2. 역사

1945년 에티오피아 제국의 마지막 황제 하일레 셀라시에 1세가 미국 트랜스월드 항공(TWA)의 도움을 받아 설립했다.[328] 1946년 4월 이집트 카이로에 첫 운항을 시작했고, 1958년 프랑크푸르트로 장거리 운항을 시작했다.[328] 1963년 케냐 나이로비에 취항했으며, 1998년 대서양 횡단 항로를 개설했다.[328]

1965년 에티오피아 정부가 100% 출자하는 회사로 변경되었고, 1971년부터 모든 운항을 에티오피아인이 수행하고 있다. 2007년 3월 기준 종업원은 4,700명이며, 아프리카를 대표하는 항공사 중 하나로 꼽힌다.

2. 1. 초기 (1940년대 ~ 1950년대)

2. 2. 제트 시대와 발전 (1960년대 ~ 1970년대)

1962년 12월, 보잉으로부터 직접 주문한 보잉 720 2대가 도착하면서 에티오피아 항공은 제트 시대로 진입했다.[36][37] 이 항공기들은 각각 ET-AAG와 ET-AAH로 등록되었으며 "블루 나일"과 "화이트 나일"로 명명되었다. 1963년 1월 15일, 나이로비 노선에 투입된 것을 시작으로 제트기 서비스가 시작되었다. 다음날, 새 제트기를 사용하여 마드리드행 신규 노선이 운항되었고, 곧 프랑크푸르트가 제트 노선망에 합류했다. 4월 1일, 보잉 720이 아디스아바바-아테네 노선에서 DC-6B를 대체했으며, 같은 달 서아프리카 노선도 제트기 운항을 시작했다. 에티오피아 항공은 아덴 항공 및 수단 항공과 카르툼-아스마라-아덴 노선에 대한 풀 계약을 체결했다. 1963년 5월 8일에는 코나크리행 신규 항공편이 개설되었다. 1962년 3월 18일부터 운항해오던 카노는 운항 노선 목록에서 제외되었다. 1963년 11월 30일, 에티오피아 항공은 아디스아바바에서 시험 비행 중 DC-3(ET-AAT) 1대를 잃었고, 승무원 3명이 경미한 부상을 입었다. 로마는 1964년 6월 5일에 주 1회 운항을 시작했으며, 알리탈리아와의 풀 계약에 따라 카르툼 또는 아테네를 경유했다.

에티오피아 항공은 여러 항공사와 코드셰어 협정을 맺고 있다. 스타얼라이언스 회원사인 TAP 포르투갈 항공, 남아프리카 항공, 루프트한자, 브뤼셀 항공, 스칸디나비아 항공, 싱가포르 항공, 아시아나항공, 에어 인디아, 오스트리아 항공, 유나이티드 항공, 이집트 항공, 전일본공수, 중국국제항공, 터키항공과 코드셰어를 운영하고 있다.[325]

또한, 스카이팀 회원사인 사우디아 항공을 비롯하여, ASKY 항공, LAM 모잠비크 항공, 르완다 항공, 오만 항공, 쿠웨이트 항공 등과도 코드셰어 협정을 맺고 있다.[325]

에티오피아 항공 보잉 787-8


에티오피아 항공은 아프리카 항공사 중 최초로 보잉 787 드림라이너와 보잉 777-200LR을 주문하고 운항했다.[283][226][191] 2016년에는 에어버스 A350 항공기를 운항하기 시작한 최초의 아프리카 항공사가 되었다.[152]

2023년 두바이 에어쇼에서 에티오피아 항공은 보잉 737 MAX 20대, 787-9 11대, 에어버스 A350 11대를 주문했다.[153] 2024년에는 777-9 여객기 8대 구매 계약을 발표하며 아프리카에서 해당 기종의 첫 번째 고객이 되었다.[154]

에티오피아 항공의 보잉 항공기 고객 코드는 60이다.

2012년 8월 14일, 에티오피아 항공은 전일본공수, 일본항공에 이어 세 번째로 보잉 787 드림라이너를 인도받았다. 2013년 4월 27일에는 보잉 787 배터리 문제로 인한 전 세계적인 운항 중단 이후 세계 최초로 상업 운항을 재개했다. 그러나 운항 재개 첫 번째 항공편(ET-AOP)은 2013년 7월 12일 런던 히스로 공항에서 화재가 발생하여 기체 상부가 손상되기도 했다.

에티오피아 항공의 첫 보잉 787 드림라이너 항공기(ET-AOQ)는 2012년 8월 14일에 인도받았다. 이는 전일본공수, 일본항공에 이어 세 번째로 보잉 787을 도입한 것이며, 배터리 문제로 인한 전 세계적인 운항 중단 이후 2013년 4월 27일에 세계 최초로 상업 운항을 재개한 항공사이다. 그러나 운항 재개 첫 번째 편에 사용된 'ET-AOP'는 2013년 7월 12일 런던 히스로 공항에서 화재가 발생하여 기체 상부가 손상되기도 했다.

5. 서비스

5. 1. 좌석 등급

에티오피아 항공은 대부분의 항공편에서 클라우드 나인(Cloud Nine)과 이코노미 클래스, 두 가지 좌석 등급을 제공한다.[155][156] 다만, 전 좌석이 이코노미 클래스로 구성된 대시 8 항공편에서는 클라우드 나인 좌석이 제공되지 않는다.[242]

에티오피아 항공의 비즈니스 클래스인 클라우드 나인 승객에게는 기내 편의 시설과 다양한 독서 자료가 제공된다.[158] 보잉 777-200LR 기종에서는 슬리퍼 시트와 주문형 오디오 및 비디오 서비스가 제공되며, 15.4인치 기내 엔터테인먼트(IFE) 스크린에서 85개 채널을 이용할 수 있다.[281]

5. 4. 라운지

에티오피아 항공 승객은 볼레 국제공항에서 두 개의 라운지를 이용할 수 있다. 클라우드 나인(Cloud Nine) 승객은 클라우드 나인 라운지에서 항공편 출발을 기다릴 수 있으며, 이곳에서 다양한 편의 시설, 개인용 컴퓨터 또는 무선 인터넷을 이용할 수 있다. 마찬가지로 골드 또는 실버 등급의 셰바마일스(ShebaMiles) 카드 소지자는 셰바 마일스 라운지 시설을 이용할 수 있다. 고객 서비스 상담원이 두 라운지 모두에 배치되어 있어 승객의 항공편 관련 문의 사항을 지원한다.[279]

클라우드 나인 라운지는 아디스아바바 출발 클라우드 나인 이용객 전용 라운지이다. 단, 아디스아바바 출발의 환승편이 이코노미 클래스인 경우에는 이용할 수 없다. 각종 음료 및 음식, 편의 시설, 컴퓨터, 텔레비전, 무선 연결을 이용할 수 있다. 또한 각 항공편의 출발 시각을 고객 서비스가 직접 안내한다.

쉬바 마일 실버 라운지는 실버 회원 카드를 소지한 쉬바 마일 회원이 이용할 수 있다. 각종 경식, 컴퓨터, 텔레비전을 이용할 수 있다.

6. 사건 및 사고



항공 안전 네트워크의 기록에 따르면, 1965년 이후 에티오피아 항공에는 61건의 사고와 사건이 발생했으며, 이전 이름인 에티오피아 항공(Ethiopian Air Lines)에 대해 6건이 더 발생했다. 현재까지 이 사건으로 494명이 사망했다.[159]

7. 논란

에티오피아 항공은 티그라이 전쟁과 관련하여 티그라이족 출신 직원을 차별했다는 의혹과 전쟁 중 군사 활동에 연루되었다는 의혹, 그리고 야생 동물 운송과 관련된 논란에 휩싸인 바 있다.

7. 1. 소수 민족 차별 의혹

2020년 11월과 12월, 에티오피아 항공은 소수 민족인 티그라이족 출신 직원을 티그라이 전쟁과 관련하여 해고하거나 무급 휴직을 시켰다는 혐의를 받았다.[162] 에티오피아 항공은 이러한 혐의를 부인하며, 어떠한 직원도 "인종적 배경 때문에 해고되거나 정직된 적이 없다"고 밝혔다.[163] 2020년 12월 ''뉴욕 타임스'' 기사에 따르면, 티그라이 출신인 에티오피아 항공의 최고 경영자 테월데 게브레마리암도 티그라이 전쟁 발발 이후 에티오피아를 떠나는 것이 금지되었다고 보도했다.[164] 테월데는 2021년 10월 국제 행사에서 모습을 보였고 인터뷰를 진행했다.[165][166]

7. 2. 군사 활동 연루 의혹

CNN의 조사에 따르면 에티오피아 항공 소속 화물 항공기가 티그라이 전쟁 중 에리트레아 공항으로 무기를 수송했다는 의혹이 제기되었다. 에티오피아 항공은 2020년 11월에 에티오피아 국방부에 최소 6번의 청구서를 보낸 것으로 알려졌다. 기사 작성 기자는 민간 항공기를 사용하여 군사 무기를 "밀수"하는 것은 국제 항공법 위반이라고 주장했다.[167] 그러나 CNN 항공 분석가 메리 시아보는 후속 인터뷰에서 상업 항공사가 전쟁 시기에 정부에 화물 서비스를 제공하는 것은 국제법 위반이 아니라고 설명했다.[168] 에티오피아 항공은 전쟁을 위한 무기 수송 의혹을 부인하며 수송된 물품은 "식품 및 보충제"라고 밝혔다.[169][170] 2021년 10월 7일, 에티오피아 항공 페이스북 페이지에 삭제된 게시물에서 CEO의 말을 인용하여 항공사가 "반역적인" 직원에 대한 조사를 시작했으며, 항공사는 "정부의 요구를 계속 이행할 것"이라고 언급했다.[171] 이후 에티오피아 항공은 해당 페이스북 계정이 일시적으로 해킹되었으며 게시된 진술은 가짜라고 밝혔다.[172]

7. 3. 야생 동물 운송 논란

2021년, 세계동물보호협회 보고서는 에티오피아 항공이 박쥐와 영장류 등 '높은 생물 보안 우려' 종을 포함한 살아있는 야생 동물을 전 세계로 수출하는 데 관여했다는 혐의를 제기했다. 소수의 항공사만이 이러한 혐의를 받았다. NGO는 특히 에티오피아 항공이 국제 항공 운송 협회(IATA)의 생동물 규정을 준수하지 않고 운영하고 있다는 우려를 제기했다.[177]

2024년, PETA는 에티오피아 항공의 동물 학대 혐의에 대한 캠페인을 시작했다. 7월, 아디스아바바에 있는 에티오피아 항공 본사 밖에서 시위를 계획한 후 PETA 대표 2명과 11세 소년이 에티오피아 당국에 의해 24시간 넘게 구금되었다.[178] 그 직후, 메스핀 타세우 에티오피아 항공 CEO는 자사가 원숭이, 양, 염소, 물고기, 소, 황소와 같은 살아있는 동물을 국제 항공법과 규정을 완벽하게 준수하여 운송해 왔다고 밝혔다. 그는 "지불이 이루어지고 합법적인 법인에 의해 운송되는 한 우리는 살아있는 동물을 운송합니다."라고 덧붙였다.[179]
