4. 논란이 된 선정



타임지는 논란의 여지가 있는 인물들을 올해의 인물로 선정하기도 했다. 1938년에는 아돌프 히틀러(나치 독일의 총통)를 선정했고,[1] 1939년과 1942년에는 이오시프 스탈린(소련의 서기장)을 선정했다.[2][3] 1979년에는 이란 혁명을 이끈 루홀라 호메이니를 선정하기도 했다.[4]

2001년에는 9.11 테러 직후 루돌프 줄리아니 뉴욕 시장이 올해의 인물로 선정되었으나,[5] 일각에서는 테러의 배후로 지목된 오사마 빈 라덴이 더 큰 영향력을 미쳤다는 비판이 제기되기도 했다.[6]
