음식의 가용성은 어떤 여성 신체 사이즈가 매력적인지에 영향을 미치는데, 식량 부족 국가에서는 식량이 풍부한 사회보다 더 큰 여성 신체 사이즈를 선호하는 경향이 있다.[203][537] 서구 사회에서 배고픈 남성은 배가 고프지 않을 때보다 더 큰 여성 신체 사이즈를 선호한다.[203][537]

BMI는 지방과 근육을 혼동한다는 비판을 받아왔으며, 최근 연구는 신체 구성을 집중적으로 다루고 있다.[143][477] 호주 대학생을 대상으로 한 연구에서, 여성에게 가장 매력적인 신체 구성은 가장 건강해 보이는 구성보다 지방이 적었고, 건강 범위 미만이었다.[143][477]

미국 여성들은 남성이 배우자에 대해 선호하는 마름에 대해 과대평가하는 경향이 있다. 연구에 따르면, 미국 남성은 평균 체형을 가장 매력적인 여성 체형으로 선택하는 반면, 여성들은 평균보다 마른 체형을 선택했다.[538] 이는 여성들이 남성의 선호도를 오해하고 있음을 시사한다.

4. 5. 허리-엉덩이 비율

여성의 경우 0.7의 허리-엉덩이 비율(WHR)은 전반적인 건강과 생식력과 강한 상관관계를 보인다.[210] 0.7 범위의 여성은 최적의 에스트로겐 수치를 가지고 있으며, 당뇨병, 심장 질환, 난소암과 같은 주요 질병에 덜 걸리기 쉽다.[210] WHR이 높은 여성(0.80 이상)은 BMI와 상관없이 WHR이 낮은 여성(0.70–0.79)보다 임신율이 유의하게 낮다.[211] 진화 심리학자들은 여성의 허리-엉덩이 비율(WHR)이 인간 남성의 배우자 선택에서 중요한 요소라고 제안했는데, 이 특성이 여성의 생식 가치에 대한 신뢰할 수 있는 단서를 제공한다고 생각하기 때문이다.[212]

4. 6. 발 크기

일부 연구에 따르면, 대부분의 남성은 작은 발을 가진 여성을 선호하며,[224][225][557][558] 이는 고대 중국에서 전족이 행해졌던 것과 같은 맥락이다.[226][559] 유대교 랍비 문학에서, 랍비들은 작은 발을 여성에게 이상적인 유형으로 여겼다.[168][501]

4. 8. 생식력 주도 매력

여성의 지각된 매력은 월경 주기에 따라 미묘하게 변화하며, 가임기에 여성의 행동과 생리에 일부 변화가 관찰된다.[228][561] G. 밀러(2007)의 연구에 따르면, 랩 댄서들은 배란 시기에 나머지 기간보다 거의 15달러 더 많은 팁을 받는 것으로 나타났다.[228] 이는 배란기에 여성의 매력이 더 높아지거나 행동에 상당한 변화가 있음을 시사한다.[228][561] 봅스트와 로브마이어(2012)의 연구에서는 난포기(배란)에 여성의 얼굴이 더 매력적이라는 남성들의 선호도를 통해, 여성의 배란기에 나타나는 얼굴의 미묘한 형태 차이가 남성을 더 끌어들이기에 충분하다는 것을 보여준다.[228][561]

성적 장식은 많은 유기체에서 관찰되며, 인간 여성은 유방과 둔부의 형태로 성적 장식을 갖는다. 성적 장식에 대한 신체적 매력은 여성형 지방과 관련이 있으며, 매력적이지 않다고 여겨지는 남성형 지방과는 반대된다.[235] 인간 여성의 경우, 사춘기에 에스트로겐 우세로 인해 성적 장식이 발달한다. 여성 골격 조직 주변의 에스트로겐 수용체 활성화는 유방, 둔부, 엉덩이 및 허벅지에 여성형 지방을 축적시켜 전반적인 전형적인 여성 신체 형태를 생성한다.[236] 여성의 유방은 비대칭적인 것보다 대칭적일 때 더 매력적인 것으로 간주되며,[237] 이는 좋은 발달 안정성을 반영한다고 생각되기 때문이다.[238]

사회 심리학 관점에서, 대인 매력은 누군가가 특별한 사람에 대해 긍정적인 태도나 평가를 갖게 되는 경우이며, 이는 그 사람이 잠재적으로 중요한 사람이 될 가능성이 있을 때 발생한다.[243] 여기에는 행동적(그 사람에게 다가가려는 경향), 인지적(그 사람에 대한 긍정적인 믿음), 정서적(그 사람에 대한 긍정적인 감정)의 세 가지 요소가 포함된다.[243][576] 심리학에서는 이러한 세 가지 요소를 바탕으로 대인 매력의 다섯 가지 요소(근접성, 유사성, 신체적 매력, 상호성, 반응성)를 제시한다.[244][577]

6. 매력 지각의 신경 상관 관계

신체적 매력에 대한 인식은 '후광 효과', 즉 '아름다움은 선하다'는 일반화된 추론에 기여한다.[294][295] 아름다운 사람은 더 외향적이고, 인기가 많고, 행복하다고 여겨지며, 이는 어릴 때부터 더 많은 관심을 받아 자기 충족적 예언으로 이어질 수 있다.[294][295] 한 연구에서는 아름다운 사람들이 덜 아름다운 사람들보다 더 행복한 경향을 보였는데, 이는 외향적인 성격 특성이나 증가된 경제적 이점이 행복과 연관되기 때문일 수 있다.[296] 브리티시컬럼비아 대학교의 연구에서는 신체적으로 매력적인 사람들의 성격 특성이 더 긍정적이고 정확하게 식별된다고 밝혔다.[296] 위스콘신 종단 연구는 심리적 웰빙과 매력 사이의 긍정적 연관성을 확인했다.[297]

발달된 서구 사회에서 여성은 남성보다 외모로 더 많이 평가받으며, 미용 행위에 대한 압박도 더 크다.[298] '아름다운' 것은 개인적, 사회적, 제도적 보상을 받는다.[298] 남성에게 가해지는 외모 관련 기대는 여성보다 적으며, 시간과 비용도 덜 든다.[299] 심지어 남성도 미용 행위를 해야 하는 영역에서 "핑크 택스" 현상이 나타난다.[300][301]

매력의 기준은 사회마다 다르다. 고대 중국에서는 전족이, 영국에서는 코르셋 착용이 여성의 매력을 위한 기준으로 여겨졌다.

사람들은 외모뿐만 아니라 성격 특성에 대한 정보를 바탕으로 신체적 매력을 판단한다. 2007년 연구에 따르면, 긍정적인 성격 특성을 가진 사람은 더 매력적으로, 부정적인 성격 특성을 가진 사람은 덜 매력적으로 평가되었다.[302]

신체적 매력은 다양한 사회적 영향을 미친다. 사람들은 비슷한 매력 수준의 파트너와 짝을 이루는 경향이 있다.[303][304][305] 런던 길드홀 대학교의 연구에 따르면, 스스로를 매력적이라고 생각하는 사람들은 그렇지 않은 사람들보다 더 많은 수입을 올렸다.[21] 매력적이지 않은 것에 대한 불이익은 남성의 경우 매력적인 것의 이점보다 컸지만, 여성의 경우에는 불이익과 이점이 동일했다.[306] 다른 연구에서는 신체적으로 매력적인 사람들이 더 높은 임금을 받을 가능성이 높다고 밝혔다.[307] 매력으로 인한 수입 격차는 흑인-백인 격차와 유사하거나 더 컸다.[308] 2020년 연구에서는 매력적인 사회 과학자들이 더 높은 대중 연설료를 받는 반면, 자연 과학자들의 경우 매력적이지 않음이 비교 우위였다.[309]

매력적인 사람들은 더 나은 직업, 승진, 사법 제도에서의 더 나은 대우, 더 많은 관계 선택권, 더 부유한 가정과의 결혼 등의 이점을 얻는 경향이 있다.[24][294][295][311] 매력적인 사람들은 덜 매력적인 사람들보다 더 긍정적으로 대우받고 판단되며, 더 긍정적으로 행동한다.[312] 교사들은 매력적인 아이들이 더 지능적이고, 더 인기가 있다고 기대하는 경향이 있다.[313] 유권자들은 매력적인 정치 후보자를 선호한다.[314] 남성과 여성 모두 신체적 매력을 다른 사람의 "좋음"을 측정하는 척도로 사용한다.[315] 1946년 솔로몬 애쉬는 내현적 성격 이론을 만들었는데, 이는 한 가지 특성이 있으면 다른 특성이 존재한다는 것을 암시하며, 이는 후광 효과로 알려져 있다.[316] 외모에 따른 차별이나 편견은 외모지상주의라고 불린다.[316]

황금비율은 황금 분할이라고도 하며, 고대 그리스에서 조화, 아름다움, 비율의 완벽한 척도로 여겨졌다.[324][325] 모하마드 크루시드 아람, 누르 파리드 모하드 누르, 레하나 바스리, 탄 포 유, 테이 호이 웬 등의 연구자들은 황금비가 다양한 민족 집단의 얼굴 매력에 대한 지각에 기여하는지 검증하기 위한 연구를 진행했다. 18세부터 25세까지의 286명이 조사에 참여했으며, 그 내역은 말레이인 100명(남성 50명, 여성 50명), 말레이시아계 중국인/Malaysian Chinese영어 100명(남성 50명, 여성 50명), 말레이시아계 인도인/Malaysian Indians영어 86명(남성 36명, 여성 50명)이었다. 이 연구에서는 혼혈, 두개 안면 변형, 과거에 치열 교정을 받았거나 얼굴 수술을 받은 피험자는 제외되었다. 그 결과, 황금비와 신체적 매력 사이에는 유의미한 관련이 없다는 것이 밝혀졌다.[324][325]

8. 2. 여성의 이상적인 체형

일부에서는 신체 유형 선호도가 문화와 지역별 미적 기준의 척도이며, 여성에게 결정적인 "이상적인 신체"는 없다고 주장하는데, 이는 끊임없이 변하기 때문이다.[326][327][328] 일부 저자는 신체 유형이 보편적이었던 적이 없으며, "이상적인 여성 신체" 형태에 대한 진화 심리학 연구 대부분이 신뢰할 수 없는 데이터와 이상화된 서구의 성 역할과 같은 외부 요인으로 인해 의문이 제기되거나 반증되었다고 주장한다.[329][330][331][332] 인터넷에서는 커뮤니티가 문화적 규범과 다른 자신들만의 틈새 미적 기준을 만들 수 있다.[333][334][335] "완벽한 신체"는 개인적 선호와 지역 미디어 노출의 문제라는 주장이 있다.[336][337]
