시크교의 역사는 창시자 구루 나낙의 가르침에서 시작되어, 무굴 제국과의 갈등, 시크 왕국의 흥망성쇠, 영국 식민지 시대, 인도 분할, 그리고 현대 인도에서의 발전 과정을 거쳐왔다.

초기에는 평화로운 종교 공동체였으나, 무굴 제국의 박해로 인해 군사적인 성격을 띠게 되었다. 18세기에는 란지트 싱이 시크 왕국을 세워 펀자브 지역을 통일했지만, 영국과의 전쟁에서 패배하며 식민 지배를 받게 되었다. 1947년 인도 분할은 시크교도들에게 큰 고통을 안겨주었으며, 이후 독립 국가 건설을 위한 움직임도 있었다.

나나크(1469∼1539)는 라호르 근처에서 태어났으며, 하급 카스트인 카트리 출신이다. 30세 경에 신의 계시를 받아 전도생활에 들어갔다. 널리 인도 각지와 메카를 순례하면서 힌두교와 이슬람교 설교자들과 종교 문답을 벌였다. 구루 나낙은 메카, 로마, 스리랑카, 티베트를 여행하면서 반드 차코 (Vand Chakko: 남들과 나누고, 곤경에 있는 사람들을 돕는다), 키랏 카로 (Kirat Karo: 돈을 정직하게, 착취하거나 거짓없이 버는 것), 나암 자프나 (Naam Japna: 성스러운 이름을 외치면서 신을 언제나 기억하는 것; 신을 향한 끊임없는 헌신) 등의 원칙을 가르쳤다. 그는 힌두교의 번잡한 카스트, 미신, 종교 의식을 배격하고, 인간의 절대 평등을 주장하였기 때문에 신도 중에는 하급 카스트 출신이 많았다. 창시자의 지위는 구루 칭호를 갖고 후계자에게 계승되었다.

5대 구루 아르준은 모든 이에게 열려있는 하르만디르 사히브(황금 사원)을 암리차르에 세웠다. 그는 시크교 경전인 '그란트'를 편찬했는데, 이는 창시자 나나크를 비롯한 구루들의 언행록을 집성한 것이다. 5대 구루는 이슬람교도들에 의해 처형되었다.[417]

2. 2. 무굴 제국과의 갈등

무굴 제국과의 갈등은 6대 구루 하르고빈드 시대부터 본격화되었다. 5대 구루 아르잔은 무굴 제국에 의해 처형되었는데[417], 이는 시크교단이 군사적 성격을 띠게 되는 계기가 되었다. 하르고빈드는 종교적 지배권(피리) 외에 세속적 지배권(미리)을 선언하며 무굴 제국에 대한 저항을 이끌었다. 그는 자한기르 황제에 의해 일시적으로 구금되기도 했다.

9대 구루 테그 바하두르는 이슬람으로 개종을 거부한 카슈미르의 브라만들을 돕다가 델리에서 처형되었다.[236][237][238][197][239][240][241][242][243] 이 사건은 박해에 맞서 싸우고 약자를 보호하는 시크교의 성전사(산티 시파히, ਸੰਤ ਸਿਪਾਹੀpa) 개념에 영향을 주었다.

10대 구루 고빈드 싱은 칼사(Khalsa)라는 무장 공동체를 창설하여 무굴 제국에 저항했다.[246][97][120] 그는 힌두교의 계급 제도를 거부하고 모든 시크교도에게 평등을 부여했으며, 칼사를 통해 종교적 목적과 군사적 의무를 결합한 공동체를 만들었다.

2. 3. 시크 왕국과 영국 식민지 시대

18세기 말, 란지트 싱은 미슬(시크교 소국)들을 통합하여 시크 왕국을 건국했다.[419] 란지트 싱은 1801년 수도를 라호르에 정하고 시크 왕국을 세웠으며, 펀자브 지방을 근거지로 서유럽식 군대를 편성하여 영국 세력과 항쟁하였다.[420] 그는 사틀레지 강 서쪽의 시크교 지역을 통일하고, 무르탄과 카슈미르까지 세력을 확장하여 전성기를 맞았다.

그러나 1839년 란지트 싱이 사망하자 후계자 분쟁으로 내부 혼란이 발생했고, 영국은 이 틈을 타 개입했다. 1845년 시크 전쟁이 발발했고,[420] 1845-46년의 제1차 시크 전쟁에서 시크 왕국은 패배하여 라호르 조약에 따라 카슈미르와 펀자브 동쪽 절반을 영국에 할양했다.

영국 지배에 대한 민중 반란으로 1848년 제2차 시크 전쟁이 발발했으나, 1849년 시크 측의 패배로 펀자브 전역이 영국령이 되면서 시크 왕국은 멸망했다.[420] 이로써 인도 아대륙은 완전히 영국의 식민지가 되었다.[420]

세포이 항쟁에서 시크교도들은 영국 정부에 협력했다. 이후 시크교도들은 식민지 정부로부터 중간 지배층으로 대우받으며 영국과의 협조 노선을 통해 번영했다. 1920년에는 시크교 정치 단체인 아칼리 달이 결성되었다.[422]

2. 4. 인도 분할과 현대

1947년 인도 분할은 시크교 역사에 큰 상처를 남겼다. 분할 이전 시크교도들은 인도 북서부 지역에 널리 퍼져 살았으나, 분할선(래드클리프 라인)으로 인해 서펀자브 지역에 살던 시크교도들은 조직적인 폭력과 폭동을 피해 인도로 대거 이주해야 했다.[272] 시크교도들은 전인도 무슬림 연맹의 파키스탄 건국 주장에 강력히 반대했는데, 이는 과거 시크 제국의 영토였던 지역에서 무슬림 지배가 영속화되고 반(反)시크 정책이 시행될 것을 우려했기 때문이었다.[270]

분할 과정에서 시크교도들은 막대한 인명 및 재산 피해를 입었다. 서파키스탄에서 시크교도와 힌두교도들은 조직적인 폭력의 대상이 되었으며, 반대로 동쪽으로 이동하는 시크교도들은 무슬림들에게 보복 폭력을 가하기도 했다.[271] 이 과정에서 수많은 시크교 여성들이 강간당하거나 집단 자살을 선택했고, 포로로 잡혔다가 구출되는 등 비극적인 사건들이 발생했다.[273]

1980년대 초, 일부 시크교 단체들은 인도와 파키스탄으로부터 분리된 독립 국가 칼리스탄(Khalistan) 건설을 주장하며 무장 투쟁을 벌였다.[274] 이들은 황금 사원과 아칼 타크트를 점거하고 무장 활동을 전개했다.[274] 1984년 6월, 인디라 간디 인도 총리는 블루스타 작전을 통해 시크교 분리주의 운동을 진압했다.[274] 이 과정에서 자르나일 싱 브힌드란왈레를 비롯한 많은 사람들이 사망하고, 아칼 타크트와 시크교 참고 도서관이 파괴되는 등 큰 피해가 발생했다.[274]

블루스타 작전은 시크교도들의 격렬한 반발을 불러일으켰고, 1984년 10월 31일 인디라 간디 총리가 시크교 경호원에게 암살당하는 사건으로 이어졌다. 이 암살은 1984년 반시크교 폭동을 촉발시켜 인도 전역에서 시크교도들이 박해받는 결과를 낳았다.[276]

3. 교리

시크교는 유일신 와헤구루(Waheguru)를 믿으며, 신은 형태가 없고 시간을 초월하며 창조주라고 믿는다. 시크교는 다른 종교와 신념을 용인하고 종교적, 사회적 평등을 추구한다.[10][11] 시크교 dharm에는 사제나 수도승, 요기가 없으며, 예배당은 모두를 받아들인다.

시크교의 기본은 구루 나낙과 그의 계승자들의 가르침에 있다.[16][17] 시크교의 주요 경전 대부분은 구르무키(Gurmukhi) 알파벳으로 쓰여졌는데, 이는 현재 파키스탄과 북인도에서 역사적으로 사용되던 란다 문자를 기반으로 구루 안가드에 의해 표준화된 문자이다.[10][11] 시크교 신자들은 ''시크(Sikhs)''로 알려져 있으며, 이는 구루의 "학생" 또는 "제자"를 의미한다.

시크교의 교리는 종교 지도자 구루 나낙(Guru Nanak)의 저서인 『구루 그란트 사히브』(Guru Granth Sahib)와 그 안에 포함된 『자프지』(Japji) 등의 시가를 통해 전해지고 있으며, 신앙심 깊은 신자들은 매일 이들을 낭송한다. 구루 나낙은 자신의 작품을 통해 참된 종교는 의례나 형식과 같은 외면적인 것에 집착하는 것을 넘어선 곳에 있다고 하며, “이크 오나카르(ik onakar)”(신은 하나이다)라는 메시지를 반복함으로써 신의 불가분성을 설파하고 있다.

신에게는 여러 가지 이름이 있으며, 각 종교마다 표현 방식의 차이는 있지만, 모든 종교의 본질은 하나이며, 교리 상에서는 다른 종교를 배척하지 않는다. 다만, 다른 종교에 대한 비판을 전혀 하지 않는 것은 아니며, 나낙은 힌두교와 이슬람교의 형식화, 형식, 의례, 관습, 고행을 비판하고 있다. 그와 동시에 “경전으로 돌아가라”고 주장하며, 종교 지도자나 성서 해석가에 의해 만들어진 이차적인 종교로부터 벗어나 본래의 가르침으로 돌아가야 한다는 신념을 가지고 있다.

시크교도는 항상 신의 본질과 존재(Naam)를 되새기며 가정 생활과 연결시키는 것을 요구받는다. 의식, 우상숭배, 고행, 요가(하타 요가 의미), 카스트, 출가, 미신을 부정하고, 세속적인 직업에 종사하여 진지하게 노력하는 것을 중시한다. 계율은 창시자 시대에는 없었지만, 10대 구루 고빈드 싱(Guru Gobind Singh)에 의해 담배, 알코올 음료, 마약이 금지되었다. 육식은 본인의 자유에 맡겨져 있다. 사원에서의 식사는 채식주의자에 대한 존중을 표하기 위해 고기는 제공되지 않는다.

3. 1. 신앙

시크교에는 독단적인 신조가 없으며, 진실을 추구하고 명상을 통해 깨달음을 얻는 것을 중요하게 여긴다. 시크교의 목표는 신과 하나 되는 것이며, 신의 이름(와헤구루)을 되뇌며 신의 존재에 헌신하는 것을 강조한다.[10][11] 시크교의 기본은 구루 나낙과 그의 계승자들의 가르침에 있으며,[16][17] 시크교 윤리는 영적 발전과 일상적인 도덕적 행실 사이의 일치를 강조한다. 창시자인 구루 나낙은 "진실은 최고의 미덕이지만, 진실된 삶은 그보다 더 높습니다."라고 요약했다.[25]

시크교는 성별에 따른 종교적 의무를 구분하지 않는다. 시크교에서 신은 성별이 없으며, 시크교 경전은 여성을 차별하거나 어떤 역할에서도 배제하지 않는다.[93]

3. 2. 윤리

시크교 윤리는 영적 발전과 일상적인 도덕적 행실의 일치를 강조한다. 창시자인 구루 나낙은 "진실은 최고의 미덕이지만, 진실된 삶은 그보다 더 높습니다."라고 요약했다.[25] 시크교는 “하나의 빛으로부터 온 우주가 솟아났다”는 점을 강조한다.[18]

구루 나낙은 제자들에게 실제 사례를 들어 가르침을 강조했다. 일시적인 환상 또는 "현실감 상실"로 정의되는 ''마야''는 신과 구원 추구에서 핵심적인 벗어남 중 하나이다. 세상의 유혹은 오직 환상적인 일시적인 만족과 고통만을 주어 신에 대한 헌신 과정에서 주의를 흩뜨린다. 그러나 나낙은 마야가 세상의 비현실성을 가리키는 것이 아니라 그 가치를 가리키는 것이라고 강조했다.

시크교에서 아한카르, 크로드, 롭, 모흐, 캄의 영향, 이른바 ''판지 초르''('다섯 도둑')는 특히 주의를 흩뜨리고 해로운 것으로 여겨진다. 다섯 도둑에 취약한 사람들의 운명은 신으로부터의 분리이며, 이러한 상황은 집중적이고 끊임없는 헌신 후에만 개선될 수 있다.[30]

구루 나낙에 따르면, 인생의 최고 목적은 '아칼'(Akal, 시대를 초월한 자)과 재결합하는 것이다. 그러나 이러한 연결을 맺는 데 있어 가장 큰 장벽은 자아도취이다. 구루의 가르침을 사용하여 'Naam'(주님의 신성한 이름)[31][79]을 묵상하면 자아도취가 끝난다.

시크교의 기본 수행은 심란 (종교적 명상)과 세와 (봉사)를 행함으로써 필요없는 자존심을 줄이고 다섯 가지의 악에 빠지는 걸 방지하는 것이다. 다섯 가지 악은 다음과 같다.

  • 오만
  • 욕망
  • 탐욕
  • 분노
  • 집착

3. 3. 주요 경전

시크교의 주요 경전은 『구루 그란트 사히브』(Guru Granth Sahib)이며, 『아디 그란트』(Ādi Granth)라고도 불린다.[109] 구루 그란트 사히브는 시크교에서 가장 중요한 경전이지만, 『다삼 그란트』(Dasam Granth)는 많은 시크교도들에게 부차적인 경전으로 여겨진다.[109]

  • '''구루 그란트 사히브''': 시크교의 성스러운 경전이며 살아있는 구루로 여겨진다. 1708년 구루 고빈드 싱은 구루 그란트 사히브를 영원한 구루로 선언했다.[97] 구루 나낙의 시를 모아 만든 책으로 시작되었으며, 1678년에 구루 고빈드 싱이 구루 테그 바하두르의 찬송가를 추가하여 최종본을 편찬했다. [109] 일곱 명의 시크교 구루(구루 나낙, 구루 앙가드, 구루 아마르 다스, 구루 람 다스, 구루 아르잔, 구루 테그 바하두르, 구루 고빈드 싱)의 작품과 힌두교 바크티 운동의 13명의 성인(라마난다, 남데브 등)과 두 명의 무슬림 성인(카비르, 셰이크 파리드)의 가르침을 담고 있다.[33][113] 6,000개의 ''śabads''(시구)[109]로 구성되어 있으며, 고대 북인도 고전 음악의 리듬에 맞춰 낭송된다.[119] 경전은 60개의 ''rāgas''로 분류되며, 각 라가는 길이와 저자에 따라 세분화된다.[109]

경전의 주요 언어는 산트 바샤(Sant Bhāṣā)이며, 펀자브어와 힌디어와 관련이 있고 중세 북부 인도에서 바크티 지지자들이 사용했다.[120] 구르무키 문자로 기록되었으며, 구루 앙가드가 개발했다.[109]

구루 그란트 사히브는 이크 온카르(Ik Oankar)로 시작하며, 뮬 만타르는 다음과 같다.

  • '''아디 그란트''': 1603년에서 1604년 사이에 구루 아르잔의 감독하에 바이 구르다스가 편찬했다.[110] 구르무키(Gurmukhī) 문자로 쓰여졌으며, 당시 펀자브에서 사용되던 란다 문자에서 유래했다.[111] 시크교 구루들의 찬송가와 가르침, 중세 인도의 바크티 운동 전통의 힌두교도 13명과 무슬림 2명의 바가트(bhagat)들의 가르침을 포함한다.[112]

  • '''다삼 그란트''': 구루 고빈드 싱에게 귀속되는 텍스트를 담고 있지만, 학자들은 구루 사후에 쓰여진 것으로 본다.[137] 주로 푸라나(Puranas)의 힌두교 신화와 세속적인 이야기인 '차리트로 파키얀(Charitro Pakhyan)'을 담고 있다.[138][139] 진위 여부는 시크교 내에서 논란이 되고 있다.

4. 종파

시크교에는 여러 종파가 존재하며, 이들은 다양한 믿음과 관행을 가지고 있다.[291][302] 주요 역사적 분파로는 우다시, 니르말라, 나낙판티, 칼사, 사하즈다리, 남다리 쿠카, 니란카리, 사르바리아 등이 있다.[292]

특히 중요한 종파는 다음과 같다.[389]


  • 니란카리: 19세기에 다얄 다스가 시작한 종교 개혁 운동에 기원을 두고 있다. 명상의 중요성을 강조하며 펀자브 지방 북서부에서 세력을 확장했다. 다른 시크교도들과 달리 칼사를 지지하지 않는다. 시크교 경전에 기반한 탄생, 결혼, 죽음과 관련된 의례를 표준화하는 데 크게 기여했다.
  • 아칸드 키르타니 자타: 20세기 초에 나타난 종파로, 작은 케스키라는 터번을 쓴다. 키르탄(찬송)을 중시한다.
  • 남다리파: 19세기에 탄생한 엄격한 종파로, 신의 이름을 반복해서 염송하는 것 외에 다른 종교 의식은 하지 않는다. 머리에 터번을 쓰는 독특한 스타일을 가지고 있으며, 칼사 구성원으로서의 정체성을 강조한다. 다른 종파 사람들과는 결혼하지 않는다.
  • 3HO: 1971년 미국에서 설립된 종파로, 여성에게도 터번 착용을 의무화한다. 신자의 대부분은 백인 미국인이며, 명상과 쿤달리니 요가를 중시한다. 쿤달리니 요가는 힌두교에서 유래한 것으로 시크교 교리에는 없기 때문에 이단으로 보는 시각도 있다.


이 외에도 우다시와 미나와 같이 초기 시크교 분파도 존재하며, 람라이야 분파는 무굴 제국의 후원으로 성장하기도 했다.[303] 19세기에 남다리와 니란카리 분파는 순수한 시크교 형태로의 개혁과 복귀를 추구했다.[305][262][260]

5. 신자

시크교 신자들은 '시크'라고 불리며, 이는 구루의 "학생" 또는 "제자"를 의미한다.[10][11] 2019년 기준으로 전 세계적으로 약 2,500만 명에서 3,000만 명의 시크교 신자가 있는 것으로 추산된다.[281] 이들 중 90% 이상이 인도에 거주하며,[282] 특히 펀자브 주에 집중되어 있다. 펀자브 주에서는 시크교도가 전체 인구의 58%를 차지하여 다수를 이룬다.[283]

인도 외 지역에서는 캐나다에 가장 많은 시크교도가 거주하며, 전체 인구의 2.1%를 차지한다.[277] 영국에는 524,140명(0.9%),[328] 미국에는 28만 명(0.1%)의 시크교도가 있다.[331] 1947년 인도 분할 이전에는 현재 파키스탄 영토에 수백만 명의 시크교도가 거주했으나, 분할 이후 대부분 인도로 이주했다.[286] 현재 파키스탄에 남아 있는 시크교도는 약 2만 명에 불과하다.[289][290]

인도 사회에서 시크교도는 사회적으로 영향력 있는 종교 집단으로 여겨진다. 무굴 제국 시대에 무장 투쟁을 벌였고, 기술 분야에 능한 사람이 많아 영국 통치 시대에는 관리나 군인으로 채용되는 경우가 많았다. 시크교도의 60% 이상은 농업 카스트인 자트(Jat) 카스트에 속한다.[313][314] 상업 카스트인 카트리(Khatri)와 아로라(Arora) 카스트도 시크교 공동체 내에서 상당한 영향력을 행사한다.

5. 1. 복장과 관습

칼사(Khalsa)라는 신자 집단에 속한 시크교도는 머리카락과 수염을 자르지 않고, 남성은 터번을 쓰는 관습이 있다.[172] 여성도 머리카락을 자르지 않으며, 일부 종파에서는 여성도 터번을 착용한다.[172]

칼사에 속한 남성은 '싱'(Singh, 사자를 의미), 여성은 '카우르'(Kaur, 공주를 의미)라는 성을 부여받는다.[172]

칼사의 싱(Singh)의 복장은 다섯 가지 'K'로 표현된다:[172]

  • 케시(Kesh): 몸 전체의 자르지 않은 머리카락.[172]
  • 캉가(Kanga): 나무 빗.[172]
  • 카라(Kara): 쇠 팔찌.[172]

  • 키르판(Kirpan): 단도 혹은 검.[172]


칼사는 다음 4가지 중죄를 짓는 것이 금지되어 있다:[355]

  • 자연적으로 자라는 머리카락을 건드리는 것.[356]
  • 간통(배우자 외 다른 이성과의 성관계).[365]
  • 쿠타 고기(의식용 고기)를 먹는 것.[357]
  • 담배, 아편, 알코올(술), 간자(대마) 등의 중독물을 섭취하는 것.[370]


시크교도는 결혼식, 장례식 등 다양한 의례를 통해 신앙을 표현한다. 시크교 결혼식에는 ''아난드 카라즈'' 의식이 포함된다.[168] 장례식은 ''안팀 산스카르''로 알려져 있으며, ''키르탄 소힐라''와 ''아르다스'' 기도가 행해진다.[171]

6. 대한민국과의 관계

시크교 신자는 주로 인도와 파키스탄에 거주하며, 대한민국에는 극소수의 신자만이 거주하고 있다.
