2. 시즌 전 주요 변경 사항

2012년 포뮬러 원 시즌에는 여러 가지 변경 사항이 있었다. 우선 캘린더에는 총 20번의 그랑프리가 예정되었으며, 2011년에 있었던 터키 그랑프리가 제외되고 미국 그랑프리가 추가되었다.[424][425] 미국 그랑프리는 텍사스주오스틴에 위치한 서킷 오브 더 아메리카스에서 개최되었는데, 이는 2007년 이후 처음이며 오스틴에서는 최초의 개최였다.

경기 규정에서는 무젤로에서 인-시즌 테스트가 부활했고,[118] 세이프티 카 상황에서 랩으로 뒤쳐진 머신들이 다시 대열에 합류할 수 있도록 하는 규정이 재도입되었다.[132] 또한, 드라이버들이 코스를 벗어나 시간을 단축하는 것을 방지하기 위해 정당한 이유 없이 서킷 경계를 벗어나는 행위가 금지되었다.[114]

기술 규정에서는 블로운 디퓨저가 폐지되었고,[360] 엔진 배기구의 위치, 각도, 형태에 대한 규제가 강화되었다.[363] 프런트 윙의 휨 허용치가 줄어들어 더욱 엄격한 구조 규제가 적용되었으며,[360] T본 충돌 및 측면 충격 구조에 대한 안전성 테스트도 추가되었다.[360]



모노코크 전단 앞부분의 노즈 높이 제한으로 인해, 일부 차량에서는 노즈에 단차가 생기는 독특한 디자인이 나타나기도 했다.[364]

2. 1. 기술 규정

시즌에는 팀들이 "스로틀 오프 블로운 디퓨저"를 사용했는데, 이는 드라이버가 스로틀을 밟지 않을 때 연료를 엔진으로 밀어넣어 배기 가스를 생성하고 디퓨저 위로 배기 가스를 향하게 하여 다운포스를 생성하는 방식이었다. 이 방식은 원래 단계적으로 금지될 예정이었으나, 2011년 영국 그랑프리부터 전면 금지가 결정되었다. 그러나 이 과정에서 여러 팀들이 금지 규정을 우회하려 시도했고, FIA와 엔진 제조사 간의 논의 끝에 원래 규정이 복원되어 완전 금지는 2012년으로 연기되었다.[93]

2012년 규정은 배기구 꼬리 파이프의 위치에 대한 엄격한 제약과 함께 배기구 설계를 규제했다. 이로 인해 배기구는 2011년보다 훨씬 더 높은 차체에서 빠져나오게 되었고, 더 이상 디퓨저 근처에 있지 않게 되었다.[93] 윌리엄스[94]와 메르세데스[95]를 포함한 여러 팀은 아부다비에서 열린 영 드라이버 테스트를 금지령에 대비하여 2012년 시즌 부품을 테스트할 기회로 삼았다.

2011년 10월에는 수정된 규칙에 대한 설명이 발표되어 "이국적인" 엔진 맵을 효과적으로 금지했다.[96] 11월에는 여러 팀이 특정 조건에서 이를 허용하려는 시도에 따라 다운포스를 개선하기 위해 배기 가스를 차량의 일부에 불어넣는 관행을 완전히 금지하는 추가 수정 사항이 도입되었다.[97] 2012년 2월에는 메르세데스가 규정의 허점을 FIA에 알려 팀들이 부분적으로 블로운 디퓨저를 계속 사용할 수 있게 되면서 추가 수정이 이루어졌다. FIA는 이 허점을 막기 위해 엔진의 전자 제어 장치(ECU)를 제어하는 소프트웨어를 다시 작성하여 대응했다.[98]

배기 블로운 디퓨저 금지로 인해 모든 팀은 배기구 출구를 재개발해야 했다.


2012년 독일 그랑프리에서 레드불 레이싱은 FIA 기술 대표 조 바우어가 엔진 맵이 기술 규정을 위반할 가능성이 있다고 지적한 후 레이스 스튜어드에게 회부되었다.[99] 레드불은 특히 중간 속도 코너에서 레드불 RB8이 생성하는 토크와 스로틀이 열리는 정도의 관계를 조작하여 더 많은 공기가 배기구를 통과하여 디퓨저 위로 흘러 더 많은 다운포스를 생성했다는 혐의를 받았다. 스튜어드의 판결에 따르면, 레드불은 기술적으로 어떤 규칙도 위반하지 않았으므로 무혐의 처리되었지만, FIA는 일주일 후 헝가리 그랑프리에 앞서 이 관행을 완전히 금지하기 위해 스로틀 매핑을 규제하는 규정을 다시 작성할 계획을 발표했다.[100]

규칙 변경에 따라 팀은 시즌 처음 네 번의 레이스 중 하나에서 사용한 엔진 맵을 제출해야 했으며, 이는 "기준 맵"으로 알려지게 되었다. 스로틀 맵에 대한 후속 변경 사항은 FIA의 승인이 필요하며, 6000rpm 이상의 토크 출력이 기준 맵에 지정된 출력의 2% 이내여야 한다.[101] FIA가 지정한 "예외적인 대기 조건"이 있는 레이스에서는 추가 변경이 허용되었다.[101]

2012년 1월, FIA는 "반응형 차고"의 사용을 금지했다.[102] 이 시스템은 2010년 로터스에 의해 처음 제안되었지만 (2012년까지 적용되지 않음),[103] 브레이크 캘리퍼와 서스펜션 푸시로드에 위치한 유압 실린더를 사용하여 차량의 차고를 미세하게 조정하여 레이스 내내 최적의 차고를 유지하고 브레이크 제동 시 안정성을 제공했다.[104] FIA는 처음에 이 장치를 합법으로 승인했고,[105] 페라리[106]와 윌리엄스를 포함한 여러 팀이 일주일 후에 금지되기 전에 자체 버전의 장치에 대한 계획을 FIA에 제출했다.

FIA는 나중에 반응형 차고 시스템이 기술 규정 3.15조를 위반한다고 확인했는데, 여기에는 "서스펜션에 의해 생성된 모든 공기역학적 효과는 주요 기능에 부수적인 것이어야 한다"와 "차량의 공기역학에 영향을 미치는 모든 장치는 차량의 스프링이 달린 부분과 관련하여 움직이지 않아야 한다"고 명시되어 있으며,[108] 시스템의 주요 목적은 브레이크 제동 시 안정성을 제공하는 대신 공기역학적 이득을 얻는 것이며, 반응형 차고의 사용은 서스펜션 시스템을 규제하는 기술 규정 10.2조에 따라 이의가 제기될 수도 있다고 지적했다.[109]

2012년 기술 규정에는 차량의 코 재형성도 포함되었다. 2012년 이전 규정에서는 코가 지면에서 일정 높이까지 허용되었지만, 스포츠 코드 개정으로 최대 허용 높이가 55cm(프론트 벌크헤드에서 150mm 앞)로 낮아졌다.[110] 이로 인해 팀들이 차량의 코 어셈블리에 높이 변화가 보이는 "가장자리" 코로 차량을 출시하게 되었다.[111] 메르세데스 AMG 팀 대표 로스 브라운은 이 독특한 코 모양이 "여러 팀"이 2012년 차량의 기반으로 2011년 섀시를 사용하길 원했기 때문에 생겨났다고 설명했다.[112]

드라이버는 더 이상 "조커" 기어 박스 변경을 할 수 없었다. 2012년 이전에 드라이버는 시즌 동안 한 번 5 그리드 페널티 없이 기어 박스를 변경할 수 있었다. 이 시스템은 2012년에 폐지되어 드라이버는 5번의 레이스마다 한 번만 기어 박스를 변경할 수 있게 되었다.[113]

2012년부터 모든 차량은 시즌 전 테스트에 참가하기 전에 의무적인 FIA 충돌 테스트를 통과해야 했다.[114] 이전에는 시즌 첫 레이스 전에만 충돌 테스트를 통과하면 되었다. 2012년 시즌의 충돌 테스트는 이전 해보다 더 엄격해졌다.[115]

2011년 11월 제네바에서 열린 포뮬러 원 위원회 회의에서, 피트 스탑 동안 타이어를 교체하는 데 사용되는 에어 건에 헬륨을 사용하는 것이 금지되었다. 에어 건의 회전 속도를 최대 30%까지 증가시켰음에도 불구하고, 헬륨 사용은 경쟁적인 이점을 위해 계속 사용하기에는 너무 비싸다고 간주되었다.[116]

2. 2. 경기 규정


  • 시즌에 금지된 후, 2012 시즌에 인-시즌 테스트가 부활하여, 2012년 챔피언십의 유럽 구간을 앞두고 5월 1일 무젤로에서 테스트가 진행되었다.[118] 팀은 시즌 동안 15일간의 테스트만 허용되었기 때문에, 무젤로 테스트를 위해 시즌 전 겨울 테스트 일정이 축소되었다.[119]
  • 2011년 9월 FIA 세계 모터 스포츠 위원회 회의에서, 회원 기구 대표들은 모든 FIA 승인 챔피언십에서 이중 황색 깃발에 대한 규정을 수정하기로 투표했다. 수정안에 따르면, 트랙 마셜이 서킷에서 또는 서킷 옆에서 작업할 때 이중 황색 깃발이 표시된다.[120]
  • 타이어 공급업체 피렐리는 2012 시즌에 팀들이 개별 레이스에 공급된 각 컴파운드를 사용하도록 장려하기 위해 타이어 컴파운드를 수정했다.[121] 피렐리는 이러한 변화가 랩당 0.7초의 차이로, 2011년 랩당 1.5초에서 감소할 것으로 예측했다.[122] 피렐리에 따르면, 가장 단단한 타이어 컴파운드는 가장 부드러운 컴파운드보다 단지 31% 더 단단하다. 이에 비해, 2011년에 사용된 가장 단단한 타이어는 가장 부드러운 타이어보다 70% 더 단단했다.[123]

  • 레이스는 레이스의 무기한 중단을 방지하기 위해 최대 4시간의 시간 제한으로 진행되었다. 이는 이론적으로 레이스가 8시간 이상 지속될 가능성을 막을 것이다. 이 규칙은 비로 인해 중단된 2011년 캐나다 그랑프리에 대응하여 도입되었으며, 이 경기는 포뮬러 원 역사상 가장 긴 레이스 기록인 4시간 4분 39초를 기록했다.[133]

시즌 중 변경점


  • 영국 GP부터, 옐로 플래그 제시 구역에서는 DRS 사용을 금지한다.
  • 영국 GP부터 블록 라인의 정의가 더욱 명확해져, 오버테이크를 시도하는 머신의 "상당 부분"이 나란히 있지 않는 한, 방어 측은 1회의 액션으로 코스 폭 전체를 사용할 수 있다고 설명되었다.[367]

2. 3. 기타 변경 사항

2012년 시즌에는 단 한 번의 드라이버 교체가 있었다. 로터스 드라이버 로맹 그로장이 벨기에 그랑프리 출발 시 다중 차량 연쇄 추돌 사고를 일으킨 책임이 있다는 것이 레이스 심사 위원회에 의해 밝혀졌기 때문이다. 그는 이 충돌 사고의 책임으로 1경기 출장 정지 및 50000EUR의 벌금을 부과받았고, 이탈리아 그랑프리에 출전하지 못하게 되었다.[74] 제롬 담브로시오가 그를 대신하여 출전하였다.[19] 그로장은 싱가포르 그랑프리에서 팀에 복귀했다.[75]

2011년 7월, 영국에서 포뮬러 원 중계권 계약이 스카이 스포츠와 BBC 사이에 발표되었다.[136][137] 이 발표는 팬들과 관계자들로부터 매우 부정적인 반응을 얻으며 논란이 되었다.[138][139] 이전에는 콩코드 협정에 따라 포뮬러 원 경기가 유료 시청 방식으로만 중계되는 것을 막는 것으로 여겨졌지만, 협정은 스카이 스포츠와 BBC가 제안한 것과 같은 공동 중계를 막지 않았다.[140] 이 중계권 계약 논란으로 영국 하원의 문화, 미디어 및 스포츠 위원회는 버니 에클레스톤과 마크 톰슨 등 "고위 BBC 관계자"를 불러 중계권 계약 세부 사항에 대해 질문했다.[141]

2011년 12월, 레드불 레이싱과 페라리는 논란이 많은 자원 제한 협약 시행에 대한 오랜 논쟁 끝에 포뮬러 원 팀 협회(FOTA)에서 탈퇴했다.[142][143] 크리스티안 호너 레드불 팀 대표는 팀의 비용 절감 노력에 대한 약속을 재확인하며, 팀과 제조사가 악용할 여지가 있는 자원 제한 협약의 특정 허점에 대한 팀의 우려를 강조했다.[144] 일주일 후, 자우버 또한 FOTA를 탈퇴했지만, 스위스 팀은 회원 자격을 종료한 이유를 공개적으로 밝히지 않았다.[145] 2012년 2월에는 토로 로소도 FOTA를 탈퇴한 것으로 알려졌다.[146]

4. 시즌 결과

2012년 포뮬러 원 시즌은 여러 진기록과 화제를 남긴 시즌이었다. 개막 후 7경기 연속으로 다른 우승자가 탄생했으며, 시즌 전체로는 8명의 우승자가 나와 1983년, 2003년 시즌과 함께 역대 공동 2위에 해당하는 기록을 세웠다.[357]

중국 그랑프리에서는 니코 로즈베르크가 첫 우승을 차지했고, 메르세데스는 1955년 이후 57년 만에 워크스(works, 제조사에서 직접 운영하는 팀)로서 승리했다. 스페인 그랑프리에서는 파스토르 말도나도가 베네수엘라인 최초로 F1 우승을 차지했다. 아부다비 그랑프리에서는 3년 만에 F1에 복귀한 키미 래이쾨넨이 우승하며, "로터스" 브랜드 팀은 1987년 이후 첫 승을 기록했다.

이처럼 우승자가 분산된 이유는 엔진 배기 장치의 공기역학적 이용( 블로언 디퓨저)이 금지되면서 팀 간 전력 차이가 좁혀졌기 때문이다. 이 기술을 주도했던 레드불은 전년도 12승 18 폴 포지션에서 7승 8PP로 성적이 하락했다. 또한 피렐리의 2012년 타이어는 작동 온도 범위(워킹 레인지)를 관리하기 어려워 레이스마다 팀들의 순위가 요동치는 결과를 낳았다.[358][359] 상위 팀들의 페이스가 불안정한 가운데, 자우버나 윌리엄스와 같은 중위권 팀들이 선전했다. 그러나 후반으로 갈수록 타이어에 대한 이해도가 높아지면서 이러한 혼란은 점차 잦아들었다.

기술적인 면에서는 메르세데스가 개발한 DRS 연동형 F 덕트 ( 더블 DRS )가 주목을 받았고, 코안다 효과를 이용한 배기 시스템 개발 경쟁도 치열하게 전개되었다.

드라이버 챔피언 경쟁은 페르난도 알론소 (페라리)와 세바스찬 베텔 (레드불)의 양강 구도로 압축되었다. 알론소는 꾸준히 포인트를 쌓았지만, 두 번의 충돌 사고로 리타이어하며 점수 차를 벌리지 못했다. 베텔은 시즌 중반까지 부진했으나, 후반부에 들어서면서 전년도의 압도적인 속도를 회복하며 알론소를 3점 차로 제치고 3년 연속 챔피언에 등극했다. 컨스트럭터 챔피언 역시 레드불이 3연패를 달성했다.

2012년 시즌에는 총 6명의 챔피언 경험자가 참가했지만, 개인 통산 최다 7회 우승 기록을 보유한 미하엘 슈마허는 이번 시즌을 끝으로 은퇴하며 19년간의 F1 경력을 마감했다.
