2. 분포
참매는 북극을 중심으로 유라시아 대륙과 북아메리카 대륙에 걸쳐 넓게 분포한다.[302] 유라시아에서는 아일랜드섬과 아이슬란드섬을 제외한 대부분 지역에서 발견되며, 서유럽에서는 분포가 다소 불규칙하지만, 다른 지역에서는 서식지가 연속적이다.[302] 유라시아의 서식지는 나무가 거의 없는 북극해 해안 툰드라에서부터, 러시아 전역을 가로질러 아나디르와 캄차카에까지 이른다.[302] 남쪽 서식 한계는 모로코 서남단, 코르시카섬, 사르데냐섬, 이탈리아반도의 “발끝”, 그리스 남부, 튀르키예, 코카서스, 천산산맥, 티베트고원과 히말라야산맥 일부, 서중국과 일본에 이른다.[302] 겨울에는 드물게 사우디아라비아 타이프나 베트남 통킹까지 남하해서 목격되기도 한다.[302]

3. 서식 환경
북미와 달리 개발이 많이 진행된 유라시아에서는 밀도가 성긴 소림이나 심지어 도시의 고립된 나무에 살기도 한다.[309][310] 베를린이나 함부르크처럼 숲이 비교적 울창하게 보존된 대도시에도 서식하는 것으로 알려져 있다.[311] 습지나 하안지대가 서식지 가까이에 있는 경우가 많지만, 필수적인 것은 아니다.[312] 울창한 숲이 없는 지역에서는 강을 따라 나무가 심어진 하안지대가 차선책으로서 서식지로 기능할 수 있다.[313]
참매는 모든 고도에서 발견되지만, 일반적으로 고지대에서 발견된다. 저지대에는 울창한 숲이 보존된 경우가 드물기 때문이다. 산맥에 사는 참매는 최고 수목한계선까지 서식할 수 있다.[302] 분포지역의 북쪽 한계는 대체로 수목한계선과 일치하며, 툰드라 지역에서는 배수로를 따라 형성된 왜소수림에 적응하여 서식한다.[314][315]

4. 형태
대부분의 서식지에서 참매의 깃털은 배면은 청회색 또는 갈회색이고, 복면은 회색 또는 흰색 바탕에 검은 줄무늬가 있다. 다만 아시아의 아종들은 거의 새하얀 것부터 거의 새까만 것까지 색채가 다양하다.[302] 북쪽으로 갈수록 깃털 색이 짙어지고 남쪽으로 갈수록 옅어지는 경향이 있지만, 개체에 따라 차이가 있을 수 있다.[302] 장수한 개체는 나이를 먹으면서 서서히 깃털이 탈색되어 배면 깃털이 검은색으로부터 파란색 계통으로 변한다.[302] 새매에 비해 깃털의 색깔이 더 다양한데, 이는 참매의 유전적 다양성이 더 높기 때문으로 추정된다.[317]
보라매라고도 불리는 참매 유조(어린 새)는 대개 배면이 갈색 줄무늬로 되어 있고, 복면은 거의 흰색에서 어두운 계피색에 이르기까지 다양하다. 유조와 성조 모두 꼬리깃에 3 - 5개의 갈색 또는 검은색 가로줄무늬가 있다.[302] 성조는 무조건 흰색 눈썹선이 있으며, 북유라시아에 서식하는 개체들의 눈썹선이 더 넓고 두드러진 경향이 있다.[302] 유조의 홍채는 담황색이지만, 성조는 귤색이 가장 흔하고 때때로 황금색이나 갈색 홍채를 가진 개체도 있다.[302]
털갈이는 3월 말엽에서 5월 말엽 사이에 이루어지며, 수컷이 암컷보다 털갈이를 늦게 시작해서 빨리 끝낸다. 털갈이가 미처 끝나지 않은 암컷은 날개깃에 틈이 생겨 사냥능력과 방어능력이 저해된다. 털갈이에는 4 - 6개월이 걸린다. 꼬리깃이 가장 먼저 갈리고, 그 다음으로 날개깃이 갈리고, 몸깃이 가장 나중에 갈린다.[302]
참매는 새매속에 속한 종들 가운데 가장 큰 축에 속하며, 암컷이 수컷보다 크고, 유라시아에서 크기 차이가 더 크다. 수컷이 암컷보다 13% 더 작고, 극단적인 경우 체격차가 28%까지 벌어지는 경우도 있다.[302] 수컷의 신장은 46cm 에서 61cm, 익장(날개폭)은 89cm 에서 105cm이다. 암컷은 신장 58cm 에서 69cm, 익장 108cm 에서 127cm이다.[302][319][320] 수컷의 체중은 357g 에서 1200g (평균 762g)이다. 암컷은 대략 그 두 배 정도 나가서, 758g 에서 2200g (평균 1150g)이다.[303][302][321]
5. 분류
칼 폰 린네가 1758년 『자연의 구조』에서 처음 기재했을 때 참매는 송골매와 같은 매속으로 분류되었다.[323] 그러나 분자 계통 발생 연구를 통해 ''Accipiter'' 속이 다계통군임이 밝혀지면서, 참매는 ''Astur'' 속으로 재분류되었다.[7] [8] [9]
참매의 속명은 “움켜잡는 것”이라는 뜻이며, 종소명은 “신사의”, “귀족의”라는 뜻이다. 이는 중세에 참매를 매사냥에 사용하는 것이 귀족에게만 허용되었기 때문이다.[322]
참매는 여러 아종으로 나뉘며, 한국에 서식하는 아종은 A. g. fujiyamae로 알려져 있다.
6. 행동
텃세권 내에서 참매는 단독 또는 상호 고공 선회 비행을 할 수 있다. 영역 비행은 일 년 중 대부분의 기간 동안 발생할 수 있지만, 1월부터 4월까지 정점에 달한다.[3][48][14] 이러한 비행에는 과장된 높고 깊은 날갯짓이 긴 활강과 상하 운동과 섞여 느린 날갯짓이 포함될 수 있다.[3] 일반적으로 영역 싸움은 신체적 접촉 없이 해결되며, 한쪽(보통 세력권을 찾는 어린 새)이 물러가고 다른 쪽이 개구리매와 같은 경고 비행으로 접근하여 침입자에게 하얀색 배를 보여주는 경우가 많다. 들어오는 참매가 그 지역을 떠나지 않으면, 방어하는 참매는 약간의 파동이 있는 물결 모양의 노젓기 비행과 목을 왜가리와 같은 S자 모양으로 구부려 머리를 들고 밝은 가슴을 최대한 드러내는 영역 위협 표시를 포함하여 비행을 과장한다. 영역 다툼은 때때로 치명적인 신체적 싸움으로 확대될 수 있는데, 실제 싸움에서 참매는 서로 발톱으로 공격하려고 할 때 땅에 떨어져 싸운다.[14]
참매는 북부 맹금류로서는 비교적 정착성이 강하지만, 부분적 이동성을 보이는 조류이다. 이동은 일반적으로 가을에는 9월부터 11월까지(때때로 12월까지 지속됨), 봄에는 2월부터 4월까지 일어난다. 봄철 이동은 가을철 이동보다 규모가 작고 잘 알려져 있지 않지만, 3월 말부터 4월 초에 정점에 달하는 것으로 보인다. 북쪽으로 캐나다 북부와 중앙 스칸디나비아까지 북쪽에 있는 일부 개체는 겨울 내내 자신의 서식지에 머무를 수 있다.[3][14][50][51] 북부 페노스칸디아 출신 참매는 최초 포획 장소로부터 최대 1640km 떨어진 곳에서 기록되었지만, 성체는 여름 서식 범위로부터 300km 이상 떨어진 곳에서 발견되는 경우는 드물다. 중앙유럽에서는 몇몇 개체만이 일년 내내 30km 이상 이동하고, 몇몇 어린 새들은 예외적으로 300km까지 이동한 기록이 있다.[3] 유라시아에서는 소수의 이동하는 참매가 가을에 지브롤터 해협과 보스포루스 해협을 건너지만, 더 동쪽에서는 북부 이란과 남부 투르크메니아에서 아랄 호와 발카시 호까지, 카슈미르에서 아삼까지, 극북서부 태국, 북부 베트남, 중국 남부, 타이완, 류큐 열도 및 대한민국까지 겨울 서식 범위가 더 크게 확장될 수 있다.[3][14][55]
6. 1. 섭식
참매는 뛰어난 사냥꾼으로, 다양한 조류와 포유류를 사냥한다. 비둘기, 까마귀, 꿩, 뇌조, 다람쥐, 토끼 등이 주요 먹이이며, 때로는 뱀이나 곤충을 잡아먹기도 한다.[70][14] 사냥감을 정하면 집요하게 추격하며, 숲 속뿐만 아니라 도시 환경에서도 사냥하는 모습이 관찰된다.[278]
참매는 먹이를 추격할 때 38mph의 속도를 낼 수 있으며,[3] 숲의 빽빽한 초목을 이용하여 먹이를 매복하여 사냥한다.[56] 짝을 지어 사냥하기도 하며, 한 마리가 먹이를 산만하게 하는 동안 다른 한 마리가 덮쳐 먹이를 잡는다.[14]
6. 2. 생식
참매는 번식 습성과 관련하여 가장 광범위하게 연구된 맹금류 중 하나이다. 성체 참매는 보통 3월과 4월 사이에 번식지로 돌아오지만, 지역에 따라 2월 초에도 돌아온다.[20][14] 먹이의 양이 많으면 성체는 일 년 내내 번식지에 머물 수 있다.[202] 대부분의 번식 활동은 4월에서 7월 사이에 일어나지만, 예외적으로 한 달 정도 더 일찍 또는 늦게 일어나기도 한다.[3]

포란 기간은 28~37일이며(알의 크기가 매우 큰 경우에는 드물게 최대 41일까지 걸릴 수도 있음), 지역에 따라 다르다.[14][222][223] 암컷은 포란 기간 동안 대부분의 시간을 알을 품는 데 사용하며, 수컷은 먹이를 구해 암컷과 새끼에게 제공한다.[12][14]

7. 수명
야생에서의 수명은 다양하다. 사육되는 개체는 최대 27년까지 산 기록이 있다.[302] 야생에서도 태어나서 2년을 넘기면 최대 11년까지 생존할 수 있다.[325] 16년 4개월 된 매에 대한 기록도 있다.[237]
8. 보존 상태
참매는 넓은 지역에 걸쳐 분포하며, 전 세계적으로 그 수가 안정적인 편이다. 하지만, 서식지가 파괴되거나 인간의 간섭으로 인해 위협을 받고 있기도 하다.[3] 특히 19세기와 20세기 초에는 인간의 박해(사냥)와 서식지 감소로, 1950년대와 1960년대에는 농약 오염으로 인해 개체 수가 감소하기도 했다.[3][256]
한국에서는 천연기념물 제323-1호 및 멸종위기 야생생물 2급으로 지정하여 보호하고 있다. 일본에서는 1993년 종보전법에 따라 "희귀 야생 동·식물종"으로 지정되어 보호받았으나,[285] 2017년 8월 개체 수 증가를 이유로 지정 해제되었다.[287]
9. 문화
참매는 매사냥에 이용되어 왔으며, 한국에서도 전통적으로 매사냥에 활용되었다. 인덕 천황 시대에는 이미 매사냥이 행해지고 있었지만, 초기에는 많은 작은 새를 잡을 수 있는 매나 수리가 사용되었다. 16세기에 자신의 몸집보다 큰 두루미나 꿩을 잡는 데 참매를 사용하는 매사냥이 행해졌고, 에도 시대 중기에는 성행하였다.[282] 도쿠가와 이에미쓰도 매사냥을 즐겨 했다는 일화가 전해진다. 현재는 야생 조류 보호를 위해 참매 포획이 금지되어 있다.[284]
포르투갈령 아조레스 제도의 기와 문장에 참매가 등장한다. '아조레스'라는 이름 자체가 포르투갈 탐험가들이 섬에서 참매(açorpt)를 봤다고 붙인 이름이다. 그러나 아조레스에 사는 맹금류는 참매가 아니라 솔개 또는 말똥가리였음이 나중에 밝혀졌다.

9. 1. 매사냥
