2. 분류

검은머리따오기 및 호주흰따오기와 매우 밀접한 관련이 있으며, 이들과 함께 종 복합체를 형성한다. 일부 조류학자들은 이 세 종을 동종으로 간주하기도 한다.[2] 이 따오기들은 혼합된 무리에서 종종 잡종을 형성한다.[3]

1790년, 존 레이섬은 신성 따오기에 대한 최초의 명확한 현대 과학적 묘사를 ''Tantalus aethiopicus''로 제공했다.[9] 1817년, 조르주 퀴비에는 ''Ibis religiosus''로 명명했다.[10] 1842년, 조지 로버트 그레이는 이 새를 새로운 속 ''Threskiornis''로 재분류했다.[11]

3. 형태

몸길이는 65-89cm이고, 날개를 펼친 길이는 112-124cm이며, 몸무게는 약 1.35-1.5kg이다.[89][90][16][17] 수컷이 암컷보다 약간 더 크다.[91][18] 엉덩이에 검은 깃털을 제외하고는 온몸이 흰색 깃털로 덮여 있다. 머리와 목, 두꺼운 곡선 모양의 부리와 다리는 검은색이며 털이 없다. 흰색 날개는 비행 시 검은색 뒷면 경계를 보인다. 눈은 갈색이며 어두운 붉은색 안륜을 가지고 있다.[16] 어린 개체는 더러운 흰색 깃털, 작은 부리와 목에 깃털이 있고, 녹갈색 어깨 깃털과 날개 덮깃에 검은색이 더 많다.[89]

이 새는 보통 조용하지만, 때때로 하다다따오기와 달리 강아지 같은 울음소리를 낸다.

4. 분포

사하라 사막 이남에서 남단에 이르는 아프리카 대륙, 마다가스카르 섬, 이라크 남서부에 분포한다. 과거에는 이집트에도 분포했다. 쿠웨이트와 북예멘에서 미조로 보고되었다.

4. 1. 원산지

사하라 이남 아프리카와 이라크 남동부에서 번식한다.[92][93][94][95] 남아프리카의 일부 개체는 잠비아까지 1,500km 북쪽으로 이주하고, 적도 북쪽의 아프리카 개체는 반대 방향으로 이주한다. 이라크 개체군은 보통 이란 남서부로 이주하지만, 오만까지 남쪽으로, 카자흐스탄과 러시아의 카스피해 연안까지(1945년 이전) 이동하는 경우도 발견되었다.[92][93][94][95]

4. 2. 도입

최초의 아프리카검은따오기는 18세기 중반 이집트에서 프랑스로 수입된 두 마리였다.[96] 19세기에는 오스트리아와 이탈리아에서 처음으로 탈출한 개체가 발견되었다. 1970년대에는 유럽과 다른 지역의 많은 동물원에서 새를 자유롭게 날아다니는 군집에 가두는 것이 유행이 되었고, 이에 따라 이탈리아, 프랑스, 스페인, 포르투갈, 네덜란드, 카나리아 제도, 미국 플로리다주, 대만, 아랍에미리트, 바레인에 야생 개체군이 정착했다.[87][95][97]

일부 연구에 따르면 유럽에 유입된 개체군은 경제적, 생태적으로 상당한 영향을 미치는 반면,[98] 다른 연구에 따르면 유럽 토종 조류 종에 심각한 위협이 되지 않는다고 한다.[99]

5. 생태

아프리카검은따오기는 메뚜기 등 곤충류, 갑각류, 어류, 양서류, 파충류와 같은 작은 동물을 긴 부리로 집어 먹는다. 인간이 버린 쓰레기도 뒤지며, 보통 2~20마리, 많게는 300마리까지 무리 지어 먹이를 먹는다.

번식은 우기나 건기에 이루어진다. 다른 황새목 조류와 함께 최대 2000쌍에 달하는 큰 무리를 이루어 둥지를 튼다. 둥지는 잔가지나 풀 등으로 만들며, 보통 나무 위에 짓지만 바위섬에서는 땅 위에 짓기도 한다. 2~3개의 알을 낳고, 부화 기간은 28~29일이다. 새끼는 머리와 목은 검은 솜털, 몸은 흰 솜털로 덮여 있고, 35~40일 후 털갈이를 한다. 번식 성공률은 낮아 둥지당 1마리 이하만 살아남는다.

번식을 위해 적도를 기준으로 계절에 따라 수백 km를 이동한다.

5. 1. 서식지

아프리카검은따오기는 내륙과 해안의 습지와 갯벌에서 서식한다. 물속이나 근처의 나무에 둥지를 트는 것을 선호한다. 매우 얕은 습지에서 물을 건너거나 부드러운 토양이 있는 습한 목초지에서 천천히 발을 구르며 먹이를 먹는다. 또한 경작지와 쓰레기 매립지를 찾기도 한다.[100][101][29][53]

서식지는 매우 다양하며, 습지, 초원, 석호, 조간대, 도서에서 인공적인 환경인 농지, 하수 처리장, 도시 외곽의 쓰레기 매립지에 이르기까지 분포한다. 때로는 수역에서 멀리 떨어진 화재 직후의 장소에 나타나기도 한다.

5. 2. 먹이

이 종은 주로 낮에 무리를 지어 먹이를 먹는 포식자이다. 먹이는 주로 곤충, 벌레, 갑각류, 연체동물 및 기타 무척추동물과 다양한 물고기, 개구리, 파충류, 작은 포유류 및 부육으로 구성된다.[89][101][102] 긴 부리로 흙을 파서 지렁이와 같은 무척추동물을 찾기도 한다.[102] 때로는 씨앗을 먹기도 한다.[87]

에티오피아의 샤라 호에서 이집트독수리가 깨뜨린 흰펠리컨 알의 내용물을 먹는 것이 관찰되기도 하였으며,[65] 투르카나 호의 센트럴 섬에서는 나일왕도마뱀이 파낸 나일악어 알을 먹는 것이 기록되기도 하였다.[28] 남아프리카 공화국 프리 스테이트에서 둥지 새끼의 펠릿과 위 내용물을 연구한 결과, 먹이는 주로 개구리(주로 ''Amietia angolensis''와 ''Xenopus laevis''), ''Potamonautes warreni'' 게, 파리 구더기, Sphingidae 애벌레, 성체 딱정벌레로 구성된 것으로 보고되었다.[67] 프랑스에서는 성체 따오기가 침입종인 Procambarus clarkii 가재를 주로 먹고, 둥지 새끼에게는 ''Eristalis'' 종의 유충이 중요하다.[28][53] 또한, 겨울에는 쓰레기장에서 먹이를 먹어 식단을 보충하기도 한다.[28]

5. 3. 번식

이 종은 보통 우기에 1년에 한 번 번식한다. 번식기는 아프리카에서 3월부터 8월까지이며, 이라크에서는 4월부터 5월까지이다.[89] 바오밥나무에 나뭇가지로 엮어 둥지를 짓는다. 이 새는 황새, 왜가리, 아프리카저어새, 아프리카뱀새, 가마우지와 같은 다른 대형 물떼새와 함께 나무 군집에 둥지를 짓는다. 연안 섬이나 버려진 건물에 단일 종 그룹을 형성할 수도 있다. 섬 둥지는 종종 지상에서 만들어진다. 대형 군집은 수많은 하위 군집으로 구성되어 있으며 1,000마리의 새를 수 있다.[100][102]

암컷은 한 시즌에 1~5개의 알을 낳으며 부모 모두 21~29일 동안 알을 품는다.[90] 부화 후 한 부모가 처음 7일 동안 계속 둥지에 머무른다.[89] 병아리는 35~40일 후에 둥지를 떠나고 44~48일 후에 독립하며, 부화 후 1~5년 후에 성적으로 성숙해진다.[90]

5. 4. 포식자

케냐에서 사다새의 새끼를 잡아먹는 가장 중요한 포식자는 아프리카물수리이며, 아프리카물수리는 공격할 가장 큰 (하위) 집단을 우선적으로 찾아 공격하지만, 에티오피아와 남아프리카 공화국에서는 위협이 덜하다.[29]

6. 보존

국제 자연 보전 연맹(IUCN)에 의해 "관심 대상"으로 분류된다. 전 세계 개체수는 200,000~450,000마리로 추정되지만 감소하는 것으로 보인다.[1] 이 종은 아프리카-유라시아 이동성 물새 보존 협정(AEWA)의 적용을 받는다.[75]

7. 인간과의 관계

고대 이집트에서는 서기와 학예의 신 토트의 화신으로 여겨져 신성시되었다.[76][23] 토트는 지혜, 진실, 지식, 학습, 연구, 글쓰기, 수학의 신이기도 했다. 신성한 검은따오기는 지구상의 토트의 살아있는 화신으로 여겨졌다.[23] 이집트 전역의 순례자들은 4개 이상의 주요 사원에 수천 마리의 따오기 공물을 가져왔고, 이 사원들은 절정기에는 매년 수천 마리의 새들을 거대한 고대 지하 묘지에 미라로 만들어 매장했다. 약 8백만 마리의 새들이 고대 이집트인에 의해 미라로 만들어 매장되었다.[23] 따오기 미라화는 적어도 기원전 1,100년부터 시작되어 약 기원전 30년에 중단되었다. 이 의식은 후기 시대부터 프톨레마이오스 시대까지 가장 인기가 있었다.[23][79]

고대 그리스의 헤로도토스의 『역사』에는 이집트에서 이 새를 죽인 자는 사형에 처해졌다고 기록되어 있다. 대 플리니우스의 『박물지』에 따르면, 이 새는 뱀의 침입을 막는다고 숭배되었으며, 역병을 가져오는 해충은 이 새를 작법에 따라 신에게 바침으로써 즉시 죽었다고 한다.

이집트의 영향을 받은 고대 서양에서도 이 새를 신성시하거나, 지식·신비의 상징으로 삼는 경우가 있었다. 속명인 ''Threskiornis'' (θρησκεία = 신앙·όρνις = 새)나, 영어 이름인 "Sacred Ibis"는 이 사실에서 유래한다. 토트 신은 그리스 신화의 헤르메스 신과 동일시되었으며, 후세에 헤르메스의 이름이 전설적인 연금술사 헤르메스 트리스메기스토스의 이름으로 이어졌기 때문에, 이 새가 연금술의 상징으로 사용되기도 했다. 현재에도 영국 조류 학회(British Ornithologists' Union, BOU)에서는 본종을 심볼로 로고에 사용하고 있으며, 본종의 로고가 표지 전체에 크게 그려져 있는 BOU 학회지는 바로 그 이름도 "Ibis"이다.

사하라 사막 이북의 아프리카에서 유일한 서식지였던 이집트에서, 본종은 19세기 초까지는 매우 흔하게 보였다. 현지에서의 멸종은 1850년경으로 생각된다.
