QAnon은 피자게이트를 넘어 전 세계적인 규모의 카발(cabal, 비밀 결사)을 상정하고 다른 여러 음모론의 요소들을 흡수했다. 초기 QAnon 추종자들은 힐러리 클린턴, 그녀의 딸 첼시, 존 매케인 상원의원 등이 이미 체포되어 발목에 전자 감시 장치를 차고 공개 석상에 나타난다는 소문을 퍼뜨렸다.[47] 이후에는 힐러리 클린턴과 후마 아베딘이 아이를 살해하고 피를 마시며 얼굴 가죽을 벗겨 가면처럼 쓴다는 내용의 스너프 필름이 존재한다는 "Frazzledrip" 이론과 같은 더욱 자극적인 소문들이 확산되었다.[48][49]

2017년 11월, 4chan 중재자였던 폴 퍼버(Paul Furber, 남아프리카 출신 음모론자, "BaruchtheScribe"라는 필명 사용[39])[50]와 콜먼 로저스(Coleman Rogers, "Pamphlet Anon"이라는 필명 사용[39])는 유튜버 트레이시 디아즈(Tracey Diaz)와 협력하여 QAnon을 더 넓은 대중에게 알리기 시작했다.[51] 이들은 QAnon 토론을 위한 레딧의 서브레딧 r/CBTS_Stream을 개설했으나, 해당 서브레딧은 폭력 선동 및 개인 정보 게시를 이유로 2018년 3월 영구 폐쇄되었다. 이후 QAnon은 트위터, 유튜브 등 다른 소셜 미디어 플랫폼으로 퍼져나갔다. 로저스와 그의 아내 크리스티나 우르소(Christina Urso)는 QAnon 전문 유튜브 라이브 스트리밍 채널 'Patriots' Soapbox'를 개설하고 기부를 받았다. 훗날 미국 하원의원이 되는 로렌 보버트도 2020년 선거 운동 기간 중 이 채널에 출연하기도 했다. "Q"는 4chan 게시판이 "침투되었다"는 우려를 표하며 8chan으로 게시 장소를 옮겼고, 이후로는 8chan에만 게시물을 올렸다.[13] 2019년 8월, 2019년 엘패소 총격 사건 등 여러 폭력 사건과의 연관성 때문에 8chan이 폐쇄되자 QAnon 추종자들은 8chan이 8kun이라는 이름으로 재개될 때까지 Endchan 등의 다른 플랫폼으로 이동했다.[114][28] 4chan 시절의 Q와 8chan 시절의 Q가 동일 인물인지는 불분명하며, 법언어학 연구에서는 4chan Q는 폴 퍼버, 8chan Q는 8chan 운영자 론 왓킨스(Ron Watkins)일 가능성을 제기했다.[52]

QAnon은 2017년 11월 뉴스위크(Newsweek)가 "스테로이드를 맞은 피자게이트"라고 보도하면서 처음으로 주류 언론의 주목을 받았다.[47] 피자게이트 추종자였던 가십 칼럼니스트 리즈 크로킨(Liz Crokin)은 QAnon을 초기에 받아들인 유명 인사 중 한 명으로, 이후 QAnon 운동의 주요 인플루언서가 되었다.[54] 2018년 초, 폭스 뉴스(Fox News)의 유명 진행자 숀 해니티(Sean Hannity)와 코미디언 로잔느 바(Roseanne Barr)가 자신의 소셜 미디어를 통해 QAnon 관련 내용을 퍼뜨리면서[55] 음모론은 미국 우파 주류 사회에서 인기를 얻기 시작했다.[56] 이 시기에 극우 음모론 웹사이트 인포워즈(InfoWars)의 운영자 알렉스 존스(Alex Jones)는 자신이 Q와 개인적으로 연락하고 있다고 주장하기도 했다. 2018년 7월, 탬파에서 열린 트럼프 대통령의 유세 현장에 QAnon 지지자들이 등장하면서, 이는 QAnon 운동이 대중적으로 가시화된 첫 사례가 되었다.[57]

일부 기독교 목사들도 QAnon 사상을 신도들에게 소개했다. 인디애나주의 오메가 킹덤 미니스트리(Omega Kingdom Ministry)는 교회 예배에서 Q의 게시물과 성경 구절을 함께 읽으며 QAnon과 기독교를 결합하려는 시도를 보였다.[58] 데릭 쿠빌루스(Derek Kubilus) 목사처럼 QAnon을 이단으로 비판하는 기독교인도 있었지만,[59] 대부분의 미국 목사들은 QAnon에 대해 명확한 입장을 밝히지 않았다. 전반적으로 QAnon의 부상은 미국 극우 운동 내에서의 급진화 및 폭력성 증가와 맞물려 진행되었다.[60]

2018년부터 QAnon 관련 상품들이 아마존의 온라인 마켓플레이스에서 널리 판매되기 시작했다.[61] 12명의 QAnon 추종자가 공동 저술한 것으로 알려진 책 ''QAnon: 위대한 각성을 위한 초대''는 2019년 알고리즘 조작을 통해 아마존 베스트셀러 목록 상위권에 오르기도 했다.[62][63] 또한 2019년, QAnon 블로거 네온 리볼트(Neon Revolt, 본명 로버트 코르네로 주니어)가 자비 출판한 책 ''혁명 Q: QAnon과 제2의 미국 혁명 이야기''는 QAnon 커뮤니티 내에서 영향력 있는 문헌이 되었으며 역시 아마존을 통해 유통되었다.[64] 2020년 폴리티코(Politico)는 아마존 마켓플레이스에서 100여 종의 QAnon 관련 서적이 다양한 언어로 판매되고 있으며, 대체로 긍정적인 평가를 받고 있다고 보도했다.[65]

"드롭"(drops) 또는 "Q 드롭스"(Q drops)라고 불리는 Q의 게시물을 모아놓은 웹사이트[66][67][114]는 QAnon의 확산에 중요한 역할을 했다. 그중 가장 유명하고 인기 있었던 사이트는 QMap으로, "QAPPANON"이라는 가명을 사용하는 개발자가 운영했다.[68][69] 그러나 2020년 9월, 영국의 팩트 체크 기관 로지컬리(Logically)가 QAPPANON의 신원을 뉴저지 기반의 보안 분석가 제이슨 젤리나스(Jason Gelinas)로 특정하는 보고서를 발표하자 QMap은 폐쇄되었다.[69][70][71] 여러 온라인 커뮤니티가 QAnon을 중심으로 형성되었는데, 2020년 페이스북의 자체 조사 결과 수백만 명의 회원과 팔로워를 보유한 수천 개의 QAnon 관련 그룹과 페이지가 페이스북 내에 존재하는 것으로 밝혀졌다.[72]

로이터(Reuters) 통신에 따르면, 러시아의 지원을 받는 소셜 미디어 계정들이 빠르면 2017년 11월부터 QAnon 관련 주장을 퍼뜨리기 시작했다.[15] 러시아 국영 매체인 RT와 스푸트니크 등은 2019년부터 QAnon 음모론을 증폭시키며, 이를 미국 사회 내부 갈등의 증거로 제시했다.[17] 2021년 수판 센터(Soufan Center)의 보고서에 따르면, 2020년 1월부터 2021년 2월까지 미국 내 QAnon 게시물 중 약 5분의 1이 해외, 특히 러시아와 중국에서 비롯되었으며, 중국이 "온라인에서 QAnon 서사를 퍼뜨리는 주요 해외 행위자"였다고 분석했다.[18][73][74] 극우 성향의 파룬궁과 관련된 에포크 미디어 그룹(Epoch Media Group)과 그 산하 매체 에포크 타임스(The Epoch Times) 역시 QAnon 음모론의 주요 유포자 중 하나로 지목된다.

서던캘리포니아 대학교의 에밀리오 페라라(Emilio Ferrara) 교수는 QAnon 해시태그를 사용하거나 인포워즈, 원 아메리카 뉴스 네트워크(One America News Network)를 리트윗한 계정의 약 25%가 인터넷 봇이었다는 연구 결과를 발표했다.[75]

2020년 8월, 연구원 마크-앙드레 아르헨티노(Marc-André Argentino)는 전 세계 71개국에 QAnon 전용 페이스북 페이지가 존재한다고 밝혔다. 2021년 1월, 연구원 조엘 핀켈스타인(Joel Finkelstein)은 워싱턴 포스트와의 인터뷰에서 독일과 일본의 QAnon 운동이 "강력하고 성장하고 있다"고 언급했지만,[76] 이후 뉴욕 타임스는 일본판 QAnon("JAnon" Jアノン일본어)[77]은 음모론자들 사이에서도 여전히 주변적인 믿음에 머물러 있다고 보도했다.[78] 2022년 기준으로 일본에는 J-Anon, QArmyJapanFlynn, YamatoQ 등 3개의 친(親)QAnon 단체가 활동하는 것으로 알려졌다.[79][80] 2022년 4월, 도쿄 경찰은 코로나19 백신 접종소에 무단 침입한 혐의로 YamatoQ 회원 여러 명을 체포했다.[81]

코로나19 팬데믹 기간인 2020년 3월부터 6월 사이, 페이스북에서의 QAnon 활동은 거의 3배, 인스타그램과 트위터에서는 거의 2배 증가했다.[82] 이 시기 QAnon은 네덜란드에서 발칸 반도에 이르기까지 유럽 전역으로 확산되었다.[83]

독일에서는 극우 활동가와 인플루언서들이 유튜브, 페이스북, 텔레그램 등을 통해 약 20만 명으로 추산되는 독일 내 QAnon 추종자 기반을 구축했다. 독일의 Reichsbürger(제국 시민) 운동 세력은 현대 독일이 주권 국가가 아니라 연합국이 세운 회사라는 자신들의 주장을 퍼뜨리기 위해 QAnon을 활용했고, 트럼프가 군대를 이끌고 와서 독일 제국(Reich)을 복원해주기를 기대했다.[83] 2022년 3월 독일 싱크탱크 모니터링, 분석 및 전략 센터(CeMAS)의 연구에 따르면, 독일인 10명 중 1명 이상이 QAnon 이론에 동의하며, 특히 독일을 위한 대안(AfD)과 오스트리아 자유당(FPÖ) 지지자들 사이에서 QAnon을 믿는 경향이 더 높게 나타났다.[84][85]

러시아에서는 현 러시아 연방이 실제로는 미국 델라웨어에 기반을 둔 유한책임회사이며 러시아 영토를 불법 점유하고 있다고 주장하는 "소비에트 시민"이라는 유사 음모론 집단 역시 QAnon 신념에 영향을 받았다.[86]

2020년 설문 조사에 따르면, 영국인 4명 중 1명이 QAnon 관련 이론을 믿는 것으로 나타났지만, QAnon 자체를 지지하는 비율은 6%에 불과했다.[87] 2020년 10월, 영국의 인종차별 반대 단체 호프 낫 헤이트(Hope not Hate)는 영국인 인플루언서 마틴 게데스(Martin Geddes)가 "세계에서 가장 인기 있는 QAnon 트위터 계정 중 하나"를 운영하고 있다고 밝혔다.[88] 2021년 10월, 프랑스의 QAnon 관련 음모론자 레미 다이에-비데만(Rémy Daillet-Wiedemann)[89][90]은 프랑스 정부 전복을 위한 쿠데타를 계획한 혐의로 테러 혐의로 기소되었다. 다이에-비데만의 여러 공모자들도 2021년 말[91]과 2022년 초에 체포되어 기소되었다.[92]

캐나다에서도 많은 사람들이 QAnon을 홍보했다.[93][94][95] 2020년 7월, 총기를 소지한 QAnon 추종자가 차량을 몰고 캐나다 총리 저스틴 트뤼도의 임시 거처인 리도 홀 부지에 침입하여, 코로나19 방역 조치 및 총기 규제와 관련하여 트뤼도를 "체포"하려 시도하는 사건이 발생했다.[96][97][98]

4. QAnon의 주요 주장

QAnon의 핵심 주장은 세상이 사탄을 숭배하는 소아성애자들의 비밀 결사(카발, 딥 스테이트)에 의해 통제되며, 도널드 트럼프 전 대통령이 그들을 막기 위해 비밀리에 싸우고 있다는 내용이다. 'Q'라는 익명의 인물이 이 싸움에 대한 세부 정보를 온라인에 게시한다고 주장한다. 이 결사는 정치인, 주류 언론, 할리우드를 통제하여 그 존재를 은폐하는 것으로 여겨진다.[141] Q의 게시물은 이 결사의 파멸이 임박했으며, 이는 QAnon 커뮤니티 '애국자'들의 지원을 통해서만 달성될 수 있다고 암시한다.[114]

이러한 결사의 파멸은 "사건" 또는 "폭풍"으로 알려진 시기에 일어날 것으로 예상되며, 이때 수천 명의 사람들이 체포되어 관타나모 만 해군 기지로 보내지거나 군사 재판에 직면하게 된다. 그 후 미국 군대가 국가를 장악하고, 그 결과 지상에 구원과 유토피아가 도래할 것이라고 믿는다.[142]

QAnon 추종자들은 이 비밀 결사에 다음과 같은 유명 인사들이 포함되어 있다고 믿는다.

톰 행크스는 특히 표적이 되었는데, 코로나19 팬데믹 초기에 그가 격리되자 아동 학대 혐의로 체포되었다는 소문이 퍼졌으며, 심지어 가짜 뉴스 웹사이트인 리얼 로 뉴스의 기사를 사실로 받아들이는 추종자들도 있었다.[146][144]

2020년 대선까지 QAnon의 핵심 주장 중 하나는 트럼프가 압도적인 승리로 재선되어 딥 스테이트를 무너뜨리고 '폭풍'을 가져올 것이라는 반복된 예측이었다.[147] 그러나 트럼프가 패배하고 Q가 게시를 중단하자, 추종자들은 이전 게시물에서 새로운 단서를 찾거나 이론의 새로운 파생형을 만들었다.[148] 이후 트럼프가 대통령으로 남거나 권력을 되찾을 것이라는 여러 예측이 나왔다.

  • 주권 시민 운동에서 주장하는 음모론에 기반하여, 트럼프가 2021년 3월 4일에 제19대 대통령으로 취임할 것이라는 예측.[150][651][652]
  • 위 예측이 실패하자, 트럼프가 2021년 3월 20일 또는 8월 13일에 다시 취임할 것이라는 예측.[151]
  • 2021년 매리코파 카운티 대통령 선거 감사나 2021년 캘리포니아 주지사 소환 선거 결과에서 선거 사기가 증명되어 트럼프가 대통령으로 복귀할 것이라는 예측.[148][152]
  • 1963년에 암살된 존 F. 케네디 대통령이나 1999년에 사망한 그의 아들 존 F. 케네디 주니어가 2021년 11월 2일 댈러스 딜리 플라자에 나타나 트럼프의 대통령 복귀와 케네디 주니어의 부통령 임명을 발표할 것이라는 예측.[153] 실제로 수백 명의 지지자들이 이날 딜리 플라자에 모이기도 했다.[179][180][181]


QAnon은 피자게이트 음모론과 사실상 통합되어, 아이들이 아동 인신매매 조직에 의해 납치되고 있다는 주장을 포함한다. 또한 트럼프를 이 범죄 네트워크에 맞서 싸우는 유일한 인물로 간주한다. 더 나아가 정치인과 할리우드 엘리트들이 아이들의 피에서 아드레날린을 추출하여 정신 자극제인 아드레노크롬을 생산하는 '아드레노크롬 수확'(adrenochrome harvesting영어)에 관여한다는 주장도 퍼졌다.[154] 이는 아이들이 공포에서 비롯되는 아드레날린을 수확하기 위해 사탄교 의식에서 고문당하거나 희생된다는 주장으로 이어진다.[156] 힐러리 클린턴과 후마 아베딘이 아이를 살해하는 모습을 담았다고 주장하는 'Frazzledrip'이라는 영상은 이러한 '아드레노크롬 수확'을 묘사한 것이라고 주장한다.[49] 일부는 아드레노크롬이 젊음을 유지하는 엘릭서(불로불사의 약)로 사용된다고 주장한다.[157] 실제 아드레노크롬은 연구 목적으로만 합성되며 의학적 용도로는 사용되지 않는다.[158][159][160] 이 아드레노크롬 관련 주장은 유대인이 기독교 아이들의 피를 종교 의식에 사용한다는 중세 반유대주의 신화인 혈액 중상 모략과 유사하다는 비판을 받는다.[154][236][237][238]

2021년 텍사스주 루프킨의 다리에 있는 #SaveOurChildren 낙서


2020년, 일부 추종자들은 아동 복지 단체 세이브 더 칠드런의 이름을 도용하여 트위터 '#SaveTheChildren'(또는 '#SaveOurChildren') 해시태그를 사용하기 시작했다.[163][164] 이는 QAnon의 아동 인신매매 주장을 확산시키려는 시도였으며, 이에 세이브 더 칠드런은 해당 명칭의 무단 사용에 대해 공식 성명을 발표했다.[165] 페이스북과 인스타그램은 이 해시태그 사용을 제한하려 했다.[166][167] 같은 시기, 가구 회사 웨이페어가 아동 성매매 피해자를 상품으로 위장하여 판매하고 있다는 거짓 음모론(웨이페어게이트)도 퍼졌다.[168][169] 미국과 영국에서는 아동 성 학대 및 인신매매에 대한 인식을 높인다고 주장하는 거리 시위가 조직되기도 했는데, 이는 파스텔 QAnon 커뮤니티와 연관된 것으로 여겨진다.

QAnon이 유명인에 대해 제기하는 아동 학대 주장은 배우 아이작 캐피가 2018년에 여러 할리우드 스타들을 소아성애 성향으로 고발한, 입증되지 않은 주장에서 비롯된 경우가 많다.[144][173][174] 연구자들은 이러한 근거 없는 주장이 실제 아동 학대 문제 해결 노력을 방해한다고 비판한다.[175] 제프리 엡스타인의 체포나 사망을 둘러싼 음모론 역시 QAnon 신자 증가에 영향을 미쳤다. 2022년에는 QAnon 지지자들이 멕시코-미국 국경에서 아동 이주민을 가로막고 성매매 희생양이라는 명목으로 개인 정보를 수집하는 사례도 보고되었다.[176]

QAnon은 새로운 주장을 계속 추가하며 진화하는 "포괄적 음모론"(big tent conspiracy theory영어)으로 불린다. 이는 피자게이트뿐만 아니라 케네디 암살, UFO, 9/11 등 기존의 다양한 음모론 요소를 흡수했기 때문이다.[8] 예를 들어, 존 F. 케네디 주니어가 자신의 죽음을 위장했으며 그가 'Q'라는 주장[177][178], 또는 그가 부활하여 트럼프의 복귀를 도울 것이라는 기대[179][180][181] 등이 있다.

일부 QAnon 추종자들은 법률과 세금의 정당성을 부정하는 주권 시민 운동에 동조하기도 했다.[183][184] 반명예훼손연맹(ADL)은 조 바이든 행정부의 정당성에 대한 불신이 주권 시민 운동의 반국가주의적 견해와 맞아떨어지면서 이러한 경향이 강화되고 있다고 보고했다.[185]

Q는 2018년 "백신[모두는 아님]"이 빅 파마 음모론의 일부라고 주장했다. 코로나19 팬데믹 기간 동안 불안과 고립이 심화되면서, 많은 추종자들은 팬데믹 상황을 이용하여 QAnon을 홍보했다. 이들은 공개적으로 마스크 거부[43] 및 백신 반대[186][187][188][189]를 주장하고, 팬데믹 부인주의[54]뿐만 아니라 다른 코로나19 오보 확산에도 기여했다.[190][191][192] 심지어 산업용 표백제인 미라클 미네랄 솔루션(MMS) 음용을 코로나19의 '기적적인 치료법'으로 홍보하기도 했다.[193][194][195] Q는 당시 트럼프가 지지했던 하이드록시클로로퀸이 치료법이라고 제안했고, 민주당이 감염자를 요양원에 강제 입원시켜 사망자를 의도적으로 발생시켰다고 비난했다.[44] 일부는 팬데믹 자체가 거짓이거나 '딥 스테이트'에 의해 조작되었다고 주장했으며,[114] 음모론 영상 '플랜데믹'(Plandemic영어) 홍보에도 기여했다.[43]

2022년 러시아의 우크라이나 침공 당시에는 우크라이나 내 미국 지원 연구소에 대한 러시아의 허위 정보를 퍼뜨리며, 블라디미르 푸틴과 트럼프가 이 연구소를 파괴하기 위해 협력하고 있다는 주장으로 침공을 정당화하려 시도했다.[196][197]

지지자들은 또한 NESARA 경제 음모론[202]이나, 권력을 잡은 사탄주의 카발이 변신 가능한 파충류형 휴머노이드라는 파충류 음모론[203] 등을 믿기도 한다.

QAnon은 역사학자 리처드 호프스태터가 묘사한 ""(The Paranoid Style in American Politics영어)의 한 예로 볼 수 있다.[4][141] 피자게이트와 마찬가지로 1980년대 보육 시설 아동 학대에 대한 공포를 조장했던 사탄 숭배 공포와 유사점을 보인다.[238][227][228] 또한 "폭풍", "대각성 운동" 등 기독교적 비유를 차용하며, 트럼프를 메시아적 인물로 여기는 등 종교적 색채를 띠기도 한다.[4][229][3][142] 일부 학자들은 복음주의에서 강조하는 종말론, 영적 전쟁 등의 주제가 QAnon 신념 체계 형성에 영향을 미쳤다고 분석한다.

5. "Q"의 정체

"Q"의 정체는 정확히 밝혀지지 않았지만, 여러 인물이 협력하여 관리하는 가명이라는 것이 연구자들 사이의 정설이다. 법언어학적 분석 결과, 최소 두 명의 다른 인물이 서로 다른 시기에 "Q"라는 이름으로 글을 게시했을 가능성이 제기되었다.[698][699] "Q"는 정부의 민감한 정보에 접근할 수 있는 인물로 묘사되었으나, 조사 보도 사이트 벨링캣은 초기 "Q" 게시물을 분석한 결과, "Q"가 처음부터 정부 고위 관계자가 아니라 점차 온라인상의 정체성을 구축해 간 4chan의 일반 이용자였을 수 있다고 추론했다.[697]

"Q"는 4chan, 8chan(현 8kun)과 같은 익명 이미지 게시판에서 트립코드를 사용하여 게시물 간의 일관된 정체성을 유지하려 했다. 이 트립코드는 여러 차례 변경되었고, 때로는 해킹되어 Q를 사칭하는 데 사용되기도 했다.[703] 8chan 서버는 트립코드를 고유하게 검증하므로, 8chan/8kun의 관리자인 짐 와킨스와 그의 아들 론 와킨스는 기술적으로 "Q"의 정체를 통제하거나 파악할 수 있는 위치에 있었다.[705]

8chan의 창립자인 프레드릭 브레넌은 짐 와킨스나 론 와킨스가 "Q"이거나, "Q"를 알고 있거나 고용했을 것이라고 주장했다.[625][705] 그는 2020년 9월, 남아프리카 공화국의 소프트웨어 개발자이자 4chan 모더레이터였던 폴 퍼버가 최초의 "Q"였으며, 2017년 말[705] 또는 2018년 초에 론 와킨스가 8chan 관리자 권한을 이용해 퍼버로부터 계정을 넘겨받았다고 추측했다.[707] 퍼버는 자신이 Q였다는 것을 부인했다.[707] 짐 와킨스와 론 와킨스 역시 Q임을 부인하며, Q의 정체를 모른다고 말했다.[625][708][705]

2021년 HBO 다큐멘터리 시리즈 《Q: 인투 더 스톰》의 마지막 회에서, 감독 컬렌 호백과의 인터뷰 중 론 와킨스는 자신이 Q였음을 시인하는 것으로 해석될 수 있는 발언을 했다.[709][710][711] 호백은 이를 바탕으로 론 와킨스가 Q라고 결론지었지만,[711] 론 와킨스는 다큐멘터리 방영 직후 다시 Q임을 부인했다.[712]

이 외에도 "Q"의 정체에 대해서는 군 정보 장교[629], 트럼프 행정부 내부 고발자[544], 마이클 플린, 스티븐 밀러, 또는 도널드 트럼프 자신이라는 등 다양한 추측이 제기되었다.

6. QAnon의 슬로건과 용어

QAnon의 확산 과정에는 그 인기를 높이고 온라인에서의 존재감을 강화하는 데 기여한 여러 슬로건, 캐치프레이즈, 유행어, 그리고 해시태그가 동반되었다.[625][658] "카발(cabal)"이나 "폭풍(The Storm)"과 같은 용어, 그리고 Q가 자주 사용한 "Trust the planeng(계획을 믿어라)", "Enjoy the showeng(쇼를 즐겨라)", "Nothing can stop what is comingeng(다가오는 것을 막을 수 없다)"와 같은 구절들은 QAnon 지지자들 사이에서 널리 사용되는 대표적인 표현이다.[633][114][157] 이러한 반복적인 구절은 지지자들에게 '카발'에 대한 최종 승리가 임박했으며 계획이 차질 없이 진행되고 있다는 믿음을 유지하도록 독려하는 역할을 했다.[633][114]

Q가 4chan이나 8chan 등에 올린 게시물들은 "드롭(drops)" 또는 "빵 부스러기(breadcrumbs)"라고 불린다.[721][67] Q 자신이 '빵 부스러기'라는 용어를 사용하기도 했다.[67] 이 용어에 착안하여, Q의 메시지를 분석하고 해석하는 추종자들은 스스로를 "빵 굽는 사람(bakers)"이라고 칭했다. 이들은 Q가 남긴 "빵 부스러기"들을 모아 "반죽" 또는 "빵"을 만들 듯이, 단서들을 조합하여 QAnon 이야기의 전체 그림을 이해하려고 시도했다.[722][67]

QAnon 추종자들이 초기에 사용했던 구호 중 하나는 "Follow the White Rabbiteng(하얀 토끼를 따라가라)"였다.[627][47] 이는 영화 `매트릭스`에서 유래한 대사로, 원작인 `이상한 나라의 앨리스`를 참조한 것이다. Q는 이 구절을 통해 추종자들이 직접 인터넷 등에서 정보를 조사하여 숨겨진 "진실"을 발견하도록 독려했다. QAnon 추종자들은 이 "하얀 토끼"라는 표현을 해시태그[115][47]나 페이스북 그룹의 이름[116] 등으로 널리 사용했다. 2020년에는 관련 페이스북 그룹 회원 수가 약 9만 명에 달하기도 했다.[116]

가장 유명한 QAnon 슬로건 중 하나는 "Where we go one, we go alleng"이며, 흔히 "WWG1WGA"로 축약된다.[629] 이 문구는 "우리는 일치단결하여 나아간다"는 의미를 가지며, 1996년 영화 `화이트 스콜`에서 유래했지만 때때로 존 F. 케네디 전 미국 대통령의 발언으로 잘못 알려지기도 한다.[224] Q는 2018년 4월에 이 슬로건을 처음 사용했다.[44]

이 외에도 QAnon 커뮤니티 내에서는 다양한 용어와 구절이 통용된다. "Do your own researcheng(스스로 조사하라)" 또는 "Do the researcheng(조사하라)"는 QAnon의 주장을 뒷받침할 "단서"를 직접 찾아보도록 사람들을 독려하는 말이다.[157] "Q sent meeng(Q가 나를 보냈다)"는 Q에 대한 충성심을 드러내는 표현이다.[157]

다른 일반적인 용어로는 다음과 같은 것들이 있다:

  • 백모자(white hat): 트럼프와 그의 지지자들, 즉 '선한 세력'을 의미한다.[721][224]

  • 레드 필(red pill): 영화 `매트릭스`에서 유래한 용어로, QAnon의 세계관을 받아들이고 "진실"을 인식하게 되는 것을 비유적으로 표현한다. ("레드 필을 먹다"와 같이 사용된다.)[723]
  • 양떼(sheeple): 주류 언론의 보도를 맹신하고 QAnon의 주장을 믿지 않는 사람들을 경멸적으로 부르는 용어이다. (양(sheep)과 사람들(people)을 합친 혼성어)[723]
  • 17anon: Q는 알파벳의 17번째 글자이므로, 소셜 미디어 등에서 'QAnon'이라는 직접적인 언급에 대한 검열이나 필터링을 피하기 위해 사용하는 대체 표기법이다.[157]

7. QAnon의 파생 요소

탐사 보도 웹사이트인 ''벨링캣''(Bellingcat)은 4chan의 /pol/ 게시판에 있는 /htg/("인신매매 일반") 스레드를 피자게이트와 QAnon 사이의 "잃어버린 고리"로 지칭했다. 제한된 이메일 자료 대신, /htg/ 문화는 사용자들이 상상 속 이야기에 적극적으로 참여하도록 유도했다. 주요 게시자 중 한 명인 익명5(Anonymous5, "프랭크"라고도 불림)는 아동 매춘 수사관을 자처했으나, 일관성 있는 서사 부족으로 피자게이트만큼의 인기를 얻지는 못했다.[37]

QAnon 이데올로기의 핵심 내용은 Q 등장 이전부터 4chan에 존재했다. 힐러리 클린턴이 소아성애자 조직에 연루되었다는 주장, 로버트 뮬러가 트럼프와 비밀리에 협력하고 있다는 주장, 대규모 군사 재판이 임박했다는 주장 등이 그것이다. Q의 게시물은 특히 클린턴, 버락 오바마, 조지 소로스와 같이 커뮤니티에서 이미 미움받던 인물들을 겨냥했다. 벨링캣은 "폭풍"(Storm)이라는 개념이 대규모 TV 중계 체포를 예측한 다른 게시자 '빛의 승리'(Victory of the Light)로부터 차용된 것이라고 분석했다.[37]

가장 기본적인 의미에서 "익명 사용자(anon)"는 익명이나 가명으로 인터넷에 글을 쓰는 사람을 뜻한다.[38] 익명 사용자가 "조사"를 통해 기밀 정보를 공개한다고 주장하는 것은 QAnon 음모론의 핵심 요소지만, QAnon만의 특징은 아니다. Q 이전에도 특별한 정부 접근 권한을 가졌다고 주장하는 익명 사용자들이 있었다. 2016년 7월, 자신을 "클린턴 사건 내부 정보에 정통한 고위 분석가이자 전략가"라고 칭한 "FBIAnon"은 클린턴 재단 조사 관련 허위 정보를 게시하며 트럼프가 대통령이 되면 힐러리 클린턴이 투옥될 것이라고 주장했다. 비슷한 시기 "HLIAnon"("고위 내부자 익명")은 다이애나 왕세자비가 9.11 테러를 막으려다 살해되었다는 등 다양한 음모론을 퍼뜨렸다. 2016년 미국 대통령 선거 직후에는 "CIAAnon"과 "CIAIntern"이 허위로 중앙정보국(CIA) 고위 간부라고 주장했고, 2017년 8월에는 "WHInsiderAnon"이 민주당 관련 유출이 임박했다는 예측을 내놓았다.[39]

QAnon은 피자게이트보다 더 나아가 전 세계적인 카발을 상정하고 다른 음모론의 요소들을 통합했다. 초기 소문 중 하나는 힐러리 클린턴, 그녀의 딸 첼시, 존 매케인 상원 의원 등이 이미 체포되어 발목에 전자 감시 장치를 차고 있다는 내용이었다.[47] 이후 QAnon 커뮤니티는 힐러리 클린턴과 후마 아베딘이 아이를 살해하고 피를 마시며 얼굴 피부를 벗겨 가면처럼 쓴다는 내용의 스너프 필름 비디오가 존재한다는 "Frazzledrip" 이론과 같은 다른 소문을 퍼뜨리는 데 기여했다.[48][49]

QAnon은 아이들이 아동 인신매매 조직에 의해 납치되고 있다는 믿음을 포함하여, 피자게이트와 효과적으로 병합되었다. 추종자들은 트럼프를 이 범죄 네트워크에 맞서 싸우는 유일한 인물로 여긴다. 이에 더하여 정치인과 할리우드 엘리트들이 아이들의 피에서 아드레날린을 추출하여 정신 자극제 아드레노크롬을 생산하는 "아드레노크롬 수확"에 관여한다는 믿음이 더해졌다.[154] 이는 아이들이 공포에서 비롯되는 아드레날린을 수확하기 위해 사탄교 의식에서 고문을 받거나 희생된다는 주장으로 이어진다.[156] 힐러리 클린턴과 후마 아베딘이 아이를 살해했다고 주장하는 "Frazzledrip" 비디오는 "아드레노크롬 수확"을 묘사한 것이라고 한다.[49] QAnon 이론의 한 버전은 아동 학대자들이 아드레노크롬을 젊음을 유지하는 묘약으로 사용한다고 주장한다.[157] 실제로 아드레노크롬은 연구 목적으로만 합성되며 의학적 용도로는 사용되지 않는다.[158][159][160]

2020년 6월, QAnon 홍보가인 티모시 찰스 홀름세스(Timothy Charles Holmseth)가 이끄는 집단은 미국 국방부나 어떤 미국 정부 기관과도 연관이 없음에도 불구하고 스스로를 펜타곤 소아성애자 태스크 포스(Pentagon Pedophile Task Force)라고 칭하며, 수만 명의 아이들이 뉴욕시에 억류되어 고문을 받고 있다는 거짓 주장을 퍼뜨려 주목을 받았다.[161][162] 또한 2020년까지 일부 추종자들은 아동 복지 단체인 세이브 더 칠드런의 상표화된 이름을 도용하여 트위터 해시태그 #SaveTheChildren(#SaveOurChildren도 사용됨)을 사용하기 시작했다.[163][164] 이로 인해 세이브 더 칠드런은 8월 7일 캠페인에서 자사 이름의 무단 사용에 대한 성명을 발표했다.[165] 9월, 페이스북과 인스타그램은 #SaveTheChildren 해시태그를 검색하는 사용자를 아동 복지 단체로 리디렉션하여 QAnon과 연관되는 것을 막으려 했다.[166] 10월, 페이스북은 해시태그의 도달 범위를 제한하려 한다고 발표했다.[167]

같은 기간에 QAnon 추종자들은 가구 회사 웨이페어가, QAnon 홍보가인 패트릭 번이 CEO를 맡았던 오버스톡(Overstock)의 경쟁사였는데, 아동 성매매로 얻은 돈을 세탁하기 위해 고가의 가구를 판매했다는 거짓 음모론을 만들었다.[168][169]

미국과 영국 내의 유사 단체들은 아동 성학대와 인신매매에 대한 인식을 높인다고 주장하는 거리 시위를 조직하는 데 도움을 주었다.[170][171] 이러한 시위와 해시태그는 종종 소셜 미디어 제한을 피했으며[172] 전형적인 QAnon 그룹보다 더 많은 여성과 정치적으로 다양하고 젊은 사람들이 참여하는 경향이 있으며, 트럼프와 그의 리더십에 반대하는 사람들을 포함한다. 이들 그룹은 파스텔 QAnon 커뮤니티와 연관된 것으로 간주된다.

QAnon이 인기 연예인들에 대해 제기하는 아동 학대 주장은 2018년에 여러 할리우드 스타들을 소아성애자로 비난한 배우 아이작 캐피의 입증되지 않은 주장에 근거하고 있다.[144][173][174]

트래비스 뷰(Travis View)는 ''워싱턴 포스트'' 칼럼에서 QAnon과 피자게이트 음모론자들이 근거 없는 주장이 실제 범죄로부터 주의를 분산시키기 때문에 아동 성학대 근절 노력을 훼손한다고 썼다. 이들 이론의 추종자들은 또한 자신들이 관여하지 않은 범죄자 체포에 대해 스스로 공을 돌렸다. QAnon 홍보가 조던 새더(Jordan Sather)는 제프리 엡스타인의 체포를 4chan과 8chan의 덕분으로 돌렸지만, 조사 보고서나 기소에는 이 포럼이 언급되지 않았다.[175] 엡스타인의 죽음에 대한 몇몇 음모론 또한 사람들을 QAnon으로 이끌었다.

QAnon 운동의 분석과 허구성을 폭로하는 팟캐스트 QAnon 익명은 QAnon을 진화하고 새로운 주장을 추가할 수 있는 능력 때문에 "빅 텐트 음모론"이라고 부른다. 지지자들은 또한 NESARA 경제 음모론에 투자하게 되었다. 2022년, ''벨링캣''은 많은 QAnon 관련 텔레그램 채널이 점점 더 NESARA 콘텐츠에 전념하고 있다고 보도했다.[202]

QAnon은 다른 많은 음모론의 요소를 통합하고 있기에, 정치적이든 종교적이든 이전의 이야기, 이미지 및 도덕적 공황과 유사성을 보인다. ''Salon''에서 매튜 로자(Matthew Rozsa)는 QAnon이 역사학자 리처드 호프스태터가 1964년 그의 종말론과 묵시록주의에 관한 에세이 "미국 정치의 편집증적 스타일"에서 언급한 현상의 예시로 가장 잘 이해될 수 있다고 썼다.[4][141] 피자게이트 음모론과 마찬가지로,[226] QAnon은 1980년대 수백 명의 보육 교사가 어린이 학대로 거짓 고발을 받았던 사탄 숭배 공포와 어느 정도 유사성을 지닌다.[238][227][228]

이 운동은 "놀랍게도 기독교적 이원론을 기반으로 한다."[229] 모든 참된 지식은 결함 있는 인간의 이성이 아닌 신에 의해 계시된다고 주장하는 전제주의와 같은 신학적 틀은 QAnon에서 신학적 영역에서 정치적 영역으로 쉽게 확장되는 이원론적 우리 대 그들 사고로 이어진다고 주장된다.

종교학자 줄리 잉거솔은 복음주의자들이 "종말론, 음모, 박해 내러티브에 대한 신학적 헌신을 더 큰 미국 문화에 엮음으로써 QAnon의 광범위한 수용을 가능하게 하는 데 도움을 주었다"고 주장한다. 1970년대부터 복음주의 미디어에서 인기를 얻은 메시아적, 종말론적, 영적 전쟁 주제는 물론 신세계 질서와 같이 인구 통계에서 대중화된 음모론도 QAnon 신념 체계에 영향을 미치는 요소이자 복음주의자에게 호소하는 QAnon의 측면으로 묘사되었다.[230][231] 종말론적 이야기는 기독교인들에게 실제 미래 사건에 대한 허구적 묘사로 간주되어 실제 세계적 중요성을 부여한다.[230] 미국학자 S. 조나단 오도넬은 트럼프가 악마적인 그림자 정부와 싸우는 것으로 보는 QAnon이 기독교 영적 전쟁과 상당한 공통점을 가지며, 그 추종자들 또한 겹친다고 주장한다.[232] 한 학자는 "QAnon은 사실상 프랭크 페레티의 영적 전쟁, 레프트 비하인드 시리즈의 종말론, 그리고 시온의 장로 의정서 반유대주의 음모론의 일부를 묶어 '셀러브리티 어프렌티스' 리얼리티 TV와 소셜 미디어에 대한 매혹적이고 자기 연관적인 변형으로 포장했다"고 썼다.[230]

반명예훼손 연맹에 따르면, "QAnon에서 영감을 얻은 음모론의 대다수는 반유대주의와 아무 관련이 없지만", 이스라엘, 유대인, 시온주의자, 로스차일드, 소로스에 관한 QAnon 트윗의 "인상적인 검토"에서 "몇 가지 우려스러운 사례가 드러났습니다".[233] 이선 주커먼과 마이크 맥퀘이드는 QAnon이 "명시적으로 반유대주의적이기보다는 반엘리트주의적"이라고 주장했습니다.[7] ''워싱턴 포스트''와 잡지 ''The Forward''는 QAnon이 조지 소로스와 로스차일드와 같은 유대인들을 겨냥한 것을 "놀라운 반유대주의적 요소"와 "인종차별적이고 반유대주의적인 암시가 담긴 흔한 헛소리"라고 불렀습니다.[11][234] 2018년 8월 유대인 전신 통신사 기사는 "QAnon의 전형적인 요소 중 일부(비밀 엘리트, 납치된 아이 등)는 역사적이고 현재 진행 중인 반유대주의 음모론을 반영합니다."라고 주장했습니다.[235]
