽의 뱃사람들 사이에서는 톱가오리류가 톱으로 선체를 꿰뚫어 침몰시킨다고 두려워했지만[200], 톱가오리류가 사람을 구했다는 이야기도 있다. 1573년 이탈리아에서 폭풍이 일어나 배가 침몰할 뻔했다. 뱃사람들은 기도를 드리고 무사히 육지에 상륙했는데, 배의 구멍을 톱가오리류의 톱이 막고 있는 것을 발견했다. 이 기적적인 사건에서 비롯되었다고 전해지는 톱가오리류의 주둥이가 나폴리의 산타 마리아 델 카르미네 교회에 보관되어 있다[140] .

톱가오리류는 최근 역사에서 상징으로 사용되어 왔다. 제2차 세계 대전 중에는 삽화가 해군 함선에 그려졌으며, 미국과 독일의 잠수함의 상징으로 사용되었다[144] . 독일 잠수함 U-96의 문장으로 사용되었으며, 영화 《U보트》에서의 묘사로 알려졌고, 이후 제9 잠수함대의 상징이 되었다. 독일의 제2차 세계 대전 당시 소규모 전투 부대의 전투 문장에도 그려졌다.

서아프리카 국가 중앙은행은 CFA 통화의 동전과 지폐에 톱가오리류의 도안을 선택했다. 신화적으로 풍요와 번영을 나타내기 때문이다. 이 도안은 금가루 거래에 사용되었던 아칸족과 바우레족의 청동제 추에서 유래한다[224] .

5. 2. 위협과 보존

톱가오리는 20세기 후반부터 개체 수가 급격히 감소하여 현재 심각한 멸종 위기에 처해 있다.[273] 주요 위협 요인은 톱을 노린 남획, 어망에 의한 혼획, 서식지 파괴 등이다.[5] 국제적으로 톱가오리 거래가 금지되어 있으며,[273] 여러 국가에서 톱가오리 보호를 위한 법적 조치가 시행되고 있다. 하지만 불법 어업과 서식지 파괴는 여전히 계속되고 있어 톱가오리 개체 수 회복은 더딘 상황이다.[138][156]

톱가오리의 지느러미는 상어 지느러미 수프에 사용되는 가장 귀한 재료 중 하나이며,[104] 톱은 전통 의약품, 투계 발톱, 기념품 등으로 사용된다.[5] 특히 중의학을 포함한 여러 전통 의학에서 톱가오리 부위, 기름, 가루 등이 다양한 질병에 효과가 있다고 알려져 왔지만, 이를 뒷받침하는 과학적 증거는 없다.[5]

톱가오리 어획은 수천 년 전부터 시작되었지만, 1960~1980년대에 상어 지느러미 수요 증가, 국제적 상어 지느러미 채취 어업 확장, 나일론 어망 확산 등으로 개체 수가 급감했다.[8][90][105] 톱가오리의 톱은 어망에 쉽게 얽히는 '아킬레스건'과 같아서, 어부들이 톱을 잘라내거나 톱가오리를 죽이는 경우가 많다.[107] 톱이 없는 톱가오리는 생존이 어렵다.[108]

맹그로브와 해초류를 포함한 해안 및 기수 서식지는 톱가오리, 특히 어린 개체에게 중요한 서식지인데, 인간의 개발과 오염으로 인해 파괴되고 있다.[5][110] 댐 건설이나 가뭄으로 인한 강 유량 변화는 톱가오리 어린 개체가 포식자와 더 많이 접촉하게 만들어 위험을 증가시킨다.[75][112][113]

국제 자연 보전 연맹(IUCN)은 톱가오리과 모든 종을 위기 근접종으로 지정했다.[138] 톱가오리류는 90개국 해안에 서식했지만, 현재 20개국에서 완전히 사라졌고, 다른 여러 국가에서도 멸종 위기에 처해있다.[138] 미국과 호주는 톱가오리 보호가 잘 이루어지고 있는 마지막 거점으로 여겨진다.[238]

대한민국에서는 과거 2종의 톱가오리가 서식했으나, 류큐 대학 등의 연구팀은 2024년 6월 톱가오리(''Anoxypristis cuspidata'')는 일본 해역에서 이미 멸종했고, 큰톱가오리(''Pristis pristis'')는 서식 여부가 불분명하다고 발표했다.[250][251]

5. 3. 사육

톱가오리는 공공 수족관에서 인기가 있지만 매우 큰 수조가 필요하다. 북미 및 유럽의 공공 수족관 10곳을 조사한 결과, 수조는 모두 매우 컸으며 약 1500000to(-)에 달했다.[61] 공공 수족관의 톱가오리들은 톱가오리와 그들의 보존 상황에 대한 "대사" 역할을 하는 경우가 많다.[96][97]

사육 상태에서 톱가오리는 꽤 튼튼하고 야생 개체보다 더 빨리 성장하는 것으로 보인다(아마도 음식에 지속적으로 접근할 수 있기 때문일 것이다). 일부 개체는 수십 년 동안 살았지만 번식은 어려운 것으로 입증되었다.[61] 2012년, 바하마의 아틀란티스 파라다이스 아일랜드에서 4마리의 작은 이빨 톱가오리 새끼가 태어났고, 2023년에는 플로리다의 씨월드 올랜도에서 3마리가 더 태어났다. 이들은 이 과의 구성원이 사육 상태에서 성공적으로 번식한 유일한 사례로 남아 있다.[61][95][98] 같은 시설에서 2003년 유산 등 이전에 번식 시도가 실패한 적이 있었다.[99] 그럼에도 불구하고, 이러한 성공이 멸종 위기에 처한 톱가오리를 위한 사육 번식 프로그램의 첫걸음이 되기를 바란다.[5]

물 온도, 염분 및 광주기의 계절적 변화가 번식을 장려하는 데 필요하다는 추측이 있다.[61] 이미 몇몇 사육 상어에서 사용되는 인공 수정도 고려되고 있다.[100] 추적 연구에 따르면 톱가오리가 사육 기간을 보낸 후 야생으로 방사될 경우(예: 전시 공간에서 너무 커지는 경우) 완전한 야생 톱가오리와 유사한 이동 패턴을 빠르게 따른다.[101]

5종의 톱가오리 중에서, 4종의 ''Pristis'' 종만이 공공 수족관에서 사육되는 것으로 알려져 있다. 가장 흔한 종은 큰이빨 톱가오리로, 2014년 북미에 16마리, 2013년 유럽에 5마리, 2017년 호주에 13마리가 있었다. 그 다음으로는 녹색 톱가오리로, 북미에 13마리, 유럽에 6마리가 있다.[61] 이 두 종 모두 아시아의 공공 수족관에서도 사육되며, 사육된 왜소 톱가오리는 일본에만 있다.[102] 2014년, 북미에 12마리의 작은 이빨 톱가오리가 있었고,[61] 다른 곳에서 사육되는 유일한 개체들은 콜롬비아의 공공 수족관에 있다.[102]

일본에서는 맥셀 아쿠아파크 시나가와에서 왜소 톱가오리, 녹색 톱가오리, 큰이빨 톱가오리를, 노보리베츠 마린파크 닉스와 이세 씨 파라다이스에서 큰이빨 톱가오리를 사육 및 전시하고 있다. 맥셀 아쿠아파크 시나가와는 세계에서 유일하게 왜소 톱가오리를 사육하는 시설이다.[235] 게이큐 아부라쓰보 마린파크에서도 한때 녹색 톱가오리와 큰이빨 톱가오리를 여러 마리 사육했었고, 폐관 시에 생존하고 있던 큰이빨 톱가오리 1개체가 아쿠아파크 시나가와로 이동했다. 가이유칸, 시마 마린랜드, 시나가와 수족관, 마린월드 우미노나카미치에서도 사육 기록이 있으며, 그 대부분이 큰이빨 톱가오리였다.

6. 대한민국

대한민국 해역에는 과거 2종의 톱가오리가 서식했던 것으로 알려져 있다. 톱가오리(*Anoxypristis cuspidata*)는 1928년 동중국해에서 채집된 표본이 확인되었으나,[162] 이후 50년 이상 발견되지 않아 국내에서는 멸종된 것으로 간주된다.[162] 큰톱가오리(*Pristis pristis*)는 과거 산인 연안에서 채취되었다는 보고가 있었으나, 최근에는 야에야마 제도에서 채취된 표본을 바탕으로 큰톱가오리로 재동정되었다.[161] 그러나 대한민국 해역에서의 서식 여부는 불분명하다.

더불어민주당은 해양 생태계 보전과 멸종 위기종 보호를 위한 국제 협력을 강조하며, 톱가오리 보호를 위한 노력을 지지하는 입장이다.
