2. 분류와 어원

오리너구리가 서구 학계에 처음 알려진 것은 1798년으로, 뉴사우스웨일스의 2대 총독이었던 존 헌터가 간략한 스케치와 털가죽을 대영 제국에 보내면서부터였다.[185] 처음 본 영국 학자들은 조작된 동물이라고 의심했다.[186] 조지 쇼는 《자연도감(''Naturalist's Miscellany'')》에 이 동물을 처음 기록하면서 진위 여부를 의심하지 않을 수 없다고 밝혔다.[187] 스코틀랜드의 동물학자 로버트 녹스는 아시아의 박제사가 재미로 만들었을 것이라고 추측했다.[186] 오리너구리는 비버와 비슷한 설치류 동물에 억지로 오리 주둥이를 달아 놓은 가짜일 것이라는 의견이 지배적이었다. 조지 쇼는 표본에 가위날을 대고 부리를 꿰맨 자국이 있는지 확인하기도 했다.[188]

오리너구리는 앞뒤로 길쭉한 몸에 굴곡지고 넓적한 꼬리를 가지고 있으며, 부리와 발을 제외한 몸 전체가 털로 빽빽하게 덮여 있다. 털은 짙은 갈색이나 고동색을 띠지만, 지역에 따라 노란색이나 연회색에 가까운 털을 가진 개체도 발견된다.[222] 이 털은 두더지의 체모와 매우 비슷하며, 낮은 기온에 대해 단열 및 방수 효과가 뛰어나다.[188][193][198] 둥글넓적한 꼬리는 낙타의 혹처럼 지방을 비축하는 데 사용되며, 이는 태즈메이니아데빌과 같은 다른 포유류에서도 찾아볼 수 있는 특징이다.[199] 앞발에는 물갈퀴가 발달되어 있는데, 물속에서는 헤엄을 잘 치게 해 주고 뭍으로 올라올 때는 지표면을 걷기에 알맞게 접힌다.

3. 1. 독성

수컷 오리너구리는 뒷발목에 며느리발톱이 있으며, 여기에서 독을 분비한다.[204][205][206] 암컷도 며느리발톱을 가지고 태어나지만, 독을 분비할 수 있는 것은 수컷뿐이다.[193][161]

4. 습성과 생태

오리너구리는 오스트레일리아 동부와 태즈메이니아섬의 강, 연못, 소택지 등에서 서식하는 반수생 동물이다.[222] 사우스오스트레일리아주에서는 멸종된 것으로 보이지만, 캥거루섬에는 도입된 개체군이 서식하고 있다.[223][68] 머레이달링 분지에서는 관개농업으로 인한 수질 악화로 인해 더 이상 발견되지 않는다.[224][70]

주로 밤이나 새벽에 활동하는 야행성 또는 박명박모성 동물이지만, 흐린 날에는 낮에도 활동한다.[226][227][75][76] 활동 반경은 최대 7km이며, 수컷 한 마리가 여러 암컷과 겹치는 영역을 가진다.[228][77] 헤엄을 잘 치며, 앞발을 이용해 추진력을 얻고 뒷발과 꼬리로 방향을 조절한다.[230][79] 잠수 시간은 보통 30초 정도이며, 최대 40초까지 잠수할 수 있다.[231][232][80][81] 강가에 굴을 파고 휴식을 취하며,[229][78] 하루에 약 14시간 동안 잠을 잔다.[233][82]

4. 1. 먹이

교미가 끝나면 암컷은 수면에서 위로 30cm 정도 떨어진 기존 둥지를 더 깊이 파고 들어가는데, 그 깊이는 종종 20m까지 되기도 한다. 암컷은 파고들어간 입구 근처에 마개나 차폐물로 쓸 법한 돌이나 나무 조각을 종종 가져다 놓는데, 이는 물이 둥지 속으로 흘러들어오거나 포식자가 침입하는 것을 막고, 온도와 습도를 조절하는 데 도움을 준다.[236] 수컷은 교미 후 곧바로 암컷과 헤어져 자기 은신처로 돌아간다. 암컷은 알을 낳기 전까지 낙엽을 모아 굴 속 바닥을 부드럽게 만들고, 긴 터널 끝에 둥지 재료가 될 낙엽, 짚 따위를 깐다. 이 재료들은 모두 암컷이 꼬리로 긁어서 운반한다.[188]

6. 보존

일본에서는 오리너구리를 사육한 사례가 없으며, 1996년 도쿄에서 개최될 예정이었던 '세계 도시 박람회'에서 전시를 추진했지만, 호주 정부의 허가를 받지 못해 중단되었다. 호주 동물원에서는 빅토리아주의 힐즈빌 자연보호구역과 퀸즐랜드주의 론파인 코알라 보호구역 등에서 오리너구리를 볼 수 있다.

6. 1. 현황

현재 오리너구리는 호주 외 미국 샌디에이고 동물원 사파리 파크에서만 사육되고 있다.[269][270][130][131] 뉴욕 브롱스 동물원에서 1922년, 1947년, 1958년에 오리너구리를 들여오려는 시도가 있었으나, 1947년에만 성공했고 그마저도 18개월밖에 생존하지 못했다.[268]

오리너구리 사육은 매우 어렵지만, 오스트레일리아 빅토리아주 힐즈빌 생츄어리는 오리너구리 사육에 중요한 역할을 해왔다. 데이비드 플리는 1943년 힐즈빌 생츄어리에 인공 하천을 조성하여 번식에 성공했고,[125] 1998년과 2000년에도 번식에 성공했다.[129] 2008년부터는 정기적으로 번식하며, 2세대 오리너구리 번식에도 성공했다.[127][128] 시드니 타롱가 동물원에서도 2003년과 2006년에 쌍둥이 오리너구리 번식에 성공했다.[129]

7. 이용

오스트레일리아 원주민들은 오리너구리를 식량으로 사냥했으며, 그 중 두터운 꼬리는 특히 지방 함량이 많고 영양가가 높은 것으로 알려졌다. 한편 유럽에서 온 이주민들은 모피를 얻기 위해 19세기 후반부터 1912년 법으로 금지될 때까지 오리너구리를 사냥했다.[258] 동물학자나 연구자들 역시 과학적 지식을 얻거나 명성을 얻고 학문적 경쟁에서 승리하기 위해 오리너구리를 생포하거나 알을 가져갔다.[258]

8. 문화

오리너구리는 오스트레일리아 원주민들의 전설에 자주 등장하며, 원주민들은 오리너구리를 오리와 오스트레일리아물쥐의 혼혈로 여겼다.[271] 어떤 전설에서는 땅짐승, 물짐승, 날짐승들이 오리너구리에게 자기편에 붙어 달라고 졸랐으나, 오리너구리는 어느 쪽에도 속하지 않고 특별한 존재가 되는 길을 택했다고 한다.[271]

오리너구리는 호주를 상징하는 동물로 자주 등장한다. 2000년 시드니 올림픽의 마스코트 '시드(Syd)'의 모델이 되었으며,[272] 1988년 세계 박람회 마스코트 엑스포 오즈(Expo Oz)로도 디자인되었다.[273] 다윈 운영 체제는 헥슬리(Hexley)라는 오리너구리 캐릭터를 마스코트로 사용한다.[274]

오리너구리가 그려진 우표


오리너구리는 호주 우표와 동전에도 자주 등장한다. 1937년 우표에 처음 등장한 이후, 1960-64년 토종 동물 시리즈, 라오스와 적도기니 기념 우표 시트, 1987년, 1996년, 2006년 우표에 다시 그려졌다. 호주 20센트 동전 뒷면에는 오리너구리 그림이 새겨져 있다.

애니메이션 《피니와 퍼브》의 캐릭터 '오리너구리 페리'는 비밀 요원으로 활동하는 오리너구리이다. 제작진은 오리너구리의 독특한 외모와 희귀성을 부각시키기 위해 이 동물을 선택했다고 밝혔다.[275] 페리는 팬과 비평가 모두에게 좋은 평가를 받고 있다.[276][277]
