2. 어원

한국어 '신(神)'은 한자어이며, 그 기원은 불분명하다.[194] 일본에서는 오랫동안 신도(神道)의 신(神)을 가리키는 말이었으며, 만엽가나에서는 신(神)을 “迦微”, “柯微”, “可未”라고도 적었다.[194] 근세 이후 기독교와 서양 사상이 전래되면서, 서양 종교의 신을 지칭하는 번역어로도 사용되기 시작했다.

3. 1. 일신교의 신

유대교, 기독교, 이슬람교 등 아브라함계 종교에서는 유일신을 믿으며, 이 신은 전지전능하고 세상을 창조했다고 여겨진다.[234][235] 한국에서는 개신교의 하나님, 천주교와 성공회의 하느님으로 번역되며, 이슬람교의 알라 역시 하나님 또는 하느님으로 번역된다. 유대교는 과거에 단일신교(야훼)였으나, 현재는 유일신교로 변화했다.

모토오리 노리나가는 “보통 사람이 미칠 수 없는 덕이 있어, 두려워하는 것”이라고 정의했지만, '''신토'''에서는 신의 정의를 단적으로 정하기 어렵다. 교의라고 할 만한 것이 없고, 역사적 경위에 따라 다양한 이질적인 요소가 혼재된 신앙이기 때문이다. “야오요로즈노카미(八百万の神)”라고 불리는데, “야오요로즈(八百万)”는 수가 많다는 것을 비유적으로 표현한 것이다. 신도는 고대 율령 국가에 의해 그 체계가 정비되었지만, 도교 중의 음양도와 불교의 영향을 강하게 받아 명확한 신앙 체계를 갖지 못한 시대가 오랫동안 지속되었다. 메이지 시대에 불교의 영향을 배제하는 신불분리가 이루어지고, 일신교를 의식한 체계로서 “국가신도”가 재구성되었다. 이에 따라 신도에서 신은 아마테라스오미카미에서 “현인신”이라고 불리는 천황에 이르는 흐름을 중심으로 위치 지정되었다. 그러나 이러한 변혁은 철저한 것이 아니었고, 토착적인 요소도 여전히 많이 남았다. 제2차 세계 대전 후, 신사신도는 국가와 분리되었으며, 그때까지 비종교로 여겨졌던 신도는 종교로 재정립되었지만, 현재에도 신불습합·국가신도의 잔재는 각각 강하게 남아 있으며, 여전히 이질적인 요소가 뒤섞인 신앙이다. 불교의 영향을 받기 이전의 신도를 “고신도(원시 신도)”라고 부르며 구분하는 경우도 있다. 그러나 메이지 시대 이후의 “국가신도”도 에도 시대에 연구가 진행된 “고신도”의 사상을 많이 받아들여 형성된 측면이 있다.

불교는 원래 신과 같은 숭배 대상을 갖지 않는 종교였다. 원시불교는 번뇌에서 해방되어 열반의 경지에 이르기 위한 실천의 길이었으며, 초월적인 존재를 믿는 것이 아니었다. 현재는 신과 같이 숭배받고 있는 창시자 석가모니(고타마 싯다르타)조차도 신을 숭배하는 것을 자신의 종교에 포함하지 않았고, 자신을 신으로서 숭배하는 것도 허락하지 않았다.

시대가 내려옴에 따라 고타마 등 위대한 선인들이 깨달음을 얻은 자(부처)로서 존경을 받고 숭배받게 되면서 불교는 다신교적인 색채를 띠게 된다. 불교에는 힌두교의 신이 포함되고, 중국의 신도 포함되며, 일본에 와서는 신도와 섞였다. 불교가 여러 지역에 침투하는 과정에서 현지의 신들을 불의 본지수적으로, 또는 호법선신으로 받아들인 것이다. 따라서 불교는 일부 종파에서는 신을 불보다 하위에 있어 불법을 수호하는 존재로 위치짓고, 어떤 면에서는 불 자체도 유신교의 신과 거의 같은 기능을 하고 있다.

일본 신사에서 벤텐으로 모셔지는 신도 원래는 불교의 호법신(천부의 불)으로 받아들여진 힌두교의 여신 사라스바티이며, 불교와 함께 일본에 전래된 것이다. 이는 후에 일본의 이치키시마히메노미코토와 융합되었다(신불습합, 본지수적설).
